What Do Y’all Do?
Communicating the Impact of the Stax Music Academy
+What does SMA do for kids?
Think/Pair/Share Think: silently consider the prompt. Pair: turn to the person beside you and talk about it. Share: tell the class what you talked about.
(Step one is SILENT…so no talking until the teacher calls “Pair!”)
+What do we intend to do?
From the website:“Stax Music Academy exists to nurture and present the next great generation of Soul Communicators.”
http://www.staxmusicacademy.org/about-us/our-mission/
+What do the kids say we do?
Unseal the paper and read Jada’s testimony.
Highlight what she says she learns at SMA.
Essential question: What key areas of curriculum are alluded to in Jada’s testimony?
+
SMA teaches students how to be accomplished, idiomatic musicians and self-actualized citizens. We do that.
YOU do that.
+Who need’s to know what we do?
Soulsville campus – TSCS, SMASM, Foundation
Shelby County Schools
Our students
Our students families
Music educators from around the world
Memphis’s top donors
Who else?
+How will they know?
What are methods for communicating what we do with our stakeholders?
It is our responsibility, as entrepreneurial educators, to communicate our curricula – both overt and hidden – to our stakeholders.
+Where do you find the curricula?
Overt: The written curricula; the materials listed in the syllabus; designated content that students should learn from participating in this education.
Hidden: The implicit curricula; the understandings from which the overt curricula are decided; content gathered by the learning environment itself.
The syllabus is a site for overt and hidden curriculum.
What we write matters.
If it matters, we need to write it.
