E ating good, healthful food isn’t always easy or tasty. But it’s important. Just like a car needs clean gas in its engine to run well, people need good

food to have energy for life. This includes fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and other nutrients. Life gets busy, and often we all reach for something quick and easy instead of making good food choices. Like chips, cookies or something you can microwave in 60 seconds. Most of this stuff has little nutritional value. It just tastes good. But scientists have proven that everyone needs certain vitamins and minerals to stay healthy in life. So, if we don’t get these from food, where can we get them? Supplements can help, and Nature’s Sunshine supplements are great! Sunshine Heroes are specially designed for kids. They offer a variety of nutrients children need as their bodies grow and develop—vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, probiotics and more. And they taste so good, kids love to eat them!

Multiple Vitamin & Mineral Vitamins help your body work properly. Each vitamin does different things to help you grow and stay healthy. Vitamins A and D help your bones and teeth stay strong. Vitamin C helps your blood vessels stay healthy and it helps wounds heal. The B vitamin family gives you energy. Vitamin E is important for healthy blood vessels and strengthens the immune system. Each serving of these delicious fruity chews provides at least 100% of kids’ Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamins A, C, D3, E, B6, B12, folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid and zinc.

Probiotic Power Probiotics are microscopic bacteria that live in all humans and help us with our digestion. These friendly “bugs” help break down food for energy and help our bodies absorb nutrients from food. Taking extra probiotics can help with digestion and strengthen your immune system against harmful invaders. Each tasty chewable tablet has 1 billion friendly cultures from 11 strains of beneficial bacteria.

Keep these in the freezer. They last longer.

Page 4: SUNSHINE HORIZONS Jul2010

Calcium Plus D3 The mineral calcium helps bones and teeth grow strong and stay healthy. Bones grow and develop until age 18–21 or so. Most kids or teens get calcium from milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products. But, depending on what you eat or drink, you may not get enough to really benefit your body. Each serving of Sunshine Heroes Calcium Plus D3 provides 300 mg of calcium—that’s the same as drinking 8 oz. of milk. It also provides phosphorus and vitamin D3, which work closely with calcium to build strong bones and teeth.

Omega 3 with DHA Brain power—it’s what helps you think and remember and be smart. Feed your brain good stuff, including something called essential fatty acids. DHA and EPA are special nutrients—called omega-3 fatty acids—that help the brain and body grow and develop properly. These nutrients are especially important for kids and teenagers. DHA and EPA usually come from fish that live deep in the ocean. But Sunshine Heroes Omega 3 with DHA gives you the nutrients you need without any fishing trips! And they’re delicious! Each fish-shaped soft chew serving provides 100 mg DHA and 20 mg EPA.

Whole Foods Papayazyme Enzymes break food down into smaller chunks so our bodies can digest them and grab the nutrients that we need to be healthy and strong. Enzymes are mostly found in fresh fruits and vegetables. We took papaya and pineapple fruits—which have enzymes that help break down meat—and added other enzymes to this formula. Whole Foods Papayazyme helps you digest food and supports intestinal function. It may also help strengthen the immune system. Chew 1 tablet before (or after) meals when you need help with digestion.

Whole Foods Antioxidant Everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are good for our bodies. They contain all kinds of nutrients like vitamins and minerals, plus fiber, and colorful parts that have things called antioxidants. As our bodies get older and we go through life, we get oxidized. Kind of the same way a car gets rusty, the tiny cells that make up our bodies get a little beat up from pollution, sunlight and just normal living. This oxidation process can lead to weakness. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables helps offset oxidative damage because these colorful foods contain lots of antioxidants that help fix or prevent damage. Sunshine Heroes Whole Foods Antioxidant offers the antioxidant power equivalent to two average servings of fruit or vegetables. It also provides vitamins E and C for extra antioxidant protection and nutritional support to help minimize cellular damage.

The National Cancer Institute recommends eating at least 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Parents, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines for vitamin D3. Is your child getting enough?

Nature’s Sweet LifeSweetness without Sugar

Kids in America eat more than 20 teaspoons of sugar a day

on average. Though it tastes sweet, sugar is bad for teeth and can suppress the immune system. Sugary foods can also lead to weight gain. Life can be sweet, even without the extra sugar. Nature’s Sweet Life sugar-free treats contain xylitol. Xylitol looks and tastes like sugar, but it has 40% fewer calories. And xylitol promotes dental health by preventing bacteria from sticking to your teeth.

Nature’s Sweet Life Chocolate Bars Recent studies have shown that chocolate can actually be a healthy snack. But it has to be the right

kind of chocolate. Nature’s Sweet Life chocolate is the right kind: dark, sugar-free and packed with antioxidants. Available in Cardio Raspberry Dark Chocolate or Dark Chocolate 55% Cacao.

Nature’s Sweet Life Gum Did you know that chewing gum after a meal can help keep your teeth healthy? It stimulates the production of saliva, which washes the teeth and neutralizes harmful acid produced by bacteria. So, chew away. Nature’s Sweet Life Gum with xylitol is available in Cinnamon, Peppermint, Spearmint and Green Tea.

