    The Mead School District is seeking applications for the position of superintendent, to begin July 1, 2019. Dr. Tom Rockefeller, who has done an outstanding job for the past 13 years, will be retiring.

    This is an excellent leadership opportunity in a highly regarded school district.

    THE DISTRICT & COMMUNITY The Mead School District is a public school system serving the North Spokane community for over 100 years. Current student enrollment is 10,500+ and the district has grown by more than 1,000 students over the last ten years. A recent demographics study predicts growth of 3,000 students in the next ten years.

    Mead students, staff, parents and community all contribute to the district's success and reputation as a top-tier school district in Spokane and the state of Washington. It is common to find alumni moving back to the Mead School District so their children can experience the same excellent learning opportunities they, and often their parents, experienced while Mead students.

    COMPENSATION

    The Mead Board of Directors anticipates negotiating a compensation package in the $200,000 - $250,000 range with a highly qualified candidate.

    The superintendent will be expected to reside in the district and be an active member of the community.

    The Mead School District has an annual budget of $132 million and employs an exceptionally strong staff at all levels. The 1,342 employees include 675 certificated employees, 615 classified staff and 52 administrators.

    The district serves a rapidly growing community located just 10 miles north of downtown Spokane. The Mead community has a long-standing tradition of supporting education. In 2015 patrons approved a Facilities Improvement Bond to replace Northwood Middle School and fully modernize both Midway & Shiloh Hills elementary schools. In 2018 a $114.5 million bond received 67% approval. This bond will build a new middle school, new elementary school, new transportation co-op facility, new maintenance facility and new outdoor, 4,500 seat stadium that will serve as the location for Mt. Spokane High School and Mead High School home football games and soccer matches, plus provide our award winning marching band programs with performance and practice facilities.

    DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    Integrity. Effective communicator with the ability to inspire. A passion for the education of all students. Success as an instructional leader, building principal and superintendent (preferred, but not required.) Experience in contract negotiations. Understanding of school finance. A willingness to make hard decisions when necessary, and hold him/herself accountable. A doctorate is preferred, but not a requirement for consideration.

    CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

    Maintain and continually seek to improve the high-quality staff and programs that have characterized the Mead School District. Facilitate the development of a Strategic Plan to serve as a roadmap and guide for the Board of Directors, administration, and staff in addressing current and future issues and challenges. Maintain the sense of a "small district" while designing systems to deal with significant enrollment growth. Address the fiscal challenges presented by recent legislative actions limiting future levy collections and actively engage with elected officials on education legislation as a strong advocate for students. Develop programs that meet the needs of all students, including those living at or below the poverty level. Be a visible, active member of the Mead community.
