Luxuries are things which have power over us. They engage the senses and have the capacity to affect us by offering a range of pleasures. Yet luxuries also demand recognition, the capacity to know what they are, to tell the difference between luxuries and necessities. Because luxuries are things which are highly valued in both economic and social terms, an extensive body of knowledge has arisen about how to judge their value, use them appropriately and maximize their potential for pleasure and satisfaction.

The power of luxury goods is not just their social exclusiveness and visibility as status symbols, but the image they have of providing sensory fulfilment: the prospect of experiencing new sensations and pleasures.

There is a tension between the education of the senses to enhance the experience and longing for luxury, that can potentially turn into its opposite: the taking of pleasure in their denial, in celebrating the simplicity and imperfections of the mundane world and everyday objects.

Luxury, then, has its own range of dynamics. There is the dynamic of consumer culture to make some luxuries more widely available. As the range of luxury goods and experiences are extended, this also suggests that a more careful education and cultivation of the senses becomes necessary to learn to appreciate the full qualities of luxuries.

This is the reason behind our choice of creating an extra luxury magazine that is not simply organized as a 5-star show window, where products are chosen without feelings and vulgarly proposed for their sale only in terms of quantity, but rather, conceived as a magazine where the reader is driven along a route of different contents belonging to the luxury world, accurately selected and combined together with the intent of telling a unique story, a tale that actually makes the reader feel the emotional side of luxury products.

DUTCH SUPERYACHT CLUSTER LEADS THE WAYThe latest superyacht figures just released make excellent reading for the Dutch industry. Holland was responsible for a quarter of the world’s deliveries in terms of value in 2015. The Dutch yards launched 22 superyachts worth some Eur 1.18 billion in total. This represents an average of Eur 54 million a yacht, twice that of the average build worldwide (Eur 26.7 million). The association’s A-list yards and suppliers also took orders for another 24 superyachts during 2015, with an average length of 56 metres. This impressive, future-securing portfolio represents an increase of 26.3% on the 2014 figures. Some 22

superyachts were launched in 2015, six more than the previous year, or an increase of 37.5%.

The total length of these 2015 deliveries gives Holland a 19.1% market share globally, a rise of over 7% on the 2014 figures. “The Dutch superyacht cluster is clearly in a very healthy condition,” comments Jeroen Sirag, export director of the HISWA Holland Yachting Group. “We have seen yards such as Amels, Feadship, Hakvoort and Mulder Shipyard all launch their largest projects to date in 2015, while Holland Jachtbouw, Heesen, Oceanco and Royal Huisman have all invested heavily in their facilities to win new contracts and manage growth.”

The Dutch equipment suppliers have also amply showcased their ability to provide higher and higher quality and state-of-the-art technologies. A recent survey showed that 61% of suppliers are expecting the first half of 2016 to be a further improvement on the same period in 2015, a year in which they increased revenues by 6%.

Sirag is also pleased with the current results of the marketing campaign ‘Think Yachts, Think Holland.’ “As more than a quarter of the Netherlands lies below sea level, the need to keep the sea at bay has always prompted the Dutch to embark on major feats of engineering and technology. Our new branding strategy stresses these aspects. As well as the way in which the interests of 40 individual Dutch superyacht companies are well served by being united in our association. Holland is unique in this respect for the way both yards and suppliers have joined forces collectively to promote their country and products in a destination-driven way.”

S/Y AQUIJOVITTERS AND OCEANCO DELIVER THE NEW 85MThe spectacular new 85 meter sailing yacht AQUIJO is the world's largest high-performance ketch and marks Vitters Shipyard's and Oceanco's first delivery in 2016.

Both yards worked closely together throughout all stages of this custom project. Built under the project name P85/3069/Y711, this extraordinary sailing yacht's naval architecture and exterior design is by Tripp Design Naval Architecture with the interior design by Dölker + Voges.

The entire project was brought to fruition under the project management of Master Yachts, the Owner's Representatives. AQUIJO is a ground-breaking sailing superyacht that integrates outstanding sailing performance, state-of-the-art technology and reliability, with exceptional space, comfort and luxury-a combination rarely found on sailing yachts.

The superstructure is designed to blur the boundaries between inside social spaces and outside deck areas, and offers long clear sight lines throughout. Her stunning interior is clean, contemporary and modern.

Performing well at all points of sail and benefitting from exhaustive engineering and superior craftsmanship, there is no question that AQUIJO is a real sailing yacht. Her unique steering system, developed by Vitters Shipyard, translates the hydrodynamic forces of the underwater rudder blades directly to the flybridge steering wheels, providing the helmsman with immediate feedback and acute sensitivity to the feel of the boat, allowing him to experience the pleasure of sailing the yacht to its maximum potential.

Her 90-meter masts are two of the tallest masts in the world. Her performance sail plan is set up to be safe, reliable and simple to handle. AQUIJO pioneers new territory on multiple fronts; she is an astonishing sight to behold as she sets off to sail the world's oceans.

HEESEN YACHTSPROJECTS AKOYA LAUNCHEDYN 17650 is the code that stands for Project Akoya, the latest 50-metre semi-displacement yacht launched by Heesen Yachts in April.

The ‘shark grey’ hull colour adds grace to the elegant exterior lines designed by Omega Architects.

Four clearly defined deck areas provide space for every occasion: a foredeck for secluded relaxation, a vast 70-sqm sundeck, shaded dining on the upper deck aft terrace, and a multifunctional main deck aft. Space has been optimised throughout and YN 17650 has the highest possible internal volume under the 500GT threshold. YN 17650 will undergo intensive sea trials in the North Sea where she is expected to reach a top speed of 23 knots. She will be delivered to her owner in June 2016.

PROJECTS KOMETA THE LARGESTThen christened by her owner Galactica Super Nova, the new 70m, launched in March, is not only the biggest yacht built by Heesen Yachts to date, but she is also one of the top 200 largest yachts in the world and one of the fastest yachts for her size. Galactica Super Nova utilises the revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) technology devised by van Oossanen Naval Architects, which Heesen was the first to put into production. Thanks to the addition of a third engine to power a booster jet, Galactica Super Nova will be capable of reaching a top speed of more than 30 knots. Galactica Super Nova will be extensively tested in the North Sea before being delivered to her owners in May 2016.

