Any attempt to move the motor-cycle, change its position, start it without your permission, or disconnect the battery will trig-ger the alarm. The sensitivity of the system is set in such a way that slight vibrations of the motorcycle will not trigger a false alarm.Once you have activated the alarm, any attempted theft is indicated acoustically by the siren and visually by all four turn indicators flashing at the same time, and the integrated immo-biliser suppresses engine start.

Your anti-theft alarm is com-bined with a central locking sys-tem that enables you to open and close the cases, the top-case, and the radio compart-ment by remote control. It also enables you to switch on the map-reading light and the ground lights automatically. You can customise the anti-theft alarm in certain ways to suit your needs and prefer-ences.

L Note:In order to protect the motorcy-cle’s battery and ensure that the engine can be started, the alarm system deactivates itself automatically a certain number of days after being activated, al-though it always remains active for at least 7 days.

Code card

The anti-theft alarm is supplied complete with a sealed enve-lope containing a code card 1. The number stated on the code card (remove the adhesive label) is the code for deactivat-ing the anti-theft alarm by means of the ignition (b 17).It is advisable to keep the code card with the vehicle registra-tion papers, and carry both with you when you ride the motorcy-cle.

The code number is stamped in encrypted form on the anti-theft alarm and it is also printed on an adhesive label 2 supplied with the anti-theft alarm. You should affix the label at a con-cealed location on the motorcy-cle.If you forget the code and are unable to find the code card, an authorised BMW motorcycle dealer will be able to forward the encrypted number to BMW on your behalf and obtain the correct code.

Once the immobiliser has been activated the engine will refuse to start even if an authorised key is used for the start attempt. You can tell whether the immobiliser is activated by switching on the ignition and observing LED 5; if the immobi-liser is active it will light up when the pre-ride check completes.

L Note:The remote control unit acti-vates both the immobiliser and the alarm function. It is also possible to have the immobiliser activated automati-cally when the ignition is switched off (default) without activation of the alarm function(b 26).

ActivationThe immobiliser is activated • by pressing button 1 on the

remote control unit twice (alarm function is also acti-vated)

or• by switching off the ignition, if

programmed (b 26)When you switch off the igni-tion, 50 seconds elapse before the activation phase.

Activation

Activation of the immobiliser after ignition off but without activation of the alarm function is confirmed • by the turn indicators flashing

Activation of the immobiliser with activation of the alarm function by means of the remote control unit is confirmed • by the indicators flashing

twiceand• by the alarm tone sounding

twice, if programmed (b 26)

If confirmation takes the form of the alarm tone sounding four times, this is to indicate that the anti-theft alarm's internal rechargeable battery is dis-charged. The rechargeable bat-tery of the anti-theft alarm is charged through the on-board electrical system, which means that this problem might be due to a discharged starter battery. When the anti-theft alarm's internal battery is discharged the alarm will not be triggered by an attempt to disconnect the starter battery.Contact your authorised BMW motorcycle dealer if the alarm tone sounds four times on acti-vation even after a lengthy jour-ney.

Deactivation

Deactivating the immobi-liser with the remote con-trol unit The immobiliser is deactivated • by pressing button 2 on the

remote control unit once (if the immobiliser was activated automatically beforehand when you switched off the ignition, it is reactivated 30 seconds later).

Deactivation is confirmed • by the turn indicators flashing

onceand• by the alarm tone sounding

once, if programmed (b 26)

If confirmation takes the form of the alarm tone sounding four times, this is to indicate that the voltage in the on-board elec-tricity supply has dropped below a predefined threshold. In this case, recharge the motorcycle's starter battery (b Rider's Manual).

Deactivating the immobi-liser without the remote control unitThe procedure is the same as that for deactivating the alarm function without the remote control unit (b 15).

How the alarm is triggered

How the alarm is triggeredThe alarm can by triggered• by the motion sensor• by an attempt to switch on the

ignition without deactivating the anti-theft alarm before-hand

• by disconnection of the anti-theft alarm from the motorcy-cle's battery (the anti-theft alarm's internal battery cuts in to supply power)

AlarmAn alarm lasts for 26 seconds. The alarm function is active again 12 seconds later. If the reason for the alarm persists, the alarm function is triggered again, but this can happen no more than five times in succes-sion. You can cancel an alarm at any time after it has been trig-gered by pressing button 2 on your remote control unit. This function does not change the status of the anti-theft alarm. An acoustic alarm sounds and the turn indicators flash for the duration of the alarm. You can program the sound of the acoustic alarm (b 26).

Deactivation

Deactivating the alarm function without remote control unitIf you do not have the remote control unit to hand when the anti-theft alarm is active, you can still deactivate the system. To do so, you will need the code number printed on your code card (b 6).

Deactivation is confirmed • by the turn indicators flashing

onceand• by the alarm tone sounding

once, if programmed (b 26)

L Note:The system will permit a maxi-mum of 3 successive attempts; if the third attempt in succes-sion is unsuccessful the anti-theft alarm engages for 10 min-utes. The cases remain locked when the system is deactivated without the remote control unit. In this case you will have to re-sort to the emergency unlock-ing routine (b 21).

Reasons for an alarm

Reasons for an alarmOnce you have deactivated the alarm function, the LED shows you reasons for alarms, if any, that were triggered in your absence:• Flashes 1x:

Motion sensor• Flashes 2x:

Ignition on while the anti-theft alarm was primed

• Flashes 3x: Anti-theft alarm disconnected from motorcycle battery

The LED ceases to output this signal after 1 minute, or as soon as you switch on the ignition. If more than one alarm was trig-gered, the flashing codes indi-cate all the reasons.

Emergency unlocking

If the compartments were locked by the central locking system and, for some reason, the remote control unit is not to hand, you can use the emer-gency unlocking routine to open them. Emergency unlock-ing is independent of the cur-rent status of the lock barrel. You cannot use the emergency unlocking routine to open the radio compartment.

1 Insert the ignition key into the lock you want to open.

2 Turn the key to the 45° posi-tion.

3 You can now press in the lock barrel with the key in order to open the lock. Note that the key cannot be removed from the lock bar-rel in this position.

4 You must turn the barrel to the unlocked position or the locked position in order to remove the key. The lock remains locked.

Changing the batteries in the remote control unitsThe batteries in the remote con-trol units are due for replace-ment after approximately 2 to 3 years. You can tell when a bat-tery is weak if LED 3 lights up only briefly, or not at all, when a button is pressed.

e Attention:Use only CR 2032 3V lithium batteries.Take care not to reverse polari-ty when inserting the batteries.Inserting batteries of a different type or inserting the batteries with polarity reversed could cause irreparable damage to the device.

Changing the battery

• Remove screw 6 and lift off the bottom section of housing 7

• Slide the spent battery 10 out from underneath retainer 8 and insert the new battery – making sure the positive terminal is up

• Place the bottom section of the housing on projection 11 at the front edge and close the housing. Make sure that the two guide pins 9 are engaged. Tighten the screw.

– If LED 3 lights up after the bat-tery has been changed, the remote control unit has to be synchronised.

• You do this by holding the remote control unit within the range of the receiver and pressing button 1 twice in succession

– LED 3 starts flashing and goes out a few seconds later

– The remote control unit is now ready for use
