This is a drop in free fresh lunch. May 18th is the date for the third annual Kids in the Kitchen event at Mead. This event showcases the many talents of our Mead students. Staff and community volunteers are putting the finishing touches on the decorations and raffle baskets. Tickets for the event are available online at show- tix4u.com. Search Kids in the Kitchen. The cost of the tickets are $40 each. Our community supports this event through their generous donations and support. All funds raised stay here at Mead to support the ongoing learning of in- novative instructional practices for our students. Our final school-wide morning meeting is May 26th at 9:00 and features 5th grade and 4K/Kindergarten. We will be recognizing and celebrating our 5th graders as well the teachers who are retiring from Mead. This year Mrs. Huntington and Mrs. Walton are retiring from their teaching careers. Both teachers have brought so much to our school and have been dedicated to bringing unique learning experiences to our Mead students. Watch for more information from our Parent-Teacher Committee (PTC). We have some great ideas to bring to the school and have ideas to get more input and involvement from our Mead parents. Watch for information at the Family Appreciation Night on May 11th. I look forward to seeing all of you at the May events. I also look forward to helping you make summer plans for learn- ing and adventure with your students through the many options for this summer. Mrs. Margie Dorshorst

Dig It: Volunteers Needed!

Mead Elementary Charter is planning to utilize the school garden this year- we need your help and interest! First, a little background: The AmeriCorps Farm to School program works to de-crease childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating habits in students and increasing access to local foods in schools. AmeriCorps members Megan Rheaume-Brand and Alex Maves have been working in your school, amongst several other Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools, through nutrition/agriculture education, local food taste tests, farmer visits, and now the school gar-dens.

We are offering free seeds, some started plants, and possibly tools as we get donations to those Mead families and students who are interested in adopting a free garden bed to grow food for themselves. The goal is to give Mead families another fun family activity to do over the summer, while promoting healthy eating and hands-on learning. If you are interested in adopting a garden bed, please contact either Megan at [email protected]; 715-507-0703 or Alex at [email protected]; 920-470-1331.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with a general clean-up of the twenty 3X3 raised beds at Mead as well as seed starting which we will of-

fer soil, egg cartons, and seeds for. Any donations of garden hoes, rakes, spades, shovels, trowels, and kneeling pads would be much appreciated

as well. We look forward to hearing from you in getting involved in your school community’s school garden! If you have any

other questions or ideas, please contact Megan Rheaume-Brand and/or Alex Maves with the above contact information.

Thank you!
