The 5th Taiwan-Korea-Japan Symposium on Microbial Ecology was held at National Central University, Jhongli, Taiwan. There were about 200 participants with 37 from Japan and 33 from Korea. We also had 2 participants from China, 1 from Hong Kong and 1 from USA. In the conference, two plenary talks were delivered by Prof. SM Liu (TSME President) and Prof. Joe Zhou (USA). And a total of 19 oral presentations were from the four symposia and 2 from woman microbiologist round table. The four symposia were Marine Microbial Diversity & Ecosystem; Microbial Biodegradation with Ecological Perspective; Approaches to Microbial Ecological Theory; Microbes v.s. the Environment (Young scientist symposium). In addition to the oral presentation, there were a total of 95 posters with 26 from Japan, 24 from Korea and 1 from China. Eight best poster awards were selected by the Poster Award Committee composed of three Societies plus prof. Joe Zhou.
For the events associated with the conference, the young scientist party remained a success with a good number of participants (16 from Taiwan and Japan plus 2 from Korea and 1 from China). The student party concluded with the establishment of a Facebook group “Young Scientist Meeting and Party on Microbial Ecology,” which facilitate communications between the young scientists. It will be managed by the student representatives from three countries. Particularly, with the initiation by Dr. Mio Takeuchi, we held a round table discussion chaired by President SM Liu and had about 20 participants sharing woman scientist situation in the three countries. In addition, the promotion of 6th Korea-Japan-Taiwan symposium and ISME 15 were also included and introduced by President SJ Kim (MSK) and Prof. CJ Cha. For the welcome reception on Oct. 31st, the symposium speakers/conveners, organizing committee members, board members of three societies and local sponsors, a total of 40 guests were invited for the dinner. There were 52 participants joining Eco-tour in Yangmingshan National Park on Nov. 2nd.
The business meeting of TSME, MSK and JSME was being held on Nov. 1st and concluded with a continuous mutual collaboration among the three societies. The one-day 6th K-J-T symposium will be held before ISME15 in 2014. The three societies actively promote ISME 15 in Asia countries and particularly in China.
