Why a Systems Approach?Products become multifunctional

• A phone years ago…

• A phone today• Music, photos, video, GPS, Internet…• 2G, 3G, 4G, WIFI, Bluetooth, NFC…• Touch screen, battery, USB, HDMI…

… eventually you can still make a call with it !

An ever increasing number oftechnologies and standards are involved

Why a Systems Approach?Complexity of Technologies

• Multiplicity and convergence of technologies

• Large-scale infrastructures

• Need for inter-operability

• Many new and emerging markets

Why a Systems Approach?A new level of collaboration

• Traditional TC to TC bilateral liaisons have reached their limits in such cases

• Need for a larger collaboration platform

• Need to outreach other standardization organizations

Some useful terms and expression

• System – a purposeful structure that consists of interrelated and interdependent elements each of which can affect its behaviour or property and that together produce results not obtainable by the elements alone.

• Systems thinking – a way of understanding complex situations by looking at them as combinations of systems

• Systems science – a collection of disciplines that have created useful knowledge by applying systems thinking and the scientific method to different aspects of the system domains

• Systems approach – a way of tackling real-world problems which uses the tools of system science to enable systems to be engineered and used.

Systems Engineering, the Dawn• Architecture and Military Engineering during Roman

Empire– Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, De Architectura– Julius Caesar, de Bello Gallico (Book IV), …on the

construction of a wooden bridge on Rhine river…

Battle of Thapsus in 46 BC in Caesar's African campaign.

Recognition for the role of the man in the “system”

Vitruvian Man (Leonardo da Vinci)

The Rise of Systems Engineering • After 2nd WW, in the US a large effort in the development of

Systems Engineering processes and methodologies

– DoD, Rand Corp., NASA, Space Industry…

• INCOSE and ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2015

Systems and software engineering -System life cycle processes

Systems Approach in Future ChallengesSystems Approach is central when aiming at improved system capabilities and quality of life• The awareness of the criticality of the human element in complex systems• The growth of software functionality in systems

Ambitious projects!• Smart services • Smart hospitals• Smart energy grids• Smart cities

Systems of Systems (SoSs).Systems Approach helps to address risks deriving from relying on:• immature technologies • combinations of technologies with incompatible objectives/ assumptions.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach

Systems Engineering is increasingly needed but increasingly challenged in the quest to make future systems scalable, stable, adaptable, and humane.

The Systems Approach at IEC:A collaboration platform

• Top-down approach starting at the system rather than at the product level

• To address the complexity

The Systems Approach at IEC:A collaboration platform

• Engaging TCs, and not directing

• Complementary to existing TCs, and not competing

the IEC Systems Approach

–Systems Evaluation Groups (SEG)

–Systems Committees (SyC)

–Systems Resources Group (SRG)

Systems Evaluation Group (SEG)

• Evaluates if the “Systems” approach is relevant for the problem to be addressed

• A larger, open group used in the first stage of systems development

• Engages the community of experts and identifies the relevant stakeholders

• Defines the general architecture and boundaries of the problem to be addressed

• Reports to SMB (2 years approx. lifetime)

Systems Committee (SyC)

• An SyC can publish international standards, as well as other IEC deliverables

• It functions generally in the same manner as a conventional TC ( except extended liaisons to reach out to other SDOs)

• It operates at the “same level as a TC”

• The Secretariat is with the IEC Central Office(increased neutrality towards TCs and NCs)

SyCs establishedSyC Smart Cities:

– Electrotechnical aspects of Smart Cities

SyC Smart Energy:– Standardization in the field of Smart Energy

– Coordination and guidance in the areas of Smart Grid

– Including interaction in the areas of Heat and Gas

SyC AAL Active Assisted Living:– Enable accessibility of AAL Systems and user interfaces

– Enable cross-vendor interoperability of AAL systems, products and components

SyC LVDC:– Low Voltage Direct Current and Low Voltage Direct Current for

ADVANTAGES• Efficient and quicker information turn-around• Platform for readers to respond and share best

practices using blog and feedback tools.• Confluence is a tool already used by the IEC tool

internally and was a quick deployment for SRG.• Allows IEC to explore another means of content

sharing (besides PDF/Word documents circulation)

ABOUT THE WIKI SITE

The SRG Resource site is intended to provide IEC Systems Work stakeholders general information about SRG, Systems Approach guidelines, access to tips/tools, shared best practices, and other information to assist committees working on complex systems.
