T3 – Teaching to Teach with Technology
KA3 Multilateral ProjectOrazio Miglino
University of Naples “Federico II”
Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies, National Research Council, Rome
Project Goal:
Produce a course (and courseware) to introduce Teachers, Vocational Trainers, Professors into (new) Learning Technologies
Two years ago:
We started from a pragmatic definition of new Learning Technologies:
Overcome E-learning platforms. Not only Videogames (or Serious Games)
The new Learning Technologies are: Computer Simulations, Robots, Augmented Reality Systems and Videogames
The new Learning Technologies permit to have experiences:
For example:
- scientific experiments in Virtual Laboratories- practices in Soft Skills (negotiation, mediation, decision making) acquisition- exploration of digital worlds
The GACET11 (tomorrow) Show-case session will present some products and prototypes
After the two years:
the partership has produced a standard methodology to “Teach to Teaching with Technology” reported in an Handbook (written in Spanish, English ant Italian) and a (long) video tutorial

The Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) is the result of a fusion of various institutions such as: the former Institute of Psychology, the former Institute of Phonetics and Dialectology in Padova and some groups from Biomedical Technologies in Rome, LADSEB in Padova and the Solid State Electronics group in Rome.
Our research group belongs to a Network of Excellence, that brings together researchers of a broad range of theoretical and technological disciplines, psychologists, philosophers, biologists, engineers, computer scientists, physicists and mathematicians.
Our Lab focus is to reproduce psychobiological phenomena in artificial systems using Evolutionary Robotics and Artificial Life techniques. Moreover, the group is involved in extending this approach to create effective new technologies that support psychological processes (Learning, Decision Making, Entertainment, Soft Skills, etc.).
Moreover there is a strong link with NAC Lab, which is a sort of spin off of ISTC, based in Naples, with similar research fields.

MAJOR PROJECTS
T3 AT A GLANCE
The strategic goal of T3 is to develop and validate an innovative teaching program to promote the use of advanced learning technology by: (i) university teaching staff; (ii) secondary school teachers; (ii) trainers involved in VET.
The final output of the project is a set of freely available tools, designed to encourage the use of new learning technologies. These include a book (available in printed and in downloadable format) describing practical applications of the new technology, free software, and a web site providing access to required technologies and technical support and a set of paper and electronic learning materials.
The project, which lasted for 24 months, is organized in 10 Work Packages:
• Coordination (WP1)• Needs Analysis (WP2)• Selection of technologies (WP3)• Methodology and Learning Program
(WP4)• Technologies and infrastructure: testing
set up and management (WP5)• Trials (WP6)
• Production of a book and CD/DVD "Teaching with Technology" (WP7)
• Quality Plan (WP8)• Dissemination (WP9) • Exploitation and Sustainability (WP10)

T3 GANTT
WP6TRIALS
STEPS:
Recruitment: The first stage of the process involved contacts with organizations (university departments, schools, companies) employing potential learners). Following the agreement of the organization, recruiters set direct contact with individuals interested in participation. Recruitment began at an early stage.
Planning and preparation: This task involved detailed planning of the intervention and the familiarization of staff with project technologies. On each site, a train the trainer programme involved staff responsible for the “Technology kit” and it was done online.
Teaching program: To facilitate participation by learners, teaching venues and schedules were organized flexibly to match the needs of participants. On average, each participant participated in the program for a total of 6 working days over a period of 6 months (1 academic year). Classroom teaching and workshops were interspersed with project in which learners try out new technologies with their own classes, where possible.
Trial report: This step provided a report describing the organization and results of the trial.
WP7TEACH WITH TECHNOLOGY
STEPS:
Planning, preparation and editing of manuscript: this step included the planning, preparation and editing of the English version of the manuscript
Preparation of Spanish and Italian editions: it set the translation and editing of the Spanish and Italian editions of the book
Preparation of CD/DVD: it supervised the assembly of materials to be included in the CD/DVD accompanying the book
Production: it coordinated the professional production of the book (3 language editions) and CD/DVD.
