More than 4 million people have discovered the benefits of this proven learning formula. What are you

waiting for? Joining is easy – just a few simple steps:

Step 1:

Visit a Toastmasters club. You can find clubs near you by using the Meeting Locations tool.

Each group has a different personality, so you may wish to visit more than one. Your visit is free, and some clubs

may allow you to return as often as you like.

It’s easy to find a time and location that works for you. Meetings are held seven days a week, mornings,

afternoons and evenings. It’s a good idea to call or email in advance to confirm a group’s meeting time and

location.

Step 2:

At the meeting, ask the vice president membership for a membership application and fill it out.

Step 3:

Give your application and dues to the vice president membership at the club.

Once you are voted in by the existing membership, the club officer will send your application and fees to

Toastmasters’ World Headquarters.

Your New Member Kit should arrive in the mail in about two weeks (kits outside of the U.S. may take longer).

A Toastmaster's Promise

As a member of Toastmasters International and my club, I promise...

1. To attend club meetings regularly

2. To prepare all of my speech and leadership projects to the best of my ability, basing them on projects in

the Competent Communication, Advanced Communication or Competent Leadership manuals

3. To prepare for and fulfill meeting assignments

4. To provide fellow members with helpful, constructive evaluations

5. To help the club maintain the positive, friendly environment necessary for all members to learn and

grow

6. To serve my club as an officer when called upon to do so

7. To treat my fellow club members and our guests with respect and courtesy

8. To bring guests to club meetings so they can see the benefits Toastmasters membership offers

9. To adhere to the guidelines and rules for all Toastmasters educational and recognition programs

10. To maintain honest and highly ethical standards during the conduct of all Toastmasters activities

Staying focused

Ever wondered why some people reach greater heights even though they

seem to have the same capabilities and background? One important reason is

the fact that they stay focused & pursue their goals. In mathematics that

shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Similarly in life if one

wishes to achieve something one has to pursue that goal and avoid the natural

distractions. The attention span of most people is now less than 2 minutes.

Earlier people used to do one job at a time and do it well. These days even

people on two wheelers drive and talk on the mobile at the same time. New

technologies have made our life simpler but at the same time reduced our

ability to stay focused.

One way that helps me stay focused on my goal is to announce my intention to

people near to me. I have also experienced that unless I sign up for a speech

my speech never gets ready. This works because most people generally value

the commitments given to others in public than commitments made to oneself.

People around you will help you stay focused. Hope this works for you. I wish you all the best for the New Year.

It‟s an honor to work and serve for Sunshine toastmasters, a Presidential

Distinguished Club for the past 5+ years which has produced many international

champions.

When we join Toastmasters, we join it with a desire of improving our speaking

skills. Little do we know that for many it has changed the lives whether it is in the

way of helping someone to achieve or the change in our quality of life.

We now enjoy an excellent combination of members with various levels of

experience and expertise.

I have discovered over these last few months our members are readily willing to

adopt new practices and foster new ideas, allowing the club to further improve

our meetings

As the incoming President I look forward with expectations of a mutually

supportive relationship with all the members. A leader is only as good as those whom he leads. Leadership is a

reflection of a professional relationship between the leader and its members. Let us all develop our potentials to

the fullest through Sunshine Toastmasters. I look forward to another year of growth and evolution in 2012.

My Journey in Toastmasters

It gives me great pleasure to pen about my journey as a Toastmaster at Sunshine

TM Club.

It was in April 2010, that I entered the steps of Banjara Academy. It was the Past

Dist. Gov., M. Venkat who requested me to join for a special meeting on a

Thursday. Sunshine TM was honoring the past president Lakshmi for her

contributions and she was relocating to Chennai. I only stayed for the main

program and did not join for the dinner. I joined the club in May 2010 as a

Toastmaster.

I was inducted along with 2 others (Chetan – still climbing mountains, I suppose

& Ullas – carrying on the legacy of Beechi!!). It reminded me of the occasion

when I joined as a Scout. The tradition or the convention as we call carries huge

importance when we induct new members. It was the warmth of the club

members and the liveliness made me ground firmly into this club.

In July 2010, we had the installation of the new committee and I gladly took the role of a MC. That was my

experiment with Truth. I was a joint VP PR for the term Jul to Dec 2010 and we also had the privilege to release

the newsletter after a considerable period of time. I was overjoyed with the empowerment given by the then

President Jose. I also completed the CC projects by end Dec 2010.

It was time to step up the gas and I found an able colleague, Santosh who encouraged me to take up the role

of VP Education. Santosh & I formed a good team to run the club. I was away to Europe for about a month and

hence did not do much for the contest season in Feb 2011. Few of our club members had also the opportunity

to contribute to Ovation 2011. The Sunday meetings at Jain College under the Chairmanship of Kumaran &

Ramesh were a real treat to watch! Ovation 2011 was a great spectacle and a magnificent event to watch &

learn. Though, we achieved the DCP points, we did not get the Golden Gavel.