BREMEN'S SECRETSPROJECTS UNDERWAY AT LÜRSSENDesigned by Espen Oeino, project Mistral is the latest 106 metre yacht launched by Lürssen in April. She was launched from the floating dock 31 months after her keel was laid in 2013. Built for an experienced owner, the yacht is scheduled to be delivered to her owner later in the year and will be the second yacht Lürssen delivered in 2016. After her delivery she will depart to the Middle East where she will join a fleet of other yachts.

Lürssen has two additional megayacht launches planned for this year. One much larger than project Mistral, it is called Project Jupiter and it is a 120-metre motor yacht with exteriors and interiors designed by H2 Yacht Design. The other is called project Thor and reaches 74 metres in lenght. Project Thor, a completely custom, full displacement motor yacht, will feature interior volume larger than any other 242 Ft. (74m) floating today. While many of the details are still confidential at this point, Moran Yacht & Ship, the team in charge of the build process management from concept to completion, confirmed that Andrew Winch Designs will be responsible for both the interior and exterior of the vessel.

The imposing 156-metre mega yacht Dilbar, known under project name Omar, completed her sea trials in the North Sea at the end of April and it is expected to be delivered this year. Reportletly it was ordered by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov and it will be the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, by lenght the fourth largest one. Among the very little details unveiled, her construction materials of a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.

DOMINATOR ILUMENLUXURY YACHTING HAS GOTA NEW STANDARDMore closely related to a 30-metre yacht, it measures almost 28 metres with the swim platform and over 29 metres with the transformer. The Ilumen yacht series, the 28, 32 and 36 models, combines advanced technology, stunning external design and exquisite interior style and comfort. Design and engineering have been merged to optimally harmonise form and function in a superb new class of ocean-going yachts.

“From the outset, we used a rational design approach typical of big ship or military vessel design,” says Head of Engineering Andrea Agrusta. As a result, the yacht was completely modeled in 3D by the synergies of both, the design team of AM Yacht Design and the engineering team of Naval Head, from the exterior lines to interior architectural and technical details, in order to arrive at a functional, ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing placement and distribution of all the interior and exterior elements – from the engine room to the luxury living space. The result is an ideal use of space and weight distribution that enhances both performance and comfort at sea. To enhance comfort on board when at speed the Ilumen will rely upon an advanced full motion damping system capable of roll and pitch motion reduction

called Humphree Active Ride Control. Humphree interceptors guarantee the lowest possible resistance at each speed, thus increasing speed and lowering fuel consumption.

Moreover, the Dominator HPH (High Performance Hull) is an industry leading innovation that ensures excellent seakeeping performance and both static and dynamic stability even in rough seas. The HPH hull in the semi-displacement version is designed to perfectly match the MAN V8-1200 engines in order to push the Ilumen at cruising speed with optimal RPM and in the minimum specific consumption condition.

The chillers dedicated to the air conditioning system are likewise equipped with a variable frequency driven compressor and incorporate an adjustable electric converter that controls the speed of the motor, thus varying the cooling and heating capacity. Eliminating stop-start cycles in this way considerably increases the energy efficiency and extends the life of the system. Meanwhile, the installation of a solar control interlayer film in glassed areas such as the owner’s cabin lowers direct heat transmittance from the sun by 40 per cent. Such systems make Ilumen yachts more environmentally friendly and economical to run, while the 1500-litre per minute bilge suction capacity is unparalleled in its class.

MONTE CARLO YACHTSMCY 80, THE NEW 24-METER YACHT TO BE PRESENTED IN THE SUMMER. Monte Carlo Yachts will present the new MCY 80 to the public at the Cannes Yachting Festival (6-11 September, 2016) following an exclusive preview for clients and the press in July. The new model, the sixth yacht in the collection, positions itself ideally between the award winning MCY 76 and MCY 86, and continues in Monte Carlo Yachts’ tradition of combining visionary design with concrete results.

When first tasked with designing the new MCY 80, the challenge for the team at Nuvolari Lenard and Monte Carlo Yachts was to elevate the very concept of the yacht to powerful and refined new heights.

“With Monte Carlo Yachts we always strive for maximum space and comfort on board, but we also never forget we’re not building a villa, but a boat,” say Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, Designers. “The MCY 80 is a great yacht, agile and sleek. While designing it, we were inspired by ideas of flair and finesse, and you can see how that transferred from the concept sketches to the real thing.”

With smooth exterior lines and shaped bulwarks which enhance the level of light and space across the main deck, the MCY 80 boasts a curvy, modern look without being too sharp or minimalistic. Signature elements include a class-leading entertainment foredeck and Portuguese bridge. The flybridge, an iconic characteristic of the MCY range, can be equipped with a Jacuzzi, large bar area and sunbathing chaise longues to create an exterior hideaway that is as luxurious as it is intimate.

An instant sense of spaciousness both inside and out becomes immediately apparent upon boarding the MCY 80. Design furnishing choices such as the Hermes, Armani Casa and Minotti elements complete an interior that is effortlessly modern and tasteful.

“We’re very proud of the new MCY 80, which further completes the MCY collection and brings additional choices to our customers,” says Carla Demaria, President of Monte Carlo Yachts.

BENETTIM/Y EQUUS BUILT FOR A EUROPEAN OWNERBenetti launched Crystal 140 BY006 M/Y EQUUS built for a European owner. The yacht belongs to the succesfull Class range and represents the benchmark for semi-custom yachts. First introduced in 2011 to satisfy the needs of diversified clientele for spacious above and below decks areas, this innovative 140' shuttle has since sold an incredible six units.

The BY006 Crystal 140' EQUUS was purchased by an experienced owner, new to Benetti, who has always admired the yard's yachts and was looking for a model that would bring together family and friends without being excessively large.

Contemporary interiors recreating her original design by FrançoisZuretti were created by the Benetti in house design team in collaboration with the owner's designer, PollySturgess' POD Interior Style studio, who personally created the decorative detailing.

Fabio Ermetto, Benetti CCO: “Her launch once again confirms the success of the semi-custom Crystal 140' model, surely the most spacious yacht in her category. This strong point, coupled with timeless design and a quality and level of comfort unique for her category, are the perfect mix for this design. And thanks to our order backlog we are able to offer exceptionally rapid delivery times using our “on-spec”system. Hull number seven, to be delivered in December 2016, is an example of this rare opportunity.

BAGLIETTO46M SOON TO BE LAUNCHEDBaglietto’s 46 m hull #10221 is due to be launched in May, marking the birth of the La Spezia-based boat builder’s new FAST line. This vessel - an evolution of previous models, but also ensuring great continuity with the brand’s tradition - is the result of Baglietto’s cooperation with Francesco Paszkowski Design.