Nature’s Sweet Life Mints Nature’s Sweet Life mints taste great, freshen breath and promote a healthy mouth. Like all Nature’s Sweet Life products, they’re great for kids too. Pack a few of these into your child’s backpack to keep him confident and smiling all day. Available in Berry, Lemon and Peppermint.

Nature’s Sweet Life Xylitol Bulk Get the health benefits of xylitol every day with Xylitol Bulk. Xylitol can be used to sweeten foods and beverages or in baking and cooking. (Not recommended for pastries or hard candy.)

Did You Know? All about Animal Nutrition Just like humans, animals need to eat nutritious foods to stay healthy and fuel their bodies. But different animals eat different things. Some eat plants, others eat meat, some even eat dirt!

Herbivores Herbivores eat only plants. Most herbivores eat many different plants and lots of parts of the plant. Others eat a more limited diet. The seed is one of the most nutritious parts of a plant. Leaves and stems aren’t nearly as nutritious, consequently animals that eat mostly leaves must spend a lot of time grazing to get the nutrients they need. Herbivores range from small insects, such as bees and grasshoppers, to very large animals like buffalo.

Carnivores Carnivores eat other animals. They need protein-rich foods, like meat, because they expend a lot of energy in hunting other animals. Some carnivores are picky eaters. For example, an anteater eats only one type of animal. Can you guess which one? On the other hand, bald eagles will eat just about anything, from road kill, to fresh fish, to food found in city dumps.

Omnivores Omnivores have the most varied diet. They eat both plants and animals. A grizzly bear, for instance, hunts and fishes for meat, but he will also eat insects, berries and grass. Other omnivores include raccoons and opossums. Most humans are also omnivores.

Some animals eat dirt. Sounds gross, but parrots and many hoofed animals, such as deer and elk, lick up mineral-rich dirt at locations called licks. In fact, deer hunters often build mineral licks to attract deer.

Cows, sheep, giraffes and camels eat their food twice. That’s because their diet is made up of grass and leaves, which are hard to digest. To get the nutrients they need, they have four stomachs. After a cow swallows its food, the stomachs work to break down the grass. Then it gets regurgitated for more chewing and digesting.

Butterflies have been

seen sucking on sneakers. They like

the salt and nitrogen found in human

sweat.

Bees do good while they eat. While sucking nectar from flowers, a bee’s body becomes covered with pollen. As the bee moves from flower to flower, it spreads the pollen, which is

vital for flower reproduction. Pollinated flowers lead to fruits and vegetables for us to eat!

July/August 2010, Sunshine Horizons 5

Wild panda bears

eat only bamboo. Because bamboo

is low in nutrients, pandas spend up to

half their day eating.

Learn more about the Little Heroes Foundation at www.littleheroesfoundation.org.

The Little Heroes Foundation was created by former NBA player Travis Hansen and his wife to help less fortunate children all over the world live healthier, happier lives. Their work has touched the lives of children in many countries and here at home. Nature’s Sunshine is proud to be a partner with Little Heroes. Part of the sale of every bottle of our Sunshine Heroes products goes to the Little Heroes Foundation to help kids. Here’s what Little Heroes has been working on recently.

Lyubertsy, Russia. Little Heroes helped renovate and refurbish a children’s hospital that serves orphans and children with critical health issues. During the first phase of the project, they renovated two floors, 10 bedrooms, four bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining hall, a mother’s room, two nursing stations and a children’s playroom/library. We are now restoring three more floors, including another dining hall and kitchen, and a new medical laboratory. Little Heroes purchased two respiratory machines, two injection machines, lots of needed supplies, plus cribs, beds, tables, chairs, mobiles and blankets.

Mali. Little Heroes partnered with the Mali Rising Foundation (MRF) to build schools in Africa. Last year, they finished building a three-room school that serves 125 kids. MRF builds schools in the rural areas of Mali and West Africa so children can go to school in their own villages. The villagers must raise $10,000 to build each school. MRF pays the remaining $40,000 needed and provides the villagers with a press to make bricks to build the school. They also bring doctors, dentists and volunteers to Mali twice a year to treat people in these rural parts of Africa.

Ghana. Little Heroes works with Nature’s Sunshine to help the people in West Africa who are suffering due to inadequate immune systems. Every year millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa are plagued with disease because they lack adequate immune system support. Little Heroes distributes Silver Shield, an NSP product that has been used by thousands of people and proven to promote immune system function.

United States. Little Heroes supports the Children with Cancer Christmas Foundation. This group collects presents and has parties for kids dealing with cancer and their families.

Haiti. Little Heroes recently sent over $60,000 worth of NSP supplements to the people of Haiti to help with the relief effort after a massive earthquake struck in January.

When you reach a goal like National Manager, you never reach it alone. You reach it as a team. “I thank God for the privilege of being able to work with wonderful, hard-working, focused distributors and managers. They are the best!
