RIP bushing in detail Cut-away of general design1. Depending on the current rating, the active part is wound
on either a center tube or a solid conductor2. Active part is made out of Resin Impregnated Paper body
with inserted aluminium foils3. Current transformer extensions: if current transformers
are required, the ground layer is extended4. MICAGEL dry filler5. Mounting flange with integrated measuring tap6. Porcelain or silicon composite insulator for outdoor
applications7. Head with terminal (Al / Cu)8. Transformer side shield ensures a smooth electrical
field grading
MICAFIL RIP bushing advantages excellent electrical and thermal values• Partial discharge free up to double of the nominal phase
to ground service voltage• High thermal endurance (class E, 120 °C)• Low dielectric losses (tan δ ≤0.40 %)
Superb design• Compact, space saving• Flexible design allows for adaption to different customer
needs and transformer requirements• Low weight
Easy to use, maintenance-free• No maintenance or constant monitoring necessary• Installation, storage and transportation is possible at
any angle

—Leading in bushings technologySince the 1980s
ABB Switzerland Ltd has been closely associated with innovation and quality for decades
Since the 1980s, the company has been the worldwide leader in Resin Impregnated Paper bushings (RIP), using an oil-free and thus dry and clean technology. RIP bushings are characterized by their outstanding technical performance: the small and lightweight design facilitates easy transportation, storage and installation while the oil-free construction requires absolutely no maintenance, is leakage-free and therefore exceptionally safe and environmentally friendly. These characteristics combined with genuine Swiss quality make RIP bushings the first choice for even the most demanding applications.
Our background Based in Zurich, ABB Switzerland originally produced only traditional bushings such as OIP (Oil Impregnated Paper) and RBP (Resin Bonded Paper). As the world’s first company, ABB developed its RIP bushings (resin impregnated paper) already in the 1960s. At the end of the 1980s, we were again the very first to start the production of 420 kV RIP bushings and in 1996 of 550 kV RIP bushings. For the last 30 years, ABB has been operating its bushings production exclusively with the superior RIP technology. The continuously improved design of MICAFIL RIP high-voltage bushings sets new standards regarding quality, reliability and state-of-the-art safety solutions. In 2012, ABB was the first to launch the new paperless RIS (Resin Impregnated Synthetics) bushings: EasyDry. This new high voltage transformer bushings are a modern
bushing technology and sets new standards regarding quality, reliability, safety and lead time. Being a member of the ABB Group since 2004, we have access to comprehensive resources, particularly in the fields of high-voltage engineering, material research and applied physics.
Your advantages We are familiar with your goals: increasingly ambitious targets of improved availability and prolonged lifetime, continuously advanced safety standards, more efficient capacity utilization of your assets, while cost pressure remains intense. To cope with these demanding objectives, many utilities throughout the world now rely on our RIP technology for good reasons: our bushings are the most dependable and safest, leading to an excellent cost- performance ratio. We therefore offer you a most valuable contribution towards reaching improved overall performance figures.
Our solution The RIP bushings’ condenser bodies consist of solid cores. These are made of special crepe paper being wound following a certain sequence, and having numerous intermediate layers of coated aluminum foil embedded for the necessary electrical field grading. Subsequently, these paper condenser cores are vacuum dried and afterwards impregnated with a high temperature epoxy resin. These computer controlled processes of vacuum drying and impregnation as well as the final curing are very sensitive. They are run under vacuum in tightly controlled ambient conditions and in hermetically sealed environments. We are proud of our leading position in this technology, providing our customers with profound expertise based on over 120,000 RIP bushings successfully in operation.