Following in the wake of the sleek aluminium planing yachts that have made the brand’s success all over the world, the new 46 m FAST stands out for its streamlined bow and rakish lines expressing a strong personality, but can also boast an imposing stern with hawses, thereby maintaining the family feeling with previous Baglietto yachts.

The trapeze-shaped windows in the hull alternate with rectangular ones arranged on two different levels, enhancing the slender shape of the hull and giving a more contemporary touch to the yacht's highly charming outer profile.

Another new element characterising the exterior lines is the compact shape of the superstructure, which is not too high to enhance aerodynamic penetration.

When designing this new vessel, great care was also devoted to maximising the outdoor areas, so as to allow passengers to be in closer contact with the sea when both cruising and at anchor, and to enjoy conviviality in the open air. The aft area of the upper deck is indeed like a huge open terrace overlooking the sea: featuring teak floors, it can be furnished with a large table and a spacious sunbathing area.

Fitting-out operations are now about to be completed in the interiors, which have once more been pencilled by Design firm Paszkowski and architect Margherita Casprini and stand out for incredibly spacious volumes for a planing vessel of this size.

The yacht, entirely built in aluminium, will be pushed to a maximum speed of approximately 28 knots by twin MTU 16V4000 engines. It is classified with Lloyd's Register of Shipping and compliant to MCA standards.

SYBARIS, THE NEW 70M PERINI NAVI KETCH READY FOR THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH The Italian shipyard has announced the completion of the technical launching and mast stepping operations of their new 70m ketch.

The project of this new yacht, featuring new styling and powerful and dynamic lines, has been designed in house by Perini Navi Technical and Design office with naval architecture consultation and sail plan optimisation from the French designer Philippe Briand assuring her sailing prowess.

Sybaris represents the latest and most important evolution in the company’s drive for innovation and construction excellence. The Sealium alloy hull features a centreboard keel with variable draught (4.5m – 11.74m) for sailing performance and access into shallow bays or marinas. The streamlined and contemporary superstructure is topped with a flying bridge of no less than 18m in length – the largest of any sailing yacht afloat. At 850 gross tons Sybaris has wide open and well-lit interior spaces with innovative

layout and decor solutions. The sophisticated interior design by PH Design represents the Miami-based studio’s first yacht project.

The yacht is equipped with multiple cutting-edge technologies in terms of sail handling and electric power management. The powerful sail plan of more than 2,300 sqm relies on two carbon fibre masts supplied by Rondal in Holland with composite stays Kevlar running rigging. Controlled by Perini’s latest-generation electric winches and software, the system allow the yacht to be sailed entirely from the cockpit consoles.

Sybaris further represents a decisive step forward in terms of power management with two variable-speed generators supplying electrical power via a DC bus to the vessel’s main electrical grid with the potential to store excess power in lithium polymer batteries. The system improves efficiency, reduces emissions and provides a silent anchor mode at night or in protected areas with the generators switched off.

Following the technical launch and the mast stepping operations, Sybaris will go through an intensive season of test and trails that will led to her completion, forecasted for this summer.

On May 7 the company will host a ceremony in the group’s facility of La Spezia, event meant to celebrate all the people involved in the realization of this vessel that proudly claims to be the largest sailing yacht ever built in Italy.

DESTINATIONS

That's Dubai, the luxury desert. An explosion of lights and endless heights. If during the day the city looks artificial, man-made and far from expressing a real personality, by night, or already at sunset, it boasts all its unparallel charm. Lights, lots of lights, an infinite

stage of colours and sparkles, a breathtaking show of architecture and design where building, unique in the world both for architectural aspects and for heights, seem to touch the sky. Welcome to Dubai, in the Arab Emirates.

Dubai is the second largest Emirate behind Abu Dhabi, Surrounded by the arabic desert, its internationl airport is among the world's busiest ones by international passenger traffic. As to its economy, today less than 5 % of the emirate's revenue comes from oil, whilst its position as trading hub between West and East becomes stronger and stronger, also for geographical reasons. Dubai has attracted foreign investments since the early 1970s, with the birth of large financial and banking centres that were built in the area surrounding the harbour. Today Dubai is certainly one of the top destinations for global tourism, as well as a strategic hub for maritime trade, but in view of the construction of the Dubai International Financial Centre, it is strongly aiming at with strong efforts all aimed at attracting foreign firms in the field of Information Technology and finance. Trade activities, real estate development and tourism, these are the three key-factors of Dubai's economy. Crossed and connected to other Emirates by five main six-lane highways, mainly run by luxury cars and supercars, Dubai is for every kind of traveller, business man or tourist, offering a wide choice of locations and top services of all types, from historical sites to shopping centres, from entertainment to landscape beauties, from desertic sandy hills to sandy beaches surrounded by clear blue waters.

From the world's most luxury 7star hotel, the Burj al-Arab, main icon of Dubai, owned by the Al Maktoum family, to the 828 metres of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building opened in 2010. From the world's largest shopping centre, the Dubai Mall (over 220,000 sqm) to the winter sports centre, the Ski Dubai, built inside the Mall of the Emirates. For those

looking for a home, at the famous “The World", the artificial archipelago of 300 small islands constructed in the rough shape of a world map, off the coast of Dubai, you can buy your own private island at a price of 1 to 15 million dollars.

Palm Islands - Palma Jumeirah, Palma Jebel Ali and Palma Deira - are the palm tree-shaped islands designed to host resorts and luxury hotels, exclusive private villas, water parks, restaurants, shopping centres and other facilties for vacation and entertainent. Today only Jumeirah, considered the eighth wonder of the world, is near completion; Jebel Ali is under construction and Deira is still a project.

The "top experience" offer is completed by the Dubai Waterfront and the Dubailand, respectively, a conglomeration of canals and artificial archipelago with a series of commercial, residential, resort, and amenity areas, and an entertainment complex, considered the most ambitious leisure development ever proposed anywhere in the world.

Level 124 and 125.

Ready to experience record heights?

Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, is a living wonder. Stunning work of art and incomparable feat of engineering, Burj Khalifa has, in concept and execution, no peer. More than just the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa is an unprecedented example of international cooperation, symbolic beacon of progress, and an emblem of the new, dynamic and prosperous Middle East.

It is also tangible proof of Dubai's growing role in a changing world. In fewer than 30 years, this city has transformed itself from a regional centre to a global one. This success was not based on oil reserves, but on reserves of human talent, ingenuity and initiative. Burj Khalifa embodies that vision.

