YoUR HEALtHsubstances / Getting help / driver impairment & policeRainbow Serpent strongly advises you not to bring any illegal substances to the festival site. With a number of incredibly sad tragedies over the last few years the risk is just not worth it. Victoria Police will be conducting operations within the surrounding area targeting impaired driving and searching for illicit substances. If you are caught in possession of, or caught selling illegal substances, the consequences can be life changing.
Getting help at rainbow 2019Medical Tent is located in the Entertainment Area near the main entrance the South Campground (opposite the hammocks, near the toilets behind the main stage dancefloor). They are open 24 hours a day throughout the festival. The service is free and confidential. If you need help or you see someone else that does, please don’t hesitate to come and see our friendly, amazing medics straight away!
DanceWize utilises a peer education model to reduce alcohol and other drug related harm at Victorian music festivals and can be found next to the Medical Tent. If you are feeling anxious, uncomfortable or just need a quiet relaxation place to chill out and get your head back together, DanceWize is the place to go. They are also on-hand to provide unbiased information about the effects drugs and alcohol.
The Nest is located alongside the Medical Tent and aims to provide social support and friendship to people experiencing issues on site related to gender-based violence (GBV). Open 24 hrs, The Nest will work in unity with the current harm reduction, safety and medical services on site.
Helper Huts – there are five Helper Huts situated throughout the campgrounds and are where the Rainbow Rangers are based. your friendly campground helpers are there to assist you in any way possible. Be sure to know where your closest Helper Hut is when you set up camp. If you ever need help in the campground, the Helper Huts are the place to go!
The use of any of these services is confidential and you will never get in trouble for seeking help.
fatigue & drivingWith so much to fit into the festival weekend you may not get as much sleep as usual, or perhaps you had a lot of work the week before and some late nights. This can lead to fatigue - extreme tiredness brought about by not enough rest over a period of time whether from mental or physical exertion or illness.
Fatigue is a major cause of crashes in Victoria, resulting in some 50 deaths and approximately 300 serious injuries each year. If you think you might be too tired to drive, then don’t! Consider car-pooling or take public transport to the festival.
www.tac.vic.gov.au/road-safety/safe-driving/tips-and-tools/fighting-fatigue
don’t drive To or from the festival with drugs in your systemWe support the efforts of Victoria Police in their work to keep impaired drivers off our roads. Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol is dangerous and puts lives at risk and there is no excuse for this reckless behaviour.
In Victoria roadside drug testing does not test for impairment. You may feel completely fine to drive and still fail the test.
DO NOT DRIVE if you feel you could be impaired or have detectable drugs in your system!
Get Tested Before you leave the festivalPatrons in doubt about their ability to drive can register with the Info Tent to leave their car on site (at own risk) and catch a shuttle bus to Beaufort or Ballarat to connect with public transport back to Melbourne.
Patrons can return later in the week to pick up their vehicle.
Drug tests are $22, or $11 if you present your car pass (good for one use only), at the following times and locations:
Sunday: BMF Stall - 0900 to 2000 Front Gate - 0900 to 1900Monday: BMF Stall - 0800 through to Tuesday 1500 Front Gate - 0800 to 2000Tuesday: Front Gate only - 0630 to 1500
We want all of our beautiful patrons to be safe. So please please please do not take unnecessary risks. Treat your body with respect and look out for each other.
For further information please visit the BMF Stall or the Info Tent.
unsafe vehiclesDriving an unsafe vehicle is a serious hazard which contributes to numerous accidents on our roads. We realise that you are keen to pull the old Kombi out of the retirement for the weekend, or perhaps you haven’t had the time or money to keep your everyday car regularly serviced, but is it really worth it? This is a holiday long weekend, so there will be additional police patrolling the roads throughout Victoria and they will be targeting unroadworthy vehicles. Get your vehicle checked by a mechanic before you leave, or consider taking public transport to the festival, it’s easier than ever!
In previous years, there has also been road blocks by the Sheriff on the way to the festival chasing up unpaid fines and your car may be impounded if you are unable to pay the fines.
TrespassingRainbow operates under very strict permit capacity which we are not allowed to exceed. For this reason and out of respect for patrons who have done the right thing we have decided to take a much tougher stance against people who try to gain entry to the festival without a valid ticket or wristband. If you are caught without a valid wristband, you are trespassing which carries a maximum penalty of nearly $3,000 or 6 months imprisonment.
