Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Today we celebrate Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday we, of course, celebrate

Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem in order to accomplish his Paschal

Mystery. Palm Sunday also begins Holy Week.

The liturgical year is broken up into six seasons, the shortest of which is the

Season of the Easter Triduum. The Season of the Easter Triduum begins on

Thursday with the evening Mass of the Last Supper. The Season is three days in

length. It reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil. On these days we celebrate

the Last Supper, the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. These days are the

culmination of the entire liturgical year.

This Thursday is Holy Thursday. On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the Last

Supper of Jesus. It was at the Last Supper when Jesus instituted the sacraments

of the Eucharist and Holy Orders. It was also at the Last Supper that Jesus

washed the feet of his disciples, in order to give to them an example of unselfish

service. On Holy Thursday only one Mass is permitted, the Evening Mass of the

Last Supper. On Thursday night, we will have one Bilingual Mass at 7:30p.m.

with the Washing of the Feet. After Mass, the church will remain open for

private adoration until midnight.

On Good Friday, no Masses are celebrated. On Friday, we celebrate the Passion,

and Death of Jesus. The celebration consists of the readings (including the

singing/reading of the Passion), veneration of the cross, and Holy Communion.

We will have a celebration in English at 3:00p.m. Then at 5:00p.m., we will have

the same celebration in Spanish. After the Spanish celebration, we will have a

procession through the streets – recalling the Lord’s journey to Calvary.

Again, on Holy Saturday, no Masses are celebrated except for the evening Easter

Vigil. During the day, the church waits in vigil for the resurrection of Jesus. At

this Vigil, we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The Easter Vigil

is the proper time for adults to receive the Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism,

Eucharist, and Confirmation. The Easter water and the Paschal candle are

blessed. We will celebrate the Bilingual Easter Vigil at 8:00p.m. Remember, the

events which we celebrate during Holy Week really should be understood as one

event. To that end, I encourage all to try and be part of each of these beautiful

and meaningful celebrations.

I would like to invite you also to be present for the celebration of Solemn

Morning Prayer on Friday, and Saturday at 9:30a.m. These will be bilingual and

there will, of course, be music. I pray that this is a holy week for each and for

all.

In keeping with our "We Can Do it Together" Campaign, we are once again

asking that each wage earner consider making a monetary Easter gift of $250 -

$500 if you are able to provide one, but any extra donation is greatly

appreciated.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that tomorrow, March 26th, has been designated

by the Archdiocese of New York as well as the Diocese of Brooklyn and Rockville

Center as Reconciliation Monday. Tomorrow, confessions will be heard from

3:00 until 7:00p.m.

PASTOR’S LETTER NOTAS DEL PASTOR

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Hoy celebramos el Domingo de Ramos. En el Domingo de Ramos, naturalmente, celebramos la entrada triunfal de Cristo a Jerusalén para cumplir con su misterio pascual. El Domingo de Ramos también inicia la Semana Santa.

El año litúrgico está dividido en seis temporadas, la más corta de todas siendo la temporada del Triduo Pascual. La temporada del Triduo Pascual comienza el jueves con la misa por la noche de la última cena. La temporada dura tres días. Llega a su punto culminante en la vigilia pascual. En estos días celebramos la última cena, la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Estos días son la culminación del año litúrgico entero.

Este jueves es jueves santo. El jueves santo celebramos la última cena de Jesús. Fue en la última cena cuando Jesús instituyó el sacramento de la Eucaristía y las sagradas órdenes. También fue en la última cena cuando Jesús lavó los pies de sus discípulos para darles un ejemplo de servicio desinteresado. El jueves santo solo es permitida una misa, la misa por la noche de la última cena. El jueves por la noche tendremos una misa bilingüe a las 7 con el lavatorio de los pies. Después de la misa, la iglesia permanecerá abierta para adoración privada hasta la medianoche.

El Viernes Santo no se celebra misa. El viernes celebramos la pasión y muerte de Jesús. La celebración consiste en las lecturas (incluyendo la lectura/canto de la pasión), veneración de la cruz y la Santa Comunión. Tendremos una celebración en inglés a las 3 de la tarde. Después a las 5, tendremos la misma celebración en español. Después de la celebración en español, tendremos una procesión en las calles – recordando el camino del Señor al Calvario.