Visitors now have an additional experience in their "At the Top, Burj Khalifa" journey. Unveiled in March 2016, the new attraction will spellbind visitors to At the Top, Burj Khalifa, the popular observation deck on Level 124. A brand-new spiral flight is now open connecting Levels 124 and Levels 125.

While Level 124 is home to At the Top, Burj Khalifa, the observation deck that opened in 2010, Level 125 is part of the At the Top Burj Khalifa SKY journey that takes visitors to the World’s Highest Observation Deck on Level 148. Each of the levels offers a distinguished experience.

The opening of the new spiral flight, effectively will double their delight.

Visitors will now have additional space to move about and absorb views of the city, especially during sunset, when the attraction is at its busiest.

The spiral flight, with 36 steps in white oak and spanning a length of 100 metres, is adorned with a crystal LED chandelier, and enclosed in a glass clad facade that open to scintillating views of the city.

After enjoying the views from Level 124, visitors can now explore one level higher, which serves as a tribute to Arab arts and culture. The entire level is slickly designed and features a Masharabiya motif as part of the décor’s central theme. Here, visitors can take in 360 degree views of the city with signature Viewfinders enabling them to explore the city in vivid details..

Mr Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman, Emaar Properties, said: "Burj Khalifa goes beyond its imposing physical specifications. In Burj Khalifa, we see the triumph of Dubai's vision of attaining the seemingly impossible and setting new benchmarks. It is a source of inspiration for every one of us in Emaar. The project is a declaration of the emirate's capabilities and of the resolve of its leaders and people to work hand in hand on truly awe-inspiring projects.

Emaar had but one inspiration, the unflagging enthusiasm set in motion by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who inspires us to reach for the stars.

The Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme recognises that generating sustainable solutions to global problems demands collaboration across cultures, nations and regions. It is a reflection of the modern world: connected as never before, and changing with great speed. Companies have recognised the value of sharing and collaboration, made possible by new technology. They empower people to say and do things differently; to connect with others, and to create something new. The nations and organisations that take part in Expo, and the millions who visit, will explore the power of connections across the spheres three subthemes:

SUSTAINABILITY looks at ways that we can pursue progress without compromising the fundamental needs of future generations.

MOBILITY examines the creation of smarter and more productive connections, physically and virtually.

OPPORTUNITY is about unlocking the potential for people and communities to contribute to a better future.

The logo is inspired to an archaeological site found in 2002 by His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and the Ruler of Dubai. The site was a place of connection, where objects and people met after travelling long distances. Each year hundreds of artefacts have been found there. There have also been discoveries of seals belonging to an Egyptian Pharaoh, Thutmose III, and cedar wood from what is now Lebanon. One set of artefacts in particular – a series of gold rings – stood out as particularly unique and inspirational.

“What we have witnessed at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show is the genuine buoyancy of the leisure marine market, one which we believe has been heavily supported by our global presence and growing worldwide interest in our take on boating and on-water living,” said Mohammed Hussein Al Shaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft. “We saw an increased number of international visitors, particularly from Europe, Asia, Australia, and the US – all specifically coming to see and experience our product range.”

Gulf Craft’s unique marketing approach continues to center on delivering value, which, according to the builder’s CEO Erwin Bamps, is crucial during difficult economic times. “Rather than taking cost-cutting measures, our focus is on exceeding client expectations and giving customers a greater return on investment in terms of both product and service,” Bamps said.

As the Middle East establishes itself as one of the fastest-growing leisure marine markets in the world, the event has become synonymous with the industry’s finest designs and most inspiring creations. The Dubai International Boat Show is in fact more and more oriented to become a unique “luxury experience

event”, rather than an exhibition concerning beautiful boats. The region’s residents are becoming maritime leisure enthusiasts. They seek more than just yachts and boats, but a “360 degree” experience encompassing all aspects of a luxury lifestyle. This 2016 edition offered the most spectacular superyachts and active offerings, from sailing and fishing trips to water sport stunts, taster sessions of stand-up paddle boarding and windsurfing, as well as first-time-ever beach access and even on-yacht dining experiences.

The Supercar Promenade with the world's most exclusive automobiles was the perfect destination for those wishing to peruse and purchase from high-end luxury and customized motoring brands from around the world. The Marina Luxury & Lifestyle exclusive indoor pavilion brought together exhibitors specializing in luxury services and supplies, including business aviation, luxury interior design, lighting, naval architects, clothing, accessories, yacht charters, yacht brokers, bank financing, Insurance, marinas, yachting destinations and marina developments. Particularly worthy of note among the architectural projects, the Floating Seahorse of The Heart of Europe, the cluster of six islands on The World (Dubai).

Renowned name in the marine industry, with a strong passion for sailing inherited from the father. Chairman and founder of Gulf Craft, he is the man who in 1982 launched a humble UAE-based yacht and boat

manufacturer, in a period of time when yachting was a field with less good prospects compared to other sectors. Despite this uncertain scenario, Alshaali decided to face the challenge and started the business in the marine industry.

Gulf Craft’s leading position and global reputation are built around three key-pillars, the same that built the shipyard’s DNA since the very beginning three decades ago: love for the sea, strong passion for building and the firm belief that the success of the UAE should be based around productive industry.

Today Gulf Craft, among the world’s top shipbuilders, is a globally respected shipyard

with a presence in more than 40 countries worldwide. Thanks to the continued confidence and loyalty of customers and business partners, Gulf Craft holds a strong legacy and solid track record of redefining sea travel for the world’s boat enthusiasts.

Gulf Craft continues to invest heavily in research and development as part of its unremitting efforts to inspire people to explore the wondrous possibilities of on-water living. And this year at the Dubai International Boat Show, with the largest fleet ever showcased by the shipyard in a single event, Gulf Craft impressed crowds with a display of 14 bespoke yachts and boats, that elegantly surrounded the global debut of the youngest tri-deck Majesty 110, the opulent Majesty 90 and the oceangoing Nomad 55.

Mohammed Hussein Al Shaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft, said: “The Dubai International Boat Show resonates deeply with Gulf Craft, a company born in the UAE, and we look forward to the event every year to reaffirm our level of commitment to our customers, and to devoted seafarers in the region. The show serves as not only a key international platform for showcasing our latest craft, but also as an opportunity to represent the UAE as a global player in the leisure marine industry.”

Once upon a time, an enchanting, captivating,

charming megayacht, named Serenity, set sail from

Savona to Dubai.

