The volume of all the vessel’s enclosed spaces.
A capacity-derived index used to rank a ship
Not a weight!!
Not to be confused with “Tonnes” or “Tons”
Derives from the taxation paid on “Tuns” or casks of wine

DEADWEIGHT TONNAGE
• Sum of cargo, fuel, water, ballast, stores, passengers and crew.
• Weight carrying capacity
• Expressed as DWT
• Measured in metric tonnes or tons

LIGHTWEIGHT
Actual weight of the vessel with machinery but no fuel, passengers, cargo, water etc.
• Used for drydocking calculations or scrap value of the vessel
• Expressed as lightship or lightweight

Weight of water the hull displaces.

A classification society establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ship and offshore structures.

Classification Society
Class validate that the construction of a vessel is in accordance with relevant standards and carry out regular surveys in service to ensure continuing compliance.
More than 50 organizations offering marine classification, 12 of which are members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

Commercial Yachts – both under and over 500 GT
Load line certificate certifies that vessel complies with the load line convention.
Load line convention basically limits the ships on the minimum freeboard it needs to maintain.
The minimum freeboard required by the load line convention is calculated by taking into account many factors including reserve buoyancy of the ship.

Commercial Yachts - 500 GT and over
International standard for the safe operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
The ISM Code requires that safeguards be established against the safety and pollution risks involved in shipboard operations, while giving the flexibility to develop and tailor a safety system to an owner’s/ship manager’s specific operation while complying with regulatory requirements.
Responsibility for this is placed firmly on the companies charged with the ship’s management.

When reviewing the cause of damage or the incident events, reviewing the relative ISM procedure can assist with why the accident occurred in the first place.

The Code sets standards of safety andpollution prevention, which are appropriateto the size and operation of the vessel.
For vessels of this size, standards arenormally set by the relevant internationalconventions.
This Code provides equivalent standards,as permitted by these conventions, whereit is not reasonable or practical to complywith the prescriptive requirements of theinternational convention.