Otra vez, el Sábado de Gloria no se celebra misa salvo la vigilia pascual por la noche. Durante el día, la iglesia espera en vigilia por la resurrección de Jesús. En esta vigilia celebramos la resurrección de la muerte de Jesús. La vigilia pascual es el tiempo apropiado para que adultos reciban los sacramentos de iniciación, el bautismo, la Eucaristía y la confirmación. Se bendicen el agua pascual y el cirio pascual. Celebraremos la vigilia pascual bilingüe a las 8 de la noche. Recuerde, los eventos que celebramos durante la Semana Santa en realidad deben ser comprendidos como un solo evento. Con este fin, animo a todos a que traten de ser parte de cada una de estas bellas y significativas celebraciones.

Me gustaría invitarlos para que también estén presentes para la celebración solemne de oración matutina el viernes y sábado a las 9 de la mañana. Éstas serán bilingües y, por supuesto, habrá música. Pido a Dios que ésta sea una semana santa para cada uno y para todos.

De acuerdo con nuestra campaña de “Juntos Podemos Hacerlo” le pedimos a cada persona asalariada que considere hacer una donación de Pascua a la Parroquia de la Ascensión este año de $250 - $500, si puede proveer uno, pero cualquier donación adicional será grandemente agradecida.

Finalmente, les quiero recordar que mañana, 26 de marzo, ha sido designado por la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, al igual que las diócesis de Brooklyn y Rockville Center, como lunes de reconciliación. Ese día habrá oportunidad de confesarse desde las 3 de la tarde hasta las 7 de la noche.

Mission to the Dominican Republic

This summer our parish will be returning to The Dominican Republic for the sixth year of Mission. The mission will take place from Sunday, July 1stuntil Sunday, July 8th. The pur-

pose of the mission is two-fold; the Mission is both spiritual and medical. Here are some ways you can help our Mission

to D.R. and other people in the world who are in need.

If you are participating in the “Mission Coin Cans Bank” to donate loose change to our Parish Mission in the Dominican Republic (We are starting to collect all Coin Cans if they are

already full. The due date to return all cans is June 17th.

A Carbon Fast is a way to make sacrifices that will bless and deepen our relationship with God, our neighbor, and God's creation through caring for the earth. A Carbon Fast invites us to reduce our consumption of the fossil fuels that cause harmful global warming, and so protect people (and animals and ecosystems- optional) from more intense storms, drought, and pollution worldwide as well as here in our city. Ways to participate in a Carbon Fast could include eat-ing less meat, recycling carefully, buying local, seasonal food which doesn't have to be flown long distances using fossil fuel, purchasing renewable energy through your utility bill, avoid driving when possible, and turning off appliances and surge protectors when not in use. Dear Friends of the Lord:

On good Friday, a special collection is taken up in all parishes throughout the Catholic world to help support the church in the Holy Land.

Sometimes, it is identified as a collection to support the “holy places.” In actuality, through the good works of the Francis-can Custody of the Holy Land and the Holy father’s Congregation for Eastern Churches, support is given not only to the holy sites of our faith, but also to every aspect in the life of the Church in that beleaguered part of the world.

For example, the contributions of the Good Friday Collection help to sustain Catholic primary and secondary schools in the Holy Land, the Catholic University if Bethlehem, and a whole network of clinics and healthcare facilities in the Holy Land. Even special projects for social development are assisted by the collection.

Right now, the Christians of the Holy Land are a small minority. They very much need our help, especially in these difficult days. Please be generous as you can be to this year’s Good Friday Collection.

El Viernes Santo, una colecta especial se ha programado en todas las parroquias del mundo católico para ayudar y el apoya a la iglesia en Tierra Santa.

A veces, se identifica como una colecta para apoyar los "lugares santos". En realidad, a través de las buenas obras de la Cus-todia franciscana de Tierra Santa y la Congregación del Santo Padre para las Iglesias orientales, el apoyo no se da solo a los lugares santos de nuestra fe, sino también a todos los aspectos de la vida de la Iglesia en esa parte del mundo asediada.

Por ejemplo, las contribuciones de la Colecta del Viernes Santo ayudan a sostener las escuelas primarias y secundarias católicas en Tierra Santa, la Universidad Católica de Belén y todas las redas de clínicas y centros de salud en Tierra Santa. Incluso proyectos especiales para el desarrollo social son asistidos por la colecta

En este momento, los Cristianos de Tierra Santa son una pequeña minoría. Ellos necesitan nuestra ayuda, especialmente en estos días difíciles. Por favor en esta ano generosos como pueden para la Colecta de Viernes Santo.

Volunteer Reception / Recepción de Voluntarios We will celebrate all of our volunteers, from all of our groups and activities, with a special reception on Sunday April 8, 2018 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm in the Rectory Dining Room.
