1954 was the year Wendelin Richter started ahumble business called, Richter’s Office Appli-ance at 416 Locust Street in Sterling. This smallbusiness venture of selling and repairing type-writers and small office equipment was thefoundation of the SBM you see today. 60 plusyears later, SBM Business Equipment Centerhas grown into a large enterprise located justdown the street from its original location to501 Locust Street. As sons and daughters, Herb Richter and Wen-dy Richter Johnson, have always been involvedin some aspect of the business. The SchmittPlumbing-Heating Family

Schmitt Plumbing andHeating Inc. began inOct 1967. A young man,29 years old, working foranother plumber at thetime, decided to start uphis own business. That iswhen Richard Schmitt andhis wife Alice decided tobuy Bill Witzleb’s plumbingbusiness from him, at thetime located on Hennepin

Avenue in Dixon. One year later, Richard and Alice built out on Route 2,the current location of the business. Some told Richard he wasn’t going tomake a go of it, but 47 years later his business is still serving the Sauk Valleyarea. Richard still owns the business but is retired. Richard’s son, Mark, and his wife Debbie, have been handling the day to day operations of thebusiness for the past few years.

Whether it be new install or repair work, Schmitt Plumbing offersa wide variety of services: installation of water heaters, faucets, toilets, softeners, etc. rodding out drains (sink, floor or main lines), sewer and waterservice repairs, septics and drainfields. 33 Years o Business!

12420 W. Penn Road, Polo, IL•www.burkardtslpgas.com•815-946-3081W P R d P l IL

On March 16, 1982, Bill and Beverly Burkardt foundedBurkardt’s LP Gas to serve the Ogle county/Polo area.As a local, family-owned business, our priority hasalways been to provide the kind of propane servicewe would want for our own family. When we startedBurkardt’s LP Gas, we were a one-truck operationwith just two employees, Bill and Bev. During the first6 months of being in their own business, Bev alsoworked at Hazelhurst Elevator as a bookkeeper dur-ing the day. Bill and Bev raised four daughters, Pam,Patti, Paula and Penny. In 1985, Paula’s then-boyfriend,Mike Faivre began working at Burkardt’s LP Gas. Mikeand Paula were married in 1988 and after having three

children, Paula began working in the family businessin 1997. Over three decades later, the Burkardt’s LP Gasfamily has grown to include 21 employees, 12 bulk de-livery trucks and more than 6500 residential, agricul-tural and commercial customers in eight counties. Ourfirst year in business we delivered 750,000 gallons ofpropane. Last year, deliveries had grown to more than8.7 million gallons. And, although we’ve grown, ourfocus hasn’t changed from providing friendly, reliablepropane service.

At 77 years old now, Bill has retired from the propanebusiness, but takes care of business at Edgewood GolfClub, which Bill and Bev have owned for more than 7years. Bev is the purchasing agent for all the propanesold and delivered by Burkardt’s, most often workingseven days a week. 2015 finds Mike recognizing his30th year at Burkardt’s LP Gas as the General Man-ager. Mike is also the President of the Illinois PropaneEducation and Research Council. Paula is the CreditManager and handles Accounts Payable.

Burkardt’s LP Gas is a retail propane gas marketerserving a 45 mile radius of Polo. We deliver propanefor residential, agricultural, and commercial uses. Ourfleet of 12 bulk delivery trucks allows us to be respon-sive to our customer’s needs.

To continue to improve our service over the years,Burkardt’s LP Gas has three satellite plants in Oregon,Leaf River and Sublette with additional storage ofmore than a quarter of a million gallons. This addi-tional storage ensures you will always have a securesupply of propane. It helps keep propane prices stableby allowing us to purchase propane in large quantitiesand store it. Increased storage capacity also reducestransportation costs — all savings that we can passalong to you.

In addition to providing a secure supply of propane ata stable price, Burkardt’s LP Gas takes its commitmentto safety and service very seriously. All of our servicetechnicians participate in the Certified EmployeeTraining Program sponsored by the National PropaneGas Association. This valuable safety training helpsensure your gas system is installed correctly for yoursafety, and that it operates as efficiently as possible. Our service technicians continually update their safetyeducation and training.

In addition to delivering propane, Burkardt’s LP Gashas a well trained service team. We sell and installwater heaters, radiant heaters, wall and hanging heat-ers, fireplaces, etc. Our friendly and knowledgeableemployees can handle all your propane-related needs. We love visiting with customers and providing you thesame level of service we want for our own family.

At Burkardt’s LP Gas, we feel it is important to giveback to the community that has given us so much.Burkardt’s does this by supporting local churches, schools, fire departments, little leagues, nursinghomes, and many other non-profit organizations.

In June 2014, Burkardt’s LP Gas added a new PINKdelivery truck to our fleet. The PINK truck was de-signed to honor cancer awareness. Burkardt’s LP Gaswill be donating one cent for each gallon of propanedelivered by our beautiful, PINK truck to local cancerresearch.

Burkardt’s LP Gas has been recognized as the MostEfficient Propane Retailer in the nation and is alsocurrently listed as the 35th largest Propane Retailerin the nation.

Family Stone Memorials

Pictured L-R: Kylon, Gaston, Bradon and Nolan

Growing up in an artistic household, it didn’t

take long for Gaston Gragert and his brothers

Bradon, Kylon and Nolan to develop skills that

would be used later in life.

Learning to draw, paint, carve and design

from their father John Gragert at an early age

helped them to have an “eye” for art and de-

sign.

While observing various monuments in a

local cemetery, Gaston noticed that many had

the same artwork and wondered why. “Every-

one should have their own personalized me-

morial representing who that person was,” he

thought, “and not have artwork that is ‘mass

produced’ out of a clip art book.”

So, with encouragement from aunts, un-

cles and a few funeral home directors, Gaston

opened Family Stone Memorials. Specializing

in customization, each memorial is one of a

kind and personalized with input from each

family.

With Gaston heading up the marketing and

sales, his father John along with his brothers

Kylon and Nolan hand engraving one of a kind

scenery, his brother Bradon managing cus-

tom fabrication and design, and his mother

Becky handling the bookkeeping, Family Stone

Memorials is helping families to get through

a very difficult time by helping them remem-

ber their loved ones in very special ways. The

Gragert Family reminds everyone to “Choose

Family” when deciding on a memorial.
