Starting your own business this year?

There are tentative signs that we may be gradually pulling out of recession. The good andsurprising news is that we are seeing a number of people starting their own business across the

region. There is some evidence to suggest that the recession has been the final catalyst for some totake the plunge and finally go it alone. Good luck to everybody who is doing that – there can befewer finer things in life than being able to control your own destiny!

The good news for anybody who is starting up is that it is generally fairly straightforward. One ofyour early considerations will be your business structure: Whether to start as a sole trader, apartnership or to set up a Limited Company. There are advantages and disadvantages to all of these,but forward planning and an understanding of the tax rules may enable you to plan in advance howto minimise your tax liabilities. Starting your business as a sole trader and changing your legalstructure to a Limited Company once you have developed your business can bring some significanttax benefits, for example.

The costs involved in setting up as a sole trader or partnership are negligible, and the costs involvedin setting up a Limited Company are relatively small. We would always advise you to take professionaladvice before setting up a company however, as it is quite easy to end up paying for two sets ofaccounts in your first year, rather than just one!