If you are caught with a forged wristband, you face the more serious crimes of falsification of a document, obtaining financial advantage by deception and trespass.
Every year Rainbow provides a number of different avenues to access discounted tickets or volunteer roles. We encourage people to take advantage of these opportunities.
We will work closely with an increased security presence and Victoria Police to identify and prosecute people caught trespassing. Those caught aiding trespassers will also be ejected from the festival. We are also working closely with Vicroads and abandoned vehicles left on the side of the road around the festival site will be towed.
vehicle passIn 2019, a $30 vehicle pass will need to be purchased prior to the festival. This will result in faster festival queues and allow us to fund a range of new important initiatives such as free shuttle buses and road safety strategies.
By now most of you will have purchased your vehicle pass online. If you haven’t there is still time. Every car that enters the festival will require a vehicle pass. While you can purchase them on the gate we highly recommend you get them beforehand to save time.
For further information on the vehicle pass and where the money goes visit www.rainbowserpent.net/vehicle-pass

FEStIVAL conDItIonSAs part of our arrangements to use this beautiful site there are some conditions we need you to be aware of and hope you will respect. We are very lucky to have the support of the property owners, local community and emergency services to allow this event to take place. The rules are few but, for the future of Rainbow Serpent, they must be followed.
essential rulesNO GlaSS Or EXCESSIvE alCOhOlGlass poses a severe risk not just for patrons during the event but also for the farmer and animals who call the site home all year.
NO ParkING ON INTErNal rOaDSKeep six metres clearance on all roads at all times. Emergency vehicles need access to all parts of the campgrounds. offending vehicles may be towed at owner’s expense.
NO FIrES, BBQS Or FIrEwOrkSThere is a severe and very real fire risk with potentially catastrophic consequences.
DrIvE aT walkING PaCEThis is a festival site and not a highway. Respect others already on site and only drive at walking pace to reduce danger and dust.
NO QuaD Or mINI BIkESThese dangerous and selfish toys ruin the campground atmosphere for everyone.
NO aNTI-SOCIal BEhavIOurEveryone is here for enjoyment and to escape nonsense.
NO GENEraTOrS Or SOuND SYSTEmSCampgrounds are for rest and relaxation but not for listening to sounds from generators or having another’s musical tastes forced upon you.
NO PETSEspecially dogs. No excuses unless you are blind or otherwise reliant on one.
YOu muST wEar YOur wrISTBaND aT all TImESIt is the only way we know you have gained legitimate entry. If you are caught on the grounds without a wristband you will either be charged with trespass or required to pay an admission penalty.
NO IllICIT SuBSTaNCESNo drug is safe. If you are caught in possession of, or caught selling, illegal substances the consequences can be life changing. However you will not get in trouble for seeking medical help.
Police will be conducting operations within the surrounding area.
NO ImPaIrED DrIvINGFatigue, drugs and alcohol are significant causes of accidents on our roads. So don’t drive to Rainbow, from Rainbow or ANYWHERE impaired. you’re putting peoples lives at risk as well as jeopardising the future of the festival.
There is a free Shuttle Bus between Beaufort town centre and RSF site (25min trip). See bus times and drop off / pick up locations at the Info Tent.
fire danger & evacuationVictoria is one of the most fire prone areas in the world and another scorching summer has created a very high fire risk. It is vital you follow all fire safety rules responsibly for everyone’s safety.
Absolutely no candles, campfires, BBQs or gas stoves are permitted at the event. We know most of you are responsible but this is a CFA requirement. Disregard and your entire campsite may be evicted from the festival.
BE VERy CAREFuL with your cigarette butts and ensure you dispose them properly.
If a Fire Danger Rating of Extreme or Code Red is forecast leading up to or during the event, the festival may be cancelled or postponed and the site evacuated. Such occurrences are very rare but reflect the extreme nature of the fire risk.