In July 2011, I took over as the President of this club. That was a high point in my life. I have never been a

President in my professional life. I am not sure if I can become one in the future. But, I will boast to my fellow

professional colleagues about this achievement. The term Jul to Dec 2011 also had its share of highs and lows.

We celebrated the 600th club meeting in Sept 2011. Our founder President Kadri gave a wonderful education

session on „Evaluation‟.

During Nov & Dec the sessions were very interesting. The mood was upbeat due to the club Creative meetings,

well mentored speeches, higher attendance, more guests, and excellent evaluations. Thanks to the efforts and

co-operation of all the members and during the previous month we have seen a major turnaround in the

meeting attendance and guest turnout. Let us maintain the same tempo in the coming months.

The contest season is weeks away and let us put up a good show and strive to have a Sunshiner as a winner.

That was the goal which we embarked upon in Jul 2011. Let us Arise, Awake and Stop not till the goal is

reached!!

Warm Regards

Strive to be better everyday

In today‟s modern, competitive and ever demanding world certain amount of

improvement is necessary to keep up with the rapid pace of change. We have to

constantly improve many of our skills to keep ourselves in tune with the changes to

survive. Improving is therefore necessary simply to survive.

The question here is Do you just want to improve or you want to be an achiever?

To be achiever‟s you need a dedicated approach to improve.

Achievers – whether in business, sports, or the communication – are committed to

continual improvement. Committed to learn something new every day and get

little better every day. You will feel the self confidence and your self esteem soar.

If you want to be more successful, you need to learn to ask yourself,

How can I/we make this better? How can I/we do it more efficiently?

We have joined Toastmasters knowing fully that communication is the key to success. Every book that you read,

every experience you have at Toastmasters is another building-block in your career and life. To be a master it

takes time. You have to practice, practice, and practice. Use every opportunity to hone your skill and be ready

when your big break comes.

SUNSHINE Toastmasters club is committed to make the Toastmasters program successful by bringing in better

learning through continual Educational and Membership programs.

Together let us support, help and wish the new committee to rediscover the finesse; approach and style which

were the hall mark of Sunshine and make our club the best club.

TMI - True Miracle Institute I am one of those people who stick on to one place, Job or entity. I have stayed

on in Sunshine wherever it moved. In fact I travelled every Thursday, well into an

hour to Sunshine and be the last to leave ,after our rounds of „ motor mouthing ‟

and take another hour to reach home. It never occurred to me to move on to

another place closer to work or home.

Last year, work load and the responsibility of Chairing Ovation got on to me. I

found it very difficult to squeeze in another two hours on Thursday. Even though

this problem existed beforehand, I preferred to ignore the same. One day I

summoned up courage and informed the members of my decision. It was more

painful to me than it was to him.

Here was a club, of which I was a founder member and had seen its growth with

fierce pride and affection. Reluctantly I moved on to daffodils, maintaining my membership at Sunshine. I do

visit the club now and then and am in constant touch with the members.

Last month as we travelled to Mangalore Toastmasters from Sunshine, Daffodils, LA1924, Bangalore

Toastmasters, Mecon and IBM Toastmasters Club travelled as a big group. Everybody bonded very well. It

looked as if they suddenly seemed to know each other for years. On return to Bangalore, the parting at the

station seemed like Yash Chopra‟s love story.

Herein lay a lesson for me. You can integrate people, and their love, if you move on.

To me, as I moved on, the love and affection multiplied into two clubs. I know more Toastmasters at close

quarters and I am able to serve more Toastmasters. Would all this thought, and want to help attitude happen, if

I had not joined Toastmasters. Definitely not.

To the Noble soul (Kadri) who introduced me to Toastmasters and thanks to all of you who feel I am capable of

helping you, thanks for that recognition.

Some debts it is said cannot written off. The learning, love and affection are debts which I want to remain

always with me. As I said in one of my previous jottings, TMI is really a True Miracle Institute.

Shall we play?

November 12th 2011, I came home at 5 pm with six tickets for recently released

movie. My Friend Mr Pramod, who is staying very close to my home, has agreed

a week back to join me for same movie. When I called him to inform that I got

tickets, he hasn‟t taken my call. Then I have cancelled my movie plan and I

was completely upset. I didn‟t call him later and maintained distance for few

weeks.

Last weekend, I asked my 13 years old son Thrivikram “What are you guys to do

this weekend?” Thrivikram replied “Playing Cricket”. Next morning I called all

children and my friend Promod for playing cricket match at GKVK play Ground.

