An Introduction into System ChangeDr Anna Birney, Forum for the Future
An introduction to systems changeDr Anna Birney - EVPN March 2020
How does the world work?
The world is a complex, interconnected finite, ecological-social-psychological-economic system. We treat it as if it were not, as it were divisible, separable simple and infinite. Our persistent, intractable, global problems arise directly from this mismatch
Meadows, 2010
Accelerating the big shiftto a sustainable future
www.forumforthefuture.org
The world is changing. Fast.
The next decade will be critical as we work to address the global challenges that are combining to fundamentally re-shape our economic and social landscapes.
High levels of disruption are now a given as we respond to the effects of climate change, new ways of working, future proofing supply chains, or how we will feed a growing population on shrinking global resources.
This kind of change presents high levels of risk, but also significant opportunity for organisations ready to create a positive future, both for themselves and by actively working with others to reshape the systems they rely upon.

Why a School of System Change?
In the face of complex challenges there arenot enough people operating with thecapacity to shift systems.
In this global emerging area of practice, people need to learn from one another’sexperience so they aren’t starting fromscratch.
Growing a global community of changeagents is our best chance to accelerate atransition to a sustainable future.
Purpose
A systems change approach can:- Enable the development a better analysis of the challenge – [systems
diagnosis] Support strategic decisions making
- by better understanding where the leverage to intervene is in the systems and challenge of choice and how to understand impact
- As well as supporting the design and approach to the interventions one might take [including partnership, participatory and funding approaches]
Systems Change Capabilities
What does the breakthrough of rock’n’roll tell us about how change
happens?
How does change happen?‘A transition is a radical, structural change of a societal (sub)system that is the result
of a co-evolution of economic, cultural, technological, ecological and institutional developments at different scale-levels.’
(Rotmans et al, 2001).
1. It challenges the myth of the hero
2. It didn’t emerge overnight
3. It was the result of a broader societal, political, technological change process
What can we learn from this story?
1. It challenges the myth of the hero. It came about as a coalescing of socio-cultural events and trends , as well as repeated waves of technical innovation.
2. It didn’t emerge overnight, but through the repeated reconfiguration of different systems.
3. It was embedded in a broader change process.Social and technical developments in the 1930s and 1940s helped set the stage for the music revolution of the 1950s.
4. It continued to evolve. After its breakthrough in the 50s, rock continued to change and mature, undergoing further changes and mutations, developing new subgenres and influencing others.

Change happens at different scales and altitudes
Systems change –is the emergence of a new pattern of organisation or system structure
Process – by which we continually create change systemically
Outcome – the shift of the structure or pattern that you want to see
- Patterns of flows and structures- Patterns of relationships and ways of
organisation incl. power- Patterns of interventions towards a (new)
whole system goal- Pattern of thinking & being – mind-sets &
paradigms

Areas for innovation
How is systems change practice relevant for philanthropy and impact investment? What is your influence and role in the system of change?
Addressing complex challenges – having the ability to look at the bigger picture
Long-term sustainable impact – changing what we value and therefore what we measure and evaluate
Shifting power structures – using your power to change the power that is at theroot of many problems
Helps convene the ecosystem – through shared purpose and can buildmomentum and energy for change
What we offer at SchoolWe are equipping people with the capabilities to lead system change initiatives addressing complex sustainability challenges.
The School will offer flexible access to the best learning experiences, tools, case studies from the field of system change.
We grow a global community of practiceby connecting existing networks of change agents who want to shift whole systems.

Definition of a system
“Any group of interacting, interrelating or interdependent parts that form a complex unified
whole with a specific purpose”
Function: Purpose - Structure: Elements and Interconnections
The boundary question
“There are no separate sys tems . The world is a continuum. Where to draw a boundary around the sys tem depends on the purpose of the discuss ion”Donella Meadows

Key challenges
49
Why? • Work on necessary transitions to achieve the changes we seek• Work on real solutions, not just relief or clean-up
What? • Combination of boots on the ground and systems perspective • Integrated approach: combining promising pathways to change
How? • Theory of Change as our starting point• Focus on collaboration between funders and grantees

Key challenges• How to get from single pilots to creating snowball effects?
• How to avoid lock-ins in the current system?
• How to direct (government) funding to the real transformative options?
OVER TO YOU: Q&A, thoughts and feedback
So what do you think? What does this mean to you?