In the event of an emergency, the primary assembly area is at the Main Stage. If this is not suitable, the secondary evacuation points are to the south of the South Campground and to the east of the East Campground, as shown in the map. These are considered places of last resort and may be the safest places to be in the event of a bushfire, rather than attempting to leave to event area in a vehicle.
you must follow the direction of festival staff and security guards in the event of an emergency. Any directions being given will reflect instructions from the CFA, Police and emergency services who work together with our Emergency Management Team. Please do not panic and never drive a vehicle if you are impaired or have been advised not to.
forest accessDue to the extreme fire danger and other hazards, we do not encourage you to access the neighbouring forest but if you choose to do so, strict conditions apply:
• Access is prohibited on Total Fire Ban days as well as Extreme and Code Red fire danger rating days.
• Only use the gateway entrances.• No smoking or naked flames at any time.• No camping.• Always go with a friend and do not wander
beyond sight of festival grounds.• Respect the natural environment and leave it
as found.
hill accessThe granite hill provides a great view of the festival site but please do not climb past the boulders. They are dangerous and home to many snakes.
Towaway ZoneVehicles parked on the roads within the festival grounds (remember roads must be kept a minimum of six metres width) or on in Tow-Away Zone on the public roads surrounding the festival will be towed. If you think your vehicle has been towed, enquire at the Info Tent. Warning – a substantial fee may be charged to recover your vehicle.
campground & carparks• Follow festival staff instructions at all times.• Do not park on roads.• Camping is only permitted in designated
areas. If you are unsure then don’t camp there.
• Keep space between campsites (two metres min).
• Once you have set up introduce yourself to the neighbours. We predict you’ll get along famously.
safety advice• Take note of EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY
AREAS – Main Stage and beyond East Camping and South Camping areas on the festival map. In case of emergency, follow instructions of wardens.
• DRINK PLENTY OF WATER - free water is available near each toilet/shower block.
• LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER - if you think someone needs help then offer it.
• DON’T WANDER ALONE - always let your friends know where you are. Never leave the festival without letting someone know.
• Looking for a RIDE HOME - visit the message board at the Info Tent.
• BE AWARE OF HEAT & SUN - sunburn and sunstroke can really ruin your weekend.
• DO NOT DRIVE INTOXICATED OR SLEEP DEPRIVED - please note driver alcohol and drug testing is operational in Victoria and should be expected nearby after the festival.
• RESPECT ART & DÉCOR - artists put a lot of heart, soul and time into their pieces so please don’t damage or steal them.
• SHARE! - Share water, share food, share beer, share laughter and share space.
• DON’T WASTE YOUR WEEKEND – this event runs four days so remember to save energy for Monday – we certainly have!
we are here to help• FIRST AID, DANCEWIZE, the HELPER HUTS
and the roving RANGERS are here for your physical and mental safety.
• Please REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY to security, Info Tent or the campground HELPER HuTS.
• The Nest is a sanctuary of community services and information. Read the Rainbow Serpent 10 Pillars of Festival Safety or your Souvenir Program for more information.
Time To Go homeEveryone must VACATE THE FESTIVAL SITE By MIDDAy TuESDAy. These are the landowner’s wishes and part of the council permit conditions. Do not drive if you are intoxicated or fatigued. There are drug and alcohol testing facilities at the front gate where you may stay until 3PM on Tuesday. If you are in doubt about your ability to drive, you can leave your car in a reserved area on site and return later in the week to pick up your vehicle. Visit the Info Tent for more information.
prepare yourself1
Weather conditions can change suddenly and you need to prepare for all kinds of weather from burning uV sunrays and chilling-cold nights, to dust that gets in your eyes and aggravates asthma to rain and the mud that follows.
Like any other camping trip, please ensure you pack warm clothes (get those woollen knits out), sunscreen, sun-smart hats and breathable clothing, appropriate footwear, insect repellent, a reliable tent and adequate bedding (check the temperature range on your sleeping bag). If you have a health condition bring your prescription medication (plus extra in case it gets lost or the seal is compromised and consider wearing a medical ID tag for the festival) and bring your own First Aid Kit. Don’t forget your insulin, EpiPen, inhalers, contraception or any other important medication when you are reliant on this! Colbrow Medics will be the onsite medical provider for any incident which may occur.
In 2017 Colbrow Medics reported about 45% of their workload was related to minor cuts, grazes, insect bites and hayfever. By bringing your own First Aid
Kit and medication you will immensely assist them with this workload and, remember, it’s a large festival site, so having your own First Aid Kit nearby reduces the response time.