The elegance and outstanding class of the new SF40 M/Y “Serenity” made her debut at the latest edition of the Monaco Yacht Show. In March 2016 this first unit in the Mondomarine SF line completed her first transcontinental journey from Savona, where the shipyard is based, to Dubai, to be exhibited at the 2016 Dubai International Boat Show.

After her 4,500 mile maiden journey, M/Y Serenity, highly anticipated in UAE as interiors

décor have been created by the Dubai based Designer Fatema Almaidan (SFL Design), was displayed in Dubai, where captured the attention of VIP crowds, operators and visitors.

Engineered by Mondomarine and with exteriors and layout designed by Luca Vallebona, the SF40 is a new concept born to provide a clean and well-balanced design together with a new conception of internal and external volumes and layout. Themes like space and its flow, as well as a general balance within the profile, are at the core of this choice.

Each part of the yacht has been conceived both individually and in relation to the others so to provide a flow of aesthetic continuity and functionality where the eye is not hit by any predominant feature but it is instead attracted by a harmoniously calibrated combination of elegant elements.

The distinctively clean exterior and interior lines produce a timeless sense of luxury, immune from the influence of fashion and very focused on the enjoyment of the ambient and on the rediscovery of the essence of travel, adventure and discretion without any ostentation.

The interiors Designer Mrs. Fatema Almaidan has repeated this method in perfect balance into the main salon, where the scene is dominated by the white high gloss lacquered outward surfaces and the white leather ceilings, again in well calibrated balance with the warm base rosewood essence.

Under the influence of the Designer’s Middle East origins, it has been created a figurative “leitmotif” which enhance big architrave in rosewood all over the perimeter of the salon. The application of the off-white and brick-red leather as finishing of principals

furniture offers a particular sense of calm and soundproofed environment.

Same is for the lounge on the Upper/Owner’s deck, designed as a Cinema room, where, in addition to the great movie themes printed on the curtains, sensible composure warm materials without reflections have been carefully used. Here’s how the yard managed to absorb sound from the furniture and allow guests to experience the movie.

More decorative patterns have been developed in the 4 guests cabins, in term of finishing, especially in their en-suite bathrooms, characterized by colored onyx which gives the “tone key” to the cabin itself. The four tones selected have been repeated on fabrics and coverings, providing a harmonious effect in combination with the metal inserts installed among the leather panels.

M/Y Serenity houses four guest cabins on the lower deck, all with proper ensuite bathrooms, and an owner cabin on the upper deck (Owner’s deck) with unusual dimensions and layout.

Special attention to the position and privacy of the Owner’s cabin motivates its unusual layout on two semi-levels, each with its own specific connotation: the upper part fully immersed in the surroundings, with a panoramic open view to the fore and to the lower area, more intimate and private, with light coming from the top and from the sides to convey this space a relaxing and hideaway sense.

The finishing scheme applied on the owner suite include the application of high gloss rosewood veneer on vertical structures and custom furniture , together with white Calacatta marble and a Portoro light frame around it. These materials give lightness and simple elegance to the owner suite area, making out of it a contemporary space without any redundancy.

"Moonstone" unveiled at night in Dubai. A

mong its many touted properties, a moonstone is known as the psychic’s gemstone. It embodies white — colour energy — purity and unity the stone has a luminous sheen and colours of light dance through it. Project Moonstone promises to be all of these thing.

Page 43: Superyacht Digest | May 2016

SUPERYACHT DIGEST | May 201643

Dutch shipyard Ocenaco, in affiliation with Van Geest Design, has developed a distinctive, innovative and artful project known as Moonstone. The defining difference between Moonstone and all other yachts is her uniquely conceived faceted hull sides. The elegant lines and faceted hull suggest a hypnotic glamour, just as one sees in the multiple surfaces of a finely cut precious stone.

The multi-angled surface shapes of the hull sides reflect the water and play off sunlight. The unique ‘twinkle effect’ provides a visual link from Moonstone to the sky and the sea. This striking ‘facet’ motif repeats in many other areas of the yacht and is used in conjunction with special lighting effects.

In addition to working with these exceptional design components and lighting techniques, Oceanco is engineering the 90-meter Moonstone to be PYCcompliant and capable of accommodating considerably more than 12 guests.

LIGHTING DESIGN FEATURESOverhead panel — a backlit surface linked to fish-eye cameras can capture the magic of a night sky, a sunset or a sunrise as well as their refection on the water. Extremely versatile, this technology can also be used to affect an array of colour, moods, and ambience.

Hull-side facets — Custom hull panel lights triggered by 300 individually dimmable white triangles per hull side create unlimited lighting possibilities.

At night, these lights generate a unique shimmering twinkling effect.

Swimming pool and hot tub — The pool walls have dimmable lights that will create a warm welcoming glow.

Boot stripe lighting — its horizontal line of light plays with the water line of the yacht.

The new 90m distinctive, innovative project by Oceanco and Van Geest Design.

SPECIAL DESIGN FEATURESThe yacht has been designed and engineered on the Oceanco 90M platform taking full advantage of its efficient proven technical layout. The general arrangement was designed to give infinite flexibility. Including an entire Owner’s deck, a generous gym and spa area, a cinema and a touch-and-go helicopter pad.

The hull light panels have been designed to be self-sufficient with the use of 70 square meters standard solar panels on top of the superstructure. A day of sunlight could potentially allow the dimming and illuminating light panels to run for an estimated three hours.

The plumb bow has an integrated mooring and anchoring bay, which helps keep the bow area uncluttered.

Unfolding navigation wings are designed to increase visibility — these stations spread out laterally like wings suspended in mid-air. Side platforms forward give access to water toys and rescue tenders. Aft side platforms allow access to two main guest tenders and an outdoor lounge play area.

The yacht will be PYC classed for more than 12 guests.

YACHT AS ART

The surfaces of Moonstone’s unique multi-faceted hull and superstructure allows for a multitude of diverse visual effects. In its natural state, the faceted surface of the yacht constantly mirrors its environment— it reflects the sun, sky, clouds and sea.

As the facets contain LED lights that are digitally programmed, a mere swipe of the finger on a mobile device will manipulate those lights and immediately allow the creation of a personalized light show.

The power is built into Moonstone’s design for one to curate an ongoing video art experience with the yacht as a medium. The possibilities are endless.

BEYOND IMAGINATION.THE FLOATING SEAHORSE,

ESSENTIALLY A BOAT, NOT A VILLA.

