Welcome Index
The 2010 Fifa World cup Soccer is in full swing. Starting with a brilliant
opening game and continuing to produce climatic games, we as South
Africans can sit back and admire the spectacle that is the World Cup Finals.
All reports indicate that this will end up been a great success.
The question to ask is, do sporting events mean anything for the property
market? According to analysts, a positive impact is likely to occur in the
medium term. The big drive by the government to improve the country's
roads, public facilities, transport networks and airports for the World Cup
should contribute toward higher property values in surrounding areas.
So it would seem that the World Cup not only unites our country but may
lead to an increase in the property market.

THE SUSAN DEACON PROPERTY GROUP
OK so Bafana Bafana's match against Uruguay did not deliver what we were all hoping
for let’s focus on the occasion and the importance of a successful campaign for South
Africa… even if we don’t go through to the next round that hosting the World Cup is
one of the biggest victories in our democracy’s history.
Although the loss was disappointing, the Uruguayans on their victory and urged South
Africans not lose perspective of what has been achieved by ‘a passionate nation’ in
only six years.
Let’s not debate whether it was a penalty or otherwise, whether or not we would have
conceded a second goal, and then an inevitable third once reduced to ten men with a
penalty sprinkled into the mix.
Let us also not lament our team of young men, all carrying an enormous amount of
pressure. After all this is soccer! Perhaps the biggest shock was Spain, arguably the
best side in the world over the last few years, losing to Switzerland earlier in the day.
Uruguay were ranked 16th in the world coming into this World Cup. We were ranked
82nd. They have looked the part and frankly deserved the win. Let’s celebrate what the
World Cup means for all of us, such as the focus over the last six years in assembling
infrastructure and job creation, and an opportunity to showcase arguably one of the
world’s most fascinating countries to millions of people, who will now know where we
are and the many wonderful offerings available for all visitors to our country.
South Africa has hosted more global sporting events than any other country since 1994
and none bigger than this. What has pleased me no end, is how the whole nation has
rallied behind Bafana Bafana with tremendous unity and passion. I want to encourage
everyone to continue with great commitment and enthusiasm to support the World Cup
and Bafana Bafana in particular. Let’s celebrate and focus on the occasion, and the
importance of a successful campaign for South Africa, even if we as a country don’t go
through to the next round. South Africa has the reputation of a gregarious, warm and
friendly nation and that that this should be our focus for the remainder of the
tournament.
Maintain the magic of the Rainbow Nation and continue to host everyone – locals and
visitors alike – in the friendly, accommodating, vibey atmosphere that constitutes and
defines our amazing country.

THE WORLD CUP SA'S GREAT LEAP FORWARD
An extraordinary thing happened recently in the iconic
chamber of London's cavernous Royal Albert Hall.
With 21 days to go before South Africa hosts the 2010
Fifa World Cup, eight South African stand-up comedians
representing a kaleidoscope of the country's racial
diversity kept an overwhelmingly South African audience
of more than 3 000 doubled up with laughter for three
side-splitting hours.
The show - called Bafunny Bafunny, a word-play on the
national football team Bafana Bafana ("the boys" –
was an irreverent attempt to build national enthusiasm
for the world's largest sporting event among South
Africa's largest expatriate community – sometimes
referred to as the 10th province of South Africa.
It was catharsis of the kind that has been kindled – and
could be fast-forwarded – by the national convergence
and unity of purpose thrust on South Africans by hosting
the world's largest and most diverse sporting event.

PROPERTY SALES AND RENTALS STILL RISING
The real estate market showed further signs of recovery
with an uptick in property sales last month and rentals
this month.
Absa's house price index shows the average nominal
value of small, medium and large houses rose 15.2%
year on year last month. This resulted in an average
house price of about R1.08-million in the middle
segment after 14% growth in April.
Continued strong growth in the average value of smaller
and more affordable housing is believed to be related to
affordability issues.
After a marked improvement in the affordability of
housing over the past two years on the back of house
price and interest rate trends, housing affordability
appeared to have turned around in late 2009.

WILL SPORT EVENTS IMPROVE THE MARKET
With several major international sporting events
scheduled in South Africa, London and Brazil over the
next few years, the property market is definitely heating
up.
Past international sporting events have proved that being
a host city brings investment in public infrastructure,
urban regeneration, a significant social impact and an
increase in property values.
On average, the previous Olympic host cities of Athens,
Sydney, Atlanta and Barcelona all outperformed their
national markets, with 19% higher property prices in the
five years leading up to the games.
Similarly, before and after the 2002 World Cup in Paris,
property prices increased by as much as 55% over a
one-year period before and after the tournament, with
properties near the stadiums rocketing by more than
100% in value.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup has and is going to have a
dramatic impact on the country.

LOCAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES FINANCIAL
SOUND
South Africa’s top construction companies remained
financially sound, but Africa-focused ratings agency
Global Credit Ratings (GCR) on Monday warned that
there were some uncertainties facing the local industry.
GCR pointed out that while construction industries had
reported strong operating results and net cash positions
throughout most of 2009, this was largely due to
contracts that had already been under way.
“The evidence of the downturn in the industry was only
apparent in the declining order books, which is forward
looking, and suggests uncertainty of adequate
opportunities to sustain revenue growth, even at
moderate levels,” said GCR corporate sector head Eyal
Shevel.
Shevel further pointed out that the construction sector
was “highly reliant” on government’s R850-billion
infrastructure development spend coming to fruition.

THE BOKS ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD
Witbank – Nick Mallett says the manner in which the
Springboks ripped France apart last week came as a
shock to the Northern Hemisphere.
“I don’t think rugby people in South Africa even realise
how good that performance (at Newlands) was. To beat
an accomplished French team, that won the Six Nations,
like that, was incredible. There is no doubt that South
Africa are the best team in the world,” said the former
Springbok coach at the Italian team hotel on Monday.
He also does not view it as a slap in the face that the
Boks are resting some key personnel.
“There is so much depth in South African rugby that it
probably does not even matter who they play. It’s going
to be another formidable team.”
Mallett also beams with pride when he talks about new
Bok sensation Gio Aplon.

NEW 6% HOME LOAN SCHEME SURFACES
A Cape-based scheme is asking its clients to believe in
financial miracles by offering them home loans fixed at
6% for the life of the loan.
Most sensible people would be suspicious of such an
offer, particularly if they are asked to put money in before
they receive any. However, the scheme has apparently
succeeded in luring a handful of clients, who are now
waiting for their loans to be paid out.
Regular readers will remember the demise of Rudco, a
company that scammed many with a similar promise of
6% home loans. Its whiskey-sipping boss Rudi Visagie
is sitting behind bars in Pollsmoor Prison where he
awaits trial. His recent bail application was denied by the
court.
There is no apparent link between Rudco and the latest
scheme, which trades under the names Quickvest, PKA
Financial Services and Arctogen Investments.

“There is so much depth in South African rugby that it
probably does not even matter who they play. It’s going
to be another formidable team.”
Mallett also beams with pride when he talks about new

NEW 6% HOME LOAN SCHEME SURFACES
A Cape-based scheme is asking its clients to believe in
financial miracles by offering them home loans fixed at

South Africa registered a record 265 million page views
in a single day on Tuesday, football's world governing
body Fifa said on Wednesday.
The page views on www.FIFA.com were accessed by
nearly 10 million users.
The match between five-time World Cup winners Brazil
and North Korea on Tuesday helped boost traffic to the
site, which is partly supplied by Agence France-Presse.