Rainbow Serpent Festival was proud to announce “The Nest” as a new initiative for 2017, where a range of social services are available next to Colbrow Medics such as an inclusive Safe Space for all women, trans and gender diverse people.
For people who may be intoxicated and need care, love, and support, a DanceWize stall with drug educational resources and other free health supplies and a communal outdoor shaded area. If you do decide to have alcohol or other drugs, do so consciously. Be aware of your physical wellness, how you feel emotionally, consider the impact of exiting health conditions and the medication you take and how the weather can complicate your drug experience. Make sure you are continually well-rested, fed and hydrated. Inform yourself on expected effects, safer/more pleasurable dose ranges, how to respond if there is an incident, many other risk factors and how to minimise those risks. USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS IS NEVER WITHOUT RISK.
Be respoNsiBle aNd safe2
you are in charge of your body. Know your own limits. Be gentle with yourself. Pushing your limits may result in a negative experience and can be dangerous. This part may come across a bit heavy, but we cannot stress enough how important this is: USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS IS NEVER WITHOUT RISK.
Be cautious if you choose to use alcohol or other drugs. Less = More. Be aware the highest dose is often not the most fun dose and can involve serious risks. In the current global market, drugs often contain substances other than what they are sold as with unknown effects and much higher toxicity. The same counts for ‘legal highs’, ‘research chemicals’, ‘synthetic cannabis’ and other novel psychoactive substances, as little-to-no research has been done on most novel drugs. Whenever possible, TEST youR DRuGS. Ask DanceWize in The Nest for more information.
Be especially aware and cautious if you choose to combine alcohol and/or other drugs. Some combinations have high risks. Prescription medications are drugs that can have high risks too when combined with alcohol or other drugs e.g. MDMA/’ecstasy’ does not go with certain medication like anti-depressants, among others.
NEVER COMBINE GHB WITH ALCOHOL OR OTHER DEPRESSANTS (eg. Prescription benzos are depressants, like Valium/diazepam). In the past, GHB+depressants have led to people in need of life-support being transported offsite to hospital. If you choose to use GHB, be very precise on your dose, record it and tell a trusted person what you are doing, as taking even slightly too much can easily lead to a loss of consciousness.
ALWAyS ask for medical support when someone is unconscious and roll them on their side in the recovery position. BE RESPONSIBLE, SAFE AND INFORM YOURSELF. We cannot repeat this enough: do your research, be precise in your dosage, practice self-care always and seek help immediately when necessary.

3Fluid is important to maintain a healthy body. Water intoxication (hyponatremia, linked to using MDMA) and dehydration are serious risks. you can reduce such risks this by drinking enough but not too much. Alternate water with sports drinks, coconut water, beetroot juice and tomato juice. Apply the following rules:
Up TO 1 DRiNk ( = 250ml, non-alcoholic) per hour maximum when you are chilling out.
Up TO 2 DRiNkS ( = 500ml, non-alcoholic) per hour maximum when it’s hot and/or you are active/dancing.
Alcohol does not count as fluid intake because it causes you to pee more than you drink.
eaT someThiNG every few hours
4Eating regularly is just as important as drinking fluids to keep you well and prevent water intoxication. Food contains electrolytes that are important to maintaining a healthy fluid balance in your body. It also contains many other nutrients to replenish those you have used when partying. Eat something regularly, even if you don’t feel like it. Drink soup, beetroot juice or tomato juice when eating is difficult. Drinking coconut water, sports drinks and particularly beetroot juice may delay possible water intoxication slightly but will not prevent it completely. If you feel unwell, seek help early.
cool dowN aNd chill ouT5
Don’t want to stop dancing? of course you don’t! However, cooling down is important to prevent your body from overheating.
Some drugs, like MDMA/ecstasy, make you less aware of your actual body temperature. Avoid being in the sun if you chose to take GHB. The best way to cool down is by chilling out regularly, even when you don’t feel like it. use cooling aids on pulse points + the back of your neck + groin, avoid wearing synthetic fabrics in hot weather, take a break from dancing when you are not feeling well, sprinkle yourself with water and find a nice spot in the shade.
