Main aims:

I was told that I would be collected from the airport by a chauffeur – driven limousine

However, this is what happened…

The city was named by the first Welsh immigrants who arrived on board the Mimosa on 28 July 1865.

Today it is one of Argentina's fastest growing cities and a very popular g g ytourist destination.

Puerto Madryn is where the headquarters of the FundaciónPatagonia Natural, whom I formed links with, is based.

The F.P.N. is a Non Governmental Organisation, formed by scientists in 1989.

Its main purpose is to ensure a better quality oflife for the people who live in Patagonia today and for future generations.

FPN's programs include education on wildlife awareness and environmental protection using a hands-on teaching approach to schoolchildren, businesses and governments alike.

To look at the good educational practice that the Fundación carries out in promoting awareness of environmental issues.

To record ways in which Information Technology is being used as a tool for conservation work.

To build links between Cardiff and Vale College, and the Fundación.

I visited three wildlife reserves during my visit:

• La Esperanza

• Punta Tombo

• Punta Flecha

• Desertification

• Oil Pollution

• Overfishing

• DesertificationQuestion:Do you know what these are?

Sheep’s Hoove

= Hard.

This is bad for the delicate plant roots of the region.

Squid.

Guanaco’s Toes

= Soft.

Ideally adapted for the delicate plants of the region.

• Oil Pollution

Question:How many litres of oil were spilt in the sea in 2010?

A: 4 034 625A: 4,034,625B: 4,034,625,000C: 40,346,250

• Overfishing

Question:What do these have in common?

A: They all are being overfished. One of them is on the critically

Hake.Argentine Angelshark.

Squid.

endangered list

“Desertification is caused by variations in climate and human activities in dry lands”

One example of this was the introduction of an alien species from Europe: “sheep”

The delicate plants and their roots –responsible for capturingThe delicate plants and their roots –responsible for capturing water – are crushed by 1.000.000’s of sheep, trampling on their roots and killing the plants, and degrading the soil.

It is 82 Km North of Puerto Madryn, this reserve was once a sheep farm.

Jointly run by the Fundación and the World Land Trust.

Staff and volunteers run this reserve, activities include monitoring key species like the Guanaco and puma (left)

Largest breeding colony of MagellanicPenguins in the area.

Permanently visited by tourists, students and scientists from all over the world.

Scientific data has been collected about Penguins from this reserve over a period of 30 years.

This data provides us with information regarding the health of the oceans

Weighbridges used to scan individuals and determine the weight of the penguins as they cross the device.

GPS tagging of selected (male) penguins, taped to their back and used to track the penguin when it swims to feed.

Bottom Trawling can plough huge grooves in the seabed, some of these scars can be 4 Km long.

This is a serious problem in the coast of Patagonia

The oil companies were shown the GPS data from the oil covered penguins.

As a result they moved the oil tanker lanes further out to seatanker lanes further out to sea.

Argentine fishing vessels now by law have to use GPS tracking and stick to pre-set routes to ensure sustainable fishing
