Surah Al Waaqiah (Ayah 1 – 19)

Introduction Surah Al Waaqiah is a Makki Surah, which means it was revealed before the Hijra. This Surah was revealed to strengthen the Aqeedah. The Surahs revealed in Medina were about legislations, laws with Hikmah. There is a Hadith narrated by Ibn’ Abbas that the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) said “ Hood, Al Waaqiah, Al Mursalaat, Amma Yatsaailoon (Al Naba) and Idha Al Shamsu Kuwwirat (Al Takweer) have made my hair grey.” Al Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3297. Classed as Saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani, al-Saheehah, 955

Ayah 1& 2

”means “when إإذذاا

”means “occur ووقعت ” means “Day of Judgment ٱٱلوااقعة

Here the past tense is used indicating more authority and affirmation that this لوقعتہا

event will surely occur. When the Day of Judgment occurs no one will deny its occurrence. There is absolutely no doubt in this regard. There are two affirmations in this Ayah

1. Event will surely occur 2. No doubt about its occurrence

One of the pillars of faith is to believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment. This is HikmatAllah as on the Day of Judgment the doers of good deed will be rewarded and the sinners will be punished.

Ayah 3

”means “To Lower خافضة

اافعة ”means “To exalt رر Allah will raise and elevate some people on the Day of Judgment and some people will be lowered on that day. Who are the people who will be exalted by Allah ? The answer to the question above is in Surah Mujadilla Ayah 11. “Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do” Therefore people who believe in Allah and acquire knowledge will be exalted by Allah in Duniya and Akhirah.

Who are the people who will be lowered by Allah ? People who do not believe in Allah and do not acquire knowledge will be lowered by Allah. Honor is in Allah’s hands and Allah will honor people in Duniya and Akhirah based on one’s faith and knowledge. There is a Hadith of the Prophet that one who is arrogant due to wealth, they will be resurrected like ants, such people will be lowered.

Ayah 4

There will be a terrible shake on the Day of Judgment.

Ayah 9

ـب ٱٱلمشـٴمة means “The groups of people who will be given their book of أأصح

records in their left hand. These people will stand on the left side of Allah. How terrible is their place. These are people who commit sins and evil deeds.

Ayah 10

The third group is بقونن ـ They are the ones who are the first and foremost in . ٱٱلس

doing good deeds in life. This group is better than the ـب ٱٱلمیيمنة .أأصحFor e.g. when it is time for Prayer, one person will delay and pray while the other will immediately rush for Prayer, such a person’s heart is filled with Allah’s love. The one whose heart is filled with Allah’s love, he or she will immediately follow Allah’s command and will not delay. The more one hasten towards good deeds (meaning Saabiqun in life ) ,he will be Saabiqun in paradise.

When we are young and healthy we should hasten to do good deeds. We should not postpone doing good deeds to old age. We should not delay good deeds due to lack of time or our laziness.

Ayah 11

ٮك ـ is Ism Ishaara baeed (pointing noun to far off). It means, “Those people are أأوول

high up far”. Allah is exalting them due to their high position. Allah will make them enter paradise first and they will be near Allah in paradise. After the Prophet SAWS enters paradise then the Saabiqun will be allowed to enter in paradise and they will b closer to Allah. Their houses will be in the highest place in paradise which is firdaws al Aala ( This is the place from where water springs flow, under the Arsh of Allah. Allah mentions the exalted positions of the Saabiqun in paradise.

Ayah 12 Here Allah mentions the rewards of the Saabiqun which is Gardens of delight

ـت .ٱٱلنعیيم since the characteristics of Saabiqun is that they are the first and جن

foremost in doing good deeds therefore there will be different types of delight for their body and soul.

Ayah 13-14

Who are the بونن بقونن and ٱٱلمقر ـ They are multitudes from first generation and ? ٱٱلسfew from the later generation

The majority of بقونن ـ are from the first generation and few from the last ٱٱلسgeneration of the Prophet’s Ummah. We should make Dua to be in this group for

Akhirah. We should ask Allah for the best. We need to ask Allah to make us among them. If we ask Allah then he will make it easy for us to do good deeds.

Ayah 15

Now Allah is telling us about paradise in detail. The first thing that Allah mentions is

about the place of rest of the بقونن ـ which is on their thrones. This is their reward ٱٱلسbecause in the Duniya they had always been in a rush to do good deeds. Their thrones are of the best quality and is woven with gold, precious stones (in other verses in the Quran Allah mentions about the linings of the bed/ thrones-that it is of the best quality of silk)

Ayah 16

تكـٴیين means they are reclining on the thrones as it is the end of all worry and علیيہا مgrief. They are happy and relaxed .

بلیين ـ means they are sitting facing each other. The scholars say that this means متقthat it is so spacious, hence they face each other physically and their hearts unite. There is no envy and no jealousy in their hearts. The Prophet SAWS described people of paradise as being united as though they have one heart.

Ayah 17

”means “Going around them to serve them علیيہم یيطوفف

”means “young slave boys وولدٲنن

خلدوونن ”means “who will remain young forever م

Allah has described the beauty of the young slave boys like that of scattered pearls. Just imagine if the serving boys are so good looking then how will be the beauty of the dwellers of paradise!

Ayah 18

means cups and jugs of different types ( Plural is used) ووأأبارریيق بأكواابب

means a glass of wine. The best quality of wine which will be flowing freely.(this كأسس will be fresh and not canned or barreled) or it can also means a special drink. In other verses in the Quran Allah describes the drinks for the dwellers of Paradise. The slave boys will not overfill the glass but pour the right quantity!

Ayah 19

The wine in the Duniya is impure and it causes intoxication but in paradise everything is pure. The wine of the Paradise will not cause any headache or intoxication. Allah has forbidden drinking in Duniya. There is a Hadith of the Prophet SAWS that alcohol is forbidden and it is not allowed to sit with people who drink alcohol. For those Muslims who have not repented after consuming alcohol it is as if they have committed shirk and they will not be offered in the Akhirah. The one who drinks alcohol commits a worse sin than murder or adultery. Hazrat Omar RA said that drinking alcohol is the mother of all sins.