10 PILLARS oF FEStIVAL SAFEtYDealing with weather conditions, camping, crowds of people, loud music and many other factors can sometimes be hectic and contribute to the risk of health disturbances. To increase your likelihood of having a great time at this beautiful festival and reduce the risk that you will experience a health disturbance, please follow our 10 Pillars of Festival Safety:
apply self care6
Partying at a multi-day event like Rainbow may disrupt some of the patterns you have at home. It is important to apply some self care practices to stay fit and ready to party. Sleep is so important: a mental health crisis, including hallucinations, are often caused by a lack of sleep. using stimulants like speed and ice (methamphetamine) increases these risks and may also risk displays of agitation and aggression. Sleeping during daytime might be difficult due to the heat, but even lying down calmly and undisturbed for 30 mins-2 hrs within each 24 hour period supports your health and wellbeing. Know how much sleep you need and work from there. About 7% of all cases that needed medical attention in 2017 were due to fatigue or malnutrition. Eat regular meals, sleep, maintain your personal hygiene and apply self care practice to keep you going with a positive mindset!
The medical Team is your frieNd
7AND SO iS THE NEST!
IIF YOU NEED HELP, DO NOT HESITATE! Colbrow Medics have highly trained personnel who are there to help, they will not judge you and they will not get you in trouble. Everyone on the Rainbow team, including security and police, prioritises your health, safety and wellbeing. WE ARE A COMMUNITY THAT CARES FoR EACH oTHER.
Never leave someone alone unwell. Let yourself or others be checked by medical instead of trying to ‘sleep it off’ alone.
Is someone unresponsive or unconscious? ALWAYS CALL FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE and apply the recovery position (ie. lay a person in their side) until help has arrived.
Colbrow Medics works closely with DanceWize and the rest of the services in The Nest. If you’re medically fit but in need of safety and care, you’ll get offered support from the services in The Nest. The Nest is open 24/7 during the festival. you can walk in for educational information and support relating to alcohol and other drugs, consent and (safe) sex or if you need a safe space at any time to retreat.
pracTise aNd promoTe safe sex aNd coNseNT
8Be someone who asks, listens and cares about consent. Consent is:
AcTivE - Just because a partner didn’t say “no” doesn’t mean they have given consent. Ask, because only “YES” means “YES.”
BASED ON EqUAl pOWER - If someone is underage, drunk, asleep or in another vulnerable position, they CANNOT consent.
A cHOicE - We must make sure our partners feel free to say “yes” or “no” without pressure. If we aren’t willing to take “no” for an answer, consent cannot happen.
A pROcESS - Consent requires ongoing conversations with lots of trust. Just because someone says yes to making out doesn’t mean they want to do anything else. you can change your mind at any time.
Practise safe sex! Sexual health supplies like condoms and lube are freely available in The Nest.
Don’t be a bystander! If you’re concerned about someone’s wellbeing or suspect someone is in a vulnerable situation, ask if they are oK and trust your instincts.
love your ears9
Loud music is nice as you can feel it flowing through your body. To ensure you will be able to enjoy this as long as possible in life, please use earplugs. Earplugs are freely available at DanceWize and in the Info Tent (while stocks last).
doNT drive impaired!10
NEVER DRINK OR TAKE OTHER DRUGS AND DRIVE. Never sit behind the wheel of a vehicle when under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, as your driving skills are impaired. Don’t consider driving if you are in any way fatigued or may even have traces of drugs in your bodily fluids. When leaving the festival, make sure you are well-rested, fed, hydrated, sober and have no traces of drugs in your bodily fluids (a minimum of 24, but more often closer to 72 hours is required before being fit to drive). Victoria Police will perform roadside breath and saliva tests to check for alcohol and traces of other drugs in your bodily fluids. Similar drug tests are offered on site by Blow Me First, so you can get tested before you leave site. Ask at the Info Tent or in The Nest for more information.
By attending, you are part of the rainbow Serpent community. If you see anyone unwell or in need of help, check-in with them and
be prepared to involve Colbrow medics or services in The Nest.
Please, as a rainbow Serpent community member,
RESPECT YOURSELF, RESPECT EACH OTHER AND RESPECT THE FESTIVAL'S ENVIRONMENT.
