Exodus: The Gospel before the GospelExodus: The Gospel before the GospelExodus: The Gospel before the GospelExodus: The Gospel before the Gospel By The Rev. Dr. Cal LaneBy The Rev. Dr. Cal LaneBy The Rev. Dr. Cal LaneBy The Rev. Dr. Cal Lane

We use the word “Gospel” a lot in the church – but

what does that word really mean? There are actually

quite a few threads that come together in that word in

a rather majestic way. First, the actual word is an old

English word, god-spell, meaning “good news.” That

is how the word in the Greek New Testament,

“evangelion” has been translated. But there is more

to this word; it doesn’t simply mean welcome

information. In the first century, when the New

Testament was written, the word “evangelion” was

used by the brutal emperors of Rome as the title for

their public proclamations. And remember, those

Caesars claimed to be kings and gods. So when

Mark, for example, begins his story with the phrase

“here begins the “evangelion” (gospel, good news) of

Jesus” he is signaling that Jesus is true king and true

    God – and not Caesar.

But there is more still to the word “Gospel.” It is not

simply that Jesus is the true king and true God (as

important as that is). Gospel also points out what that

true King and true God does! The true King and true

God rescues his people from slavery, from bondage,

from the heavy chains of sin and death that separate

them from the fullness of life as it was in God’s good

creation. And to be completely clear, this is a

situation they cannot escape. God’s people cannot

save themselves, so God came into this world

himself, bled and died to rescue his people, to show

mercy to those captive to sin and death, destroy those

powers that burden his people, and bring them to

    himself.

So what does that have to do with the book of

Exodus? First, the persistent theme in Exodus of

“acknowledgement.” This word in Exodus doesn’t

simply mean, do you know a fact or bit of

information, but rather do you “recognize” or

“acknowledge” authority. Over and over again,

Pharaoh – who claims to be king and god just like the

Caesars would later – refuses to recognize the God of

Israel. And God in turn refuses to recognize the

authority of Pharaoh, his magicians, or the gods of

Egypt. As the story plays out, God demonstrates for

everyone (Israel included!) who has real authority.

So in the first instance, Exodus is a proclamation of

who is true king and true God. This is a gospel

    proclamation, an evangelion.

Secondly, what does the true king and true God do?

He rescues his people from bondage, from slavery,

from a pitiful, dark captivity. He breaks the

constraints that hold them in Egypt, and to be clear

this is a situation the people Israel cannot escape on

their own. They are not strong enough, wise enough,

crafty enough. No. They need God to hear their

cries and come down to save. They cry out for his

mercy and God, who keeps his promises, rescues

them from their dire straights. But there is more still!

God destroys the wicked powers: Pharaoh and his

    war horses are drowned!

Can you see how central the story of Exodus is for

Christians? Can you see this story as the Gospel

    before the Gospel?

Did You Know…Did You Know…Did You Know…Did You Know… by Deacon William Sangrey …St. George’s will be holding a Pastoral Care Ministry Fair during Coffee Hour on March 26

in the Undercroft? This event will highlight the some of the ways that the members of the

parish provide emotional and spiritual support for one and other. Pastoral care is a vital

component of a healthy parish life. Pastoral care is one of the ways St. George’s takes care

of itself. And it is not a ministry limited to the clergy, on the contrary, it is all inclusive.

Through our Baptismal Covenant, each of us is called to

“seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as

[ourselves].” We can live out this promise by becoming

involved in of the ministries that will be highlighted at the

Fair. Each pastoral ministry group provides an opportunity

to be a comforting presence to those in need through

prayers and actions. These ministries enrich the entire

    community.

What is Parish Health Ministries? Did you ever wonder who is responsible for the prayer

shawls that are blessed at a worship service? Or perhaps you are interested in finding out

more about the dedicated people who pray with us in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on

Sundays? Who are Eucharistic Visitors and what do you need to do to have one visit you or

a friend who is laid up and unable to attend services? Where do the altar flowers go after

services? Who provides the food at funerals to support the bereaved? What if I just need

someone to talk to when times are tough? The answers to these questions, and many

more, can be found in the various ministries of pastoral care.

Pastoral Care is a two-way street. If you are looking for support, come find out what is

available; if you have a desire to give of yourself, come and get involved. You are invited to

join us at this gathering as we lift up the talents and blessings of those in our parish family

who Love and Serve the Lord through the Pastoral Care Ministries.

Family MinistriesFamily MinistriesFamily MinistriesFamily Ministries Confirmation Preparation for Youth and Adults has begun! Kick-Off & Info Session at 2nd Sunday Potluck Supper, March 12, 6 p.m.

If you would like to be confirmed this fall, please speak with a member of the clergy about our new confirmation program, register, and get a workbook. We’re approaching confirmation in an innovative way this year – instead of a class, confirmands (both youth and adults) accomplish a sight-seeing and volunteering list which gives them a deeper awareness of how this parish actually works. In short, there are no house elves! This is a self-paced program for both youth and adults which simply needs to be completed by November – but folks really should start now. The bishop will be here on November 19 for confirmation so we are leaving registration for confirmation open through May.

July 10-14 (online registration opens in May)