Dubai is a global city, a business hub and a popular holiday destination for millions of tourists every year. In 2014, Dubai International Airport was the world’s busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic. Currently the city is home to over 200 different nationalities, making it an interesting proposition for those looking to live and work in Dubai. Over recent years, many multi-national companies have opened up offices in the city. Today, Dubai is a business hub, similar to London, New York and Hong Kong and with the World Expo 2020 on Dubai’s horizon, there has never been a better time to invest in the world’s fastest growing and most exciting hospitality market.

Last year at the Dubai International Boat Show, a new benchmark in the luxury lifestyle market worldwide was introduced by Kleindienst Group, the biggest European real estate company in Dubai, as unique investment opportunity. Have you ever dreamt about living close to marine life and underwater? Kleindienst has made it a reality for the privileged few in the diverse and innovative city of Dubai. The Floating Seahorse, a truly unique underwater product, the first of its kind in the world, is an aesthetically designed contemporary marine style product that generated a wealth of global interest worldwide since its launch in 2015. And one year from the launch, each unit has been sold!

In real terms, The Floating Seahorse is a marine style retreat (essentially a boat without propulsion) which has its own plot in the Arabian Gulf. To be located only a short boat ride from the coast of Dubai, each individual Floating Seahorse will boast three levels, one underwater, one at sea level and an upper deck.

The upper deck is the perfect place for alfresco dining and relaxation and features an informal bed, a mini bar, a kitchenette and a beautiful glass-bottomed Jacuzzi. The deck can be converted into a winter bedroom which can be enclosed with retractable drapes.

The estimated completion date for The Floating Seahorse is the end of 2016.

For people wondering why this particular project is called The Floating Seahorse, Josef Kleindienst explains “The Seahorse is an endangered species and we will create an artificial coral reef beneath the luxury retreats which will be a protected area in which seahorses can safely live and breed. LONDONTHE “GO-TO” LUXURY HUB

FOR THE WORLD’S WEALTHY.

by GREG ROSS

SUPERYACHT DIGEST | May 201657

You grasp the sheer scale of London's wealth when you look down at it from the sky. Skyscrapers tower above the City and Docklands like vast monuments to finance. Shoppers teem around Oxford Street and Piccadilly. Georgian terraces and inter-war

suburbs alike are not just homes but also prime real estate. And with wealth comes power. London is a global city whose dominant status both within the UK and the rest of the world is unquestionable.

All signs point to growth in the UK luxury sector, bolstered by the rise of American tourist sales, according to a recent study by Wealth-X and Walpole, an alliance of 170 of Britain’s finest luxury brands. London remains the country’s luxury hub, and luxury brands continue to invest in the city. “We see the UK and moreover London retaining its status as the “go-to” luxury hub for the world’s wealthy,” Madelaine Ollivier, Senior Luxury Analyst, Wealth-X, commented. “The central location of the UK and its attractive business and fiscal environment – barring a potential exit from the EU — continues to appeal to a diverse cross-section of nationalities. London remains one of the world’s most established luxury cities and its luxury infrastructure continues to make it an exciting and dynamic place to be for both brands and consumers.”

BRITAIN'S RICHEST DOUBLEDTHEIR WEALTH IN 10 YEARS.

According to The Sunday Times the collective wealth of Britain's richest people has more than doubled in the last 10 years. The wealthiest 1,000 individuals and families now have a combined fortune of £547.126 billion, up from £249.615 billion in 2005, despite the world economy being gripped by a punishing recession over much of the last decade. Plain old millionaires increasingly struggle to count themselves among the mega-rich, with a fortune of £100m now required to make it into the top 1,000. That is £15m higher than last year’s minimum.

The list includes 117 billionaires, up from 104 last year. They account for a total wealth of £325.131

billion and 80 of them are based in London. It means the capital has more sterling billionaires than any other city in the world.

The city is home to 251 overseas banks. No-one doubts London's pervasive economic influence. More than a third of global foreign exchange takes place every day in London. London's stature is remarkable. Leading trading power and financial center, the UK is the third largest economy in Europe after Germany and France. With a GDP equal to that of Saudi Arabia, London is both a significant international focal point and commanding national capital. The city completely dominates the political, cultural and economic life of the UK to an extent rarely seen elsewhere. New York might rival it as an economic hub, but it isn't at the same time the seat of political power in the US or home to the nation's central bureaucracy. In Germany the political capital Berlin is balanced by a financial hub in Frankfurt and industrial centres in Munich and Hamburg.

London is “where all the rich people are,” says John Lanchester, author of Capital and How to Speak Money. “It's where all the media is, all the power is, all the culture is, all the money is - that is a lot of alls.”

LUXURY SECTORS MEET IN LONDON IN MAY 2016

London is arguably one of the most important international market for superyacht and luxury yacht builders, being home to more than twice as many billionaires and millionaires than any other city in the world.

If you are interested in yachts or in London property, this is your must-event, the London Yacht Jet and Prestige Car Show.

US EMBASSY IN LONDON TO BECOME A LUXURY HOTELPlans have been unveiled to turn the historic US embassy building in Mayfair, which dates back to the 1950s, into a luxury hotel. The new hotel, developed by real estate group Qatari Diar, will offer a spa, five restaurants, six luxury shops and a ballroom for 1,000 guests. “We have studied the building’s design and its history as well as its surroundings to deliver an architecturally and socially coherent proposal, which will transform this purpose-built embassy into a world-class hotel,” said British architect David Chipperfield. The Americans sold the embassy to Qatari Diar in 2009 after deciding it was in need of bigger and safer offices for its 1,000 staff. US ambassador Matthew Barzun and his staff will move to its new home in Nine Elms alongside the Dutch embassy next year.

DEMONSTRATES THE ART OFTRUE LUXURY CONVEYANCE

As the world leader in the art of true luxury conveyance, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has extended its expertise to design a suite of elegant luggage to complement Wraith, the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever created.

The collection, conceived by Rolls-Royce Bespoke Designer Michael Bryden and designed in the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Design Studio led by Director of Design Giles Taylor, comprises two Grand Tourer valises, three Long Weekender bags and one Garment Carrier, meticulously designed to be housed in the luggage compartment of a Rolls-Royce Wraith. Like every Rolls-Royce motor car, they can be commissioned to the customer’s exacting specifications.

Particular attention to detail has therefore been paid to the area that most often comes into contact with the owner, ensuring the experience is an entirely effortless one. The handles have been designed to ensure an even weight distribution, meaning no undue pressure is placed on the hand. An invisible stitch, a skill honed in the world of Haute Couture and used on the steering wheel of Wraith, has been applied to ensure a perfectly smooth and tactile finish.

