Dear Friends and Parishioners,

As I begin my fifth year with the families at Ascension, I can’t help but to appreciate how we’ve grown, not only in numbers, but in strength. Ours is a strong, vibrant program, where families are engaged, children are nurtured in the faith, and our volunteers are sincerely valued. Our teachers are encouraged to continually deepen their knowledge of the catechism, our parents are encouraged to share in prayer and activities, and our children are encouraged to grow in community and faith.

This academic year, beginning in September, we will be offering Saturday afternoon classes, along with the Sunday morning and weekday after-school classes. Registration forms are available in the rectory, or you can email me and I will send you the forms. We are offering a $50 discount on registration fees if you register by September 1. Saturday classes will begin September 9, Sunday classes September 10, Tuesday classes begin September 12 and Wednesday classes begin September 13. Please register early and let me know when you wish for your children) to attend. We have scholarships and payment plans to help with the cost of tuition. I am in the office Monday through Thursday through August; please let me know if you wish to meet .

We offer sacramental preparation for Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation, as well as enrichment classes for the grades in-between. We are a continuous program; children are offered classes from age 3 until Confirmation at age 13/14. Parents are encouraged to keep their children in the program every year, straight through. We employ the Catechist of the Good Shepherd for children ages 3 to 6, it is a fabulous introduction to the church and a proven way for young children to develop an individual relationship with Christ. We have a great team of special education teachers who work one-on-one with those children in need; and we have Spanish language options available to all students.

Last year we launched the “Spirit Squad”, our teen youth group program. Our mission is to build community, strengthen our faith, engage in community service activities, and have fun! Last year we volunteered at the Thanksgiving Mercy Dinner, organized the food pantry, cooked, served, and cleaned up at the homeless shelter, and marched in the Martin Luther King walk to bring awareness to the need for affordable housing. We ran hat and scarf drives for the homeless, contributed to the coin drive for the medical mission to the Dominican Republic, and contributed to our church and our community by serving in other capacities. We also went ice skating, had a basketball/BBQ night, a game night, a movie night, went bowling, went to Dave and Buster’s, and ended our year with a fabulous trip to Rye Play land. The Spirit Squad meets the second Saturday of the month, although there are many community service opportunities between meetings. We usually begin with a prayer and gospel lesson before the 5:00 mass, which we all attend together. The only requirement to join the Spirit Squad is that a teen must be Confirmed, and have a desire to help and have fun; there is no registration fee. The first meeting will be September 9, Saturday. We will meet in the school gym at 4:00 p.m. I hope to see your teen there!

