National President Tom Karnes' "Living Exchange – Investigating the Possibilities" video can now be found on the homepage of the website and Exchange's YouTube channel. We encourage you to watch, and share, this overview of the 2014-2015 campaign and the great things planned for the year! EXCHANGE IS WORKING FOR SAFER FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Domestic violence is also called Intimate Partner Violence and is part of the spectrum of family violence. As you consider this continuum of abuse in families, it is easy to assume a connection with child abuse and neglect. And, this would be an accurate assumption. Many forms of violence can also all take place under one roof or in a given community or neighborhood and can happen at the same time or at different stages of life. Children who live with domestic violence face increased risks: the risk of exposure to traumatic events, the risk of neglect, the risk of being directly abused, and the risk of losing one or both of their parents. All of these may lead to negative outcomes for children and may affect their well-being, safety, and stability. Important points for us to consider are:

A majority of studies reveal there are adult and child victims in 30 to 60 percent of families

experiencing domestic violence.

1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their

lifetime.

Children living in families with domestic violence experience child abuse and neglect at nearly 4 times

the rate of families not sharing this experience.

Children who experience physical abuse or neglect early in their lives are at greater risk for committing

violence against peers (particularly for boys), bullying, teen dating violence, and committing child

abuse, elder abuse, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence later in life.

These various forms of violence are interconnected and often share the same root causes. Let’s continue to work through our Exchange Clubs and Exchange Club CAP Centers to strengthen and build safer families and communities. Contact: [email protected]. IN SYMPATHY Captain William C. DISPLAY YOUR BANNER PATCHES WITH PRIDE Here are some suggestions for arranging hard earned patches in an orderly fashion on club banners: On the National Service Award banner, begin at the left of the banner, placing the chevron patch (year patch) here. As a club receives the program patches, place them in a line beginning at the chevron patch. When a club conducts more than one project in a particular program, a star patch is sent. These stars may be placed around the appropriate patch. For example, most clubs honor at least six Youth of the Month winners. After placing the Youth of the Month patch on the banner, begin placing the stars around the patch. This will represent the number of youths honored by the club throughout the year. If the club is a Big “E” winner, the “E” patch is to be placed on your Service Award banner – not on the Big “E” banner. The chevron (year patch) is to be placed on the Big “E” banner. A suggested way to display the chevrons on the Big “E” banner is to begin at the left of the banner, level with the “E” on the banner. Each time the club earns this prestigious award, place the chevron patch next to the previous one going from left to right. Be sure to display these banners at your club meetings and programs/projects. The banners are a wonderful public relations tool. Through proper display of the award banners, members demonstrate their pride in what they have done to help make their community a better place, and the public will see what Exchange has been doing for them! Contact: [email protected]. DATABASE – MEMBER AREA Attention Exchange Leaders … Please take a moment to login to the Member Area to verify that all of your personal information is accurate. Your national staff pulls this information whenever necessary, so it is important that it remains up to date. Contact: [email protected]. FILING REQUIREMENT – 990 FORM Filing Deadline is November 15th Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Exchange Clubs and Districts

Why is becoming a Berkey Fellow important?

“My primary reason for becoming a Berkey Fellow is to build our Endowment so that the interest on that money will ensure that our Programs of Service and our Child Abuse Prevention Project will be funded in the future. Secondly, Kay and I enjoy attending the Berkey Dinner with our Exchange friends at the National Convention.”

Past NEC and NECF President

Jim Brown

What is the Berkey Fellowship? Named in honor of Charles Berkey, the founder of Exchange, the Berkey Fellowship honors outstanding supporters of the ideals of the National Exchange Club. Individuals or clubs can join this elite group of Berkey Fellows with a contribution of $1,000 or more to the National Exchange Club Foundation during the fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Monthly payments are available.

How is Berkey Fellowship money used? Gifts made to the Berkey Fellowship become part of the Endowment Fund - a permanent bank of funds for the NEC Foundation. The Endowment Fund’s principal is permanently invested, and interest earnings from the fund are used to support the programs of Exchange. The Endowment ensures that Exchange’s programs are sustained well into the future.

How can I become a Berkey Fellow? To make your Berkey Fellowship donation easily, electronically, please visit www.exchangeclubfoundation.org/donations.htm and note “Berkey” in the memo area.