An intimate family portrait by Lucian Freud painted in 1992; a pivotal example from 1864 of British Aestheticism at auction for the first time in 100 years by Frederic, Lord Leighton; and from 1778, an exquisite portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds on

the market for the first time, are among the great works of British art to be offered in a sale alongside an exhibition which will launch Christie's 250th anniversary in London this June.

Building on the success of Christie's pioneering series of curated Evening Sales to date, including Looking Forward to the Past and The Artist's Muse in 2015, Christie's will celebrate the artistic legacy of four centuries of British artists, with Defining British Art: Evening Sale (30 June) and Defining British Art: Loan Exhibition (17 June to 15 July).

Ever since James Christie first opened his doors for business in 1766, in St James’s London, where the

headquarters remain today, Christie’s has championed British art and artists, with both Reynolds and Gainsborough among the regular visitors to Christie’s salerooms. The greatest masterpieces are those that define the artist; paintings and sculpture that reflect the quintessential nature of that artist’s lasting legacy. Christie’s Loan Exhibition and Evening Sale will present works which exemplify this.

Christie’s has continued to be recognised as tastemakers in the art market, continually innovating its sales calendar and curating sales to create different perspectives of the art market and collecting trends. Over the last 250 years, Christie’s has expanded its reach beyond the headquarters in London, with first sales in America in 1970, then Hong Kong in 1986 and more recently the Middle East in 2006, China in 2013 and India in 2013. This continuing spirit of innovation has enabled art collecting to become truly global, allowing clients to acquire or sell works across sale locations, collecting categories and via auction, private sale and online. Within our 250th year, Christie’s also celebrates 10 Years in Dubai and 30 Years in Asia.

MARINA LIFEIN LONDON

London has a secret, and it is called St. Katharine Docks. It is the only central London marina, a place where visitors can enjoy the unique experience of sailing up the Thames and mooring right next to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

This beautiful marina, which today offers shops, bars and restaurants, has been a focus of commerce and human endeavour since the 10th century.

The Docks are built on a site with over 1000 years of dramatic history. The roots of the buildings on today's site can be traced back to the 10th Century when King Edgar gave 13 acres of land to 13 Knights, with the right to use the land for trade.

When the Industrial Revolution came to London, and the River Thames became a super-highway for the rapidly growing city. London's existing docks could not handle the amount of trade and Parliament authorised the construction of new, purpose built docks.

The waterside community has evolved to offer something for everyone, and today, 181 years on from its opening as a busy industrial site, St Katharine Docks is a haven of tranquillity, nestled in the heart of the City of London, offering inspiring space for businesses and luxury homes. The Marina houses up to 200 luxury yachts and historic barges, and provides space for private and corporate events.

Geneva, the city with the highest number of international organizations in the world, including the headquarters of the United Nations and the Red Cross. What is so special about Geneva for the Swiss and the rest of the world? The answer is that it has far greater international influence than any other city of 200'000 inhabitants. Today, Switzerland's second largest city is home to around twenty international organisations. The permanent missions of over 160 States represent their governments in the city's international conferences and organisations.

Geneva is a centre focused on the international economy. Whether private corporate or business, finance, in its widest sense, undeniably plays a major economic role in Geneva, which is a base for around a hundred foreign banks. Global city and financial center, third in Europe behind London and Zürich, Geneva has the third-highest quality of life of any city in the world. Behind Tokyo, Osaka and Moscow, it is the fourth most expensive city in the world.

Its economy is mainly services oriented in the finance sector, which is specialised in private banking and financing of international trade with an asset management of about 1 trillion USD. Geneva also hosts the international headquarters of important companies like JT International, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Caterpillar, DuPont, Procter & Gamble and Oracle Corporation and boasts a long tradition of watchmaking with brands such as Baume et Mercier, Charriol, Chopard, Franck Muller, Patek Philippe, Gallet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex, Universal Genève, Raymond Weil, Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Frédérique Constant, etc..

Ranks 5th in the top five list of the cities with the highest number of super rich people, Geneva is also one of the greenest cities in Europe with 20% of the country covered in green areas.

The GDP per Swiss citizen is around $60,000. Swiss banking and financial institutions keep this country and its economy afloat. It is important to note that some of the wealthiest people and companies in the world own Swiss bank accounts and therefore Switzerland has excess capital to use for investment purposes.

Richness is part of the DNA of the city for its historical tradition of being discreet towards financial aspects. But it is another element that makes this city a "bunker" for super rich people. Switzerland, in general, is striclty involved in the development of free ports throughtout the world. In particular, Geneva’s free port – a series of non-descript warehouses in southwest Geneva – is home to billions of Swiss francs’ worth of fine art and other riches, including the world’s biggest wine cellar. According to the specialist art journal Connaissances des Arts, in 2013 the free port held around 1.2 million artworks. According to Jean-Rene Saillard of the British Fine Art Fund, "It would be probably the best museum in the world if it was a museum". In 2014 Geneva celebrated the 125th anniversary of its free port with the opening of a new storage facility known as M-North. It offers over 10,400 square metres of high security climate-controlled warehouse space especially for the storage of art.

Even if Geneva’s free port is tightening up checks on wealthy individuals storing fine art and other riches at its huge warehouse facilities. to avoid the possible risks of trade-free zones to Switzerland’s reputation, the city’s free port facilities remain popular among collectors. For as long as goods are stored at free ports, owners pay no import taxes or duties, which can amount to 15 per cent in some countries. If the work is sold at the free port, the owner pays no transaction tax either.

FALCON 8X, Dassault Aviations'new flagship

Dassault Aviation’s new flagship, the Falcon 8X made its debut at the NBAA’s Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (BACE) in Las Vegas in November 2015. The three aircraft in the Falcon 8X flight test program have nearly completed all certification test requirements and to date have accumulated over 650 flight hours in 325 flights. FAA and EASA certification is expected by midyear and entry into service in the second half of 2016.

With eight passengers and three crew, the Falcon 8X will be capable of flying 6,450 nm (11,945 km) non-stop at M.80 and will be able to connect Beijing with New York; Hong Kong with London and Shanghai with Los Angeles. The aircraft will feature a cabin 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) high, 2.34 m (7 ft 8 in) wide and 13 m (42 ft 8 in) long and offer customers the most diverse selection of cabin layouts on the market

-- more than 30 configurations in all. It will be available in three galley sizes, two with a crew-rest option. Operators will have an extensive selection of passenger seating areas of varying lengths capable of supporting different lavatory layouts, including a lavatory with shower.