The Ascension Religious Education program is always looking for volunteers; for the classroom, as hall monitors, in the office, and doing ‘one-offs’: food for celebrations, costumes and set design for shows, etc. If you would like to help, please let me know. We are also appreciative of monetary donations toward our scholarship fund, to assist families who cannot afford the tuition for the program. Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión, A medida que comienzo mi quinto año con las familias de la Ascensión, no puedo evitar apreciar cuánto hemos crecido, no solo en número, sino también en fuerza. El nuestro es un programa fuerte y vibrante, en el que las familias están involucradas, los niños son nutridos con la fe y nuestros voluntarios son sinceramente valorados. A nuestros maestros se les alienta para que continuamente profundicen su conocimiento del catecismo, a nuestros padres de familia se les animan a compartir en oración y actividades y a nuestros niños se les alienta a crecer en la comunidad y en la fe. Este año académico, comenzando en septiembre, estaremos ofreciendo clases los sábados por la tarde, junto con las clases del domingo por la mañana y las clases semanales después de la escuela. Los formularios de matrícula están disponibles en la rectoría o pueden enviarme un correo electrónico y yo les mandaré los formularios. Estamos ofreciendo un descuento de $50 del precio de la matrícula si se inscriben para el 1ro de septiembre. Las clases de los sábados comienzan el 9 de septiembre, las clases de los domingos comienzan el 10 de septiembre, las clases de los martes comienzan el 12 de septiembre y las clases de los miércoles comienzan el 13 de septiembre. Por favor, inscríbase temprano y déjeme saber cuándo desea que sus niños asistan. Tenemos becas escolares y planes de pago para ayudar con el costo de la matrícula. Estaré en la oficina de lunes a jueves todo el mes de agosto; por favor, déjeme saber si se quiere reunir conmigo. Ofrecemos preparación sacramental para el bautismo, la primera comunión y la confirmación, al igual que clases de enriquecimiento para los niños que están en los grados intermedios. Somos un programa continuo, a los niños se les ofrecen clases desde los 3 años hasta la confirmación a la edad de 13 ó 14 años. A los padres de familia se les alienta a que mantengan sus niños en el programa todos los años, hasta el final. Usamos el Catecismo del Buen Pastor para niños de 3 a 6 años; es una fabulosa introducción a la iglesia y una manera probada para que niños pequeños desarrollen una relación individual con Cristo. Tenemos un gran equipo de maestros de educación especial que trabajan de uno a uno con aquellos niños con necesidades especiales; y hay opciones de idioma español disponibles para todos los estudiantes. El año pasado inauguramos el “Equipo del Espíritu”, nuestro programa de grupo de adolescentes. ¡Nuestra misión es construir comunidades, fortalecer nuestra fe, involucrarnos en actividades de servicio a la comunidad y a gozar! El año pasado servimos de voluntarios en la Cena de Caridad del Día de Acción de Gracias, organizamos la despensa de comida, cocinamos, servimos y limpiamos en el albergue para desamparados y marchamos en la caminata de Martin Luther King para lograr consciencia de la necesidad de viviendas a precios asequibles. Hicimos campañas para recaudar gorros y bufandas para los desamparados, contribuimos para la campaña de recaudación de monedas para la misión a la República Dominicana y contribuimos a nuestra iglesia y comunidad sirviendo en otras capacidades. También fuimos a patinar sobre hielo, tuvimos una noche de parrillada después de un juego de baloncesto, una noche de juegos, una noche para ver películas, fuimos a jugar boliche, fuimos a Dave y Buster y acabamos nuestro año con un fabuloso viaje a Rye Playland. El “Equipo del Espíritu” se reúne el segundo sábado del mes, aunque hay muchas oportunidades de servicio comunitario entre reuniones. Usualmente comenzamos con una oración y una lección del evangelio antes de la misa de las 5 de la tarde, a la que todos asistimos juntos. El único requisito para hacerse miembro del “Equipo del Espíritu” es que el adolescente esté confirmado y tenga el deseo de ayudar y de divertirse; no hay cuota de inscripción. La primera reunión será el sábado, 9 de septiembre. Nos reuniremos en el gimnasio de la escuela a las 4 de la tarde. ¡Espero ver a su adolescente allí! El programa de Educación Religiosa de la Ascensión siempre está en busca de voluntarios, para los salones de clases, como controladores de pasillos, en la oficina y haciendo algunos trabajos únicos: comida para celebraciones, disfraces y diseños de escenario para las presentaciones o espectáculos, etc. Si le gustaría ayudar, por favor, déjeme saberlo. También apreciamos donaciones monetarias para nuestro fondo de becas, para ayudar a familias que no pueden pagar la matrícula del programa. (ACI). This is the 10th year

the ACI is accept-

ing applications for the summer/fall program.

If you’re interested in cooking, experiencing new

foods and culture, learning cooking techniques

and having fun while being safe, this is

the summer program for you.

Class starts Tuesday, July 25 and will be held

once every Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. In

the fall we will move to Thursdays.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompanying adults

in their preparation for the

reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interactive

discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are considering becoming a Catholic

or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion

and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. Sacraments can be received at the Easter Vigil.

RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, beginning September 12th, 2017 in the Church rectory.

The RCIA also welcomes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and

El programa de Iniciacion Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) es un grupo que se reune para compartir la fe