The Falcon 8X will be equipped with three PW307D engines delivering 6,722 lbs of thrust each – a 5% increase compared to the PW307A that powers the Falcon 7X. Combined with improvements to wing design, the new power plant will make the 8X up to 35% more fuel efficient than any other aircraft in the ultra-long range segment and offer a significant decrease in community noise and NOx emissions.

In addition to the quietest cabin and the most advanced digital flight control system in business aviation, the big trijet will be available with Dassault’s new

FalconEye Combined Vision System, the first head up display in the industry to combine synthetic and enhanced vision capabilities.

The 8X will offer the greatest range and the longest cabin of any Falcon and feature the 7X’s exceptional operating economy and short-field performance.

For decades Philippe Briand’s studio has been a focal point for innovative, technical yacht design. It is a place where trends – strongly based on research - are made and innovations are conceived and refined; the use of glass in sailing yacht design is no exception. Since first introducing curved superstructure windows to his designs over 15 years ago, the possibilities offered through the advancement of glass manufacturing technology have immensely increased the potential applications available for this versatile material. Briand ensures he keeps firmly abreast of these developments: “I spend a lot of time with glass suppliers, helping them to understand the

specific requirements of using glass on board any yacht, let alone a performance sailing superyacht like Vertigo or Mari Cha IV (actual Samurai). This continual dialogue ensures that my concepts are always on the cutting edge of what is possible.”

PHILIPPE BRIANDTHE USE OF GLASS IN SAILING YACHT DESIGNFresh off the back of an exhilarating Caribbean regatta season, where an impressive number of Philippe Briand yachts took podium places, the designer considers the new trend that puts glass firmly in the spotlight in sailing yacht design.

The fashion for glass superstructures is gaining traction in yacht design circles. In coming years, the majority of new launches will have a glass coach roof at the very least, and Philippe Briand is at the forefront of this design trend with his sleek, modern concepts including the 130’ Philippe Briand design pictured below. He credits the material’s continuing growth in popularity to its flexibility, as well as the aesthetic appeal of the futuristic shapes that glass can create.

The application of glass in a sailing environment in particular is interesting; the ability to bring the drama and beauty of the exterior inside adds a new dimension to the atmosphere within. Glass can offer near-360-degree panoramic views of the waterline, as well as the uniquely dramatic perspective of a superyacht mast from its base.

As Briand hears from clients very regularly, owners want their yachts to let in more natural light and provide them with a greater connection with the environment outside. Clever use of glass gives the ‘wow’ factor to any yacht design, creating beautiful, elegant shapes, while also offering an opportunity to embrace new technologies at the same time.

Though the aesthetic of his designs and concepts are key, Briand is a true yachtsman, with high- performance design in his heart. The practicality of using glass is therefore always at the front of his mind,

and the ability to walk on top of these structures, unhindered, is of paramount importance. A compound security glass is often used, which is created by using two or more plies of chemically toughened glass. This glass is approved by both Lloyd’s Register and ABS, and accepted by all major classification societies.

As larger and larger areas of the superstructure can be built entirely from glass, the team at Philippe Briand has been exploring the use of compound security glass with built-in multifunctional sensor technology, which allows early detection of any glass damage. Here, integrated sensors permanently measure the state of the panes and the information is passed over to the management and alarm systems.

Another technology that has been developed is particularly crucial when using glass in the interior of vessels. You can now, with the switch of a button, create a private space on board by turning clear glass opaque. For use in the guest and owner areas, and as clever dividers throughout, this technology stylishly and practically creates virtual space on board.

All these factors ensure that the design applications of glass in luxury yachts are constantly evolving, cementing its increasing use as a trend that we will be seeing grace the world’s favourite cruising grounds for years or decades to come.

THEBRITISH VIRGIN

ISLANDSBY CAMILA FAWCETT

Each of the BVI has its own special beauty, character and legends. Their sheltered waters are considered to be some of the finest blue-water cruising grounds in the Caribbean.

Balmy climate, miles of sparkling sandy beaches, unparalleled dive sites, safe waters, a constant gentle breeze and the abundance of secluded anchorages, make this 60 -island archipelago a haven for sailors, big game fishermen and divers.

BVI visitors relish in the discovery of their pristine palm-fringed beaches, rugged peaks and rich vegetation, while some islands are uninhabited and designated as national parks.

Discovered by Columbus, and then by pirates and fighting Europeans, the archipelago is split between the cosmopolitan US Virgin Islands and the more low-key British Virgin Islands. A fragmented jigsaw of green isles in a turquoise sea, the British Virgin Islands remain relatively unspoilt with long sweeps of land linking lush green headlands.

TORTOLACAPITAL ISLAND OF THE BVIPowdery white-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and a sheltered yacht-filled harbour characterize the island of Tortola, where the past of the West Indies meets the present of the BVI. Swim or stroll the white-sand beaches, explore ancient ruins or the delectable local cuisine, or drop anchor and rock with the rhythm of the azure ocean. In Tortola, the largest island of the BVI chain, there’s a variety of Caribbean vacation activities to indulge in.

VIRGIN GORDAPARADISE AWAITS YOUNatural beauty is in abundance on the third largest of the Virgin Islands, located only a few miles from Tortola. The dramatic shape of the island Virgin Gorda reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining woman, or “Fat Virgin.”

Since being "discovered" as a tourist destination in the early 1960's, Virgin Gorda is still not over-commercialized. With only a few resorts and a sprinkling of villas, it has a pleasing intimacy. The passengers you meet on the nine-seat plane are likely to show up at the next table at dinner. The local people are well educated, friendly and caring, family oriented and remarkably aware of their place in the world.

Best known for "The Baths," a unique geological formation near the tip of the island comprised of giant boulders on the beach, Virgin Gorda is now a protected national park where snorkelers can swim in and among the magnificent boulders and caves.

Virgin Gorda entices travelers with its yacht clubs, quiet coves, safe anchorages and luxury resorts and villas. On the North Sound and accessible only by water, the exclusive Bitter End Yacht Club offers a premier resort and barefoot elegance.

sheltering reef include Cow Wreck Beach, Flash of Beauty, Bones Bight and Windlass Bight.

Clear springs that bubble from coral beds support a variety of wildlife special to the Virgin Islands area, including loblolly, frangipani, turpentine trees, feathery sea lavender and wild orchids. On the nature trail at Bones Bight, catch a glimpse of the rare rock iguanas native to BVI's Anegada, or discover the exotic birds at Nutmeg Point.