Oh my god!! We had a terrific fun, hitting the ball across the ground and

missing few catches, heated arguments. At the end of the play I understood

my friend Pramod didn‟t take my phone all month back, due to sudden trip to

native place to attend his uncle‟s funeral. We both got reconnected, thanks to

my son and Cricket play.

Dear friends,

Just recollect how many times we broke our relations for silly reasons? I request you all to consider life as a play,

simply look at children and learn how fast they get reconnected after every argument due to different games

they play regularly.

What would your life look like if there was more play?

What would your experience of your work, if you had more fun while performing your job or more playfulness

when you give your project speech in our Toastmasters club?

What would your relationships look like with more spontaneity, laughter, festivity and youthfulness?

As adults we stop playing once we assume responsibility of life.

Adults are nothing more than deteriorated children.

If you want to revive your business, relationships and a journey of toastmasters, just take your kid as a role

model, create some time to join him for a play. When you play consistently, it will help you to be more creative

to prepare variety of speeches and you may become more generous to get back to old good days to

reconnect with all your old friends.

Next time when we are setting out to a business meet with your brief case, and serious face and your kid may

ran across drawing room and ask “Pappa what is a plan for this weekend?”

I invite you to spontaneously reply “We are going out to play”

Shall We Play?

Three Steps to successfully upload videos in Youtube.

Ever wondered what it is the process followed to upload the videos of the club

meeting to youtube? Here is a short description of the various steps involved in

getting the videos upload to youtube.

Step 1 : Edit

The full length video is split into parts according to the start time and the end time

of each speaker. Any video splitting software can be used. The one which I use is

Boilsoft Video Splitter.

Step 2 : Convert

The edited video will be of large size. Hence it is tedious to upload the same video file in Youtube. Convert the

edited video to a suitable format which reduces the size of the file drastically without much compromising on

the quality and resolution of the video. Any Video converter can be used. I use I-POD Converter.

Step 3 : Upload

Log on to Youtube account, upload the converted video and add appropriate title to each video. Create a

new playlist for a particular meeting (Eg: 22_Dec_2011). Add all the videos of that particular meeting to the

playlist created. The URL of the playlist should be sent to all the toastmasters to view videos of a particular club

meeting.

It will take 3 hours to Edit, Convert and Upload the videos of one club meeting.

Toastmaster at Heart

Learning in toastmaster is like taking homeopathic medicine - small does, sweet

and slow which works in the long run. You continue to come to the meetings

and before you know, you lose your „stage fears‟. Your legs stop shaking. Your

communication improves. You become more humorous and less annoying.

Few days ago I went to my son‟s school for “parent‟s day” celebration. After a

long wait, 'School Head' came. He held the mike and gave a very boring

address. Like a good general evaluator, I noted down, “lack of enthusiasm”.

School head introduced the next speaker. A LKG female teacher came with a

prepared speech. Among all the couples, mothers found her sari pretty and

fathers found her pretty. Guess what….. The only thing I found was her nervous

face and shaky body language.

She wished us, “Good Evening Parents”. I was the only one to respond, with a loud and firm voice “GOOD

EVENING!” All the parents around me and my husband stared at me. I asked, “What‟s wrong?” My husband

whispered in my ear, “You are not at toastmasters meeting! control your emotions.” I faced the harsh reality.

There after I tried my best to be just a regular passive, uninterested, bored and non-responding parent.

Although when you are a toastmaster at heart it‟s very hard to be that way.

The speaker started the speech and I stared evaluating her body language, eye contact, voice modulation,

stage usage, flow of speech and pronunciation. I also noted her long pauses, short pauses, aahs, grammatical

mistakes and repetitive words. It was a tough job being the aah counter, grammarian, listener and evaluator all

at the same time.

Toastmaster helped me becoming a better speaker and improved listener. Today I am very proud to say, “Yes, I

am a toastmaster!!!”

New Year resolutions Life‟s leanings or unlearnings are a measure of the impact of experiences. As we

go through life, a topic or subject or thought, undergoes transformations. These

transformations are based on the positive or negative impact of the experience

gained on that topic or subject or thought.

One such thought that has evolved as I have grown is the „New Year

Resolution‟. As a child I never knew what it was – complete ignorance. Life was

very slow then and I did not hear people around me speak of it either.

Then as I walked into youth, friends and college mates brought up this thought –

what‟s your New Year resolution. As I look back at those days, I guess I did not

take it too seriously then. It just seemed to me like something that did not

matter.

Working life changed quite a bit of that. The pressures of earning, standing on

your own feet and meeting life‟s expenses, suddenly made me realize the importance of the New Year

Resolution. I made a few of my own resolutions on saving money, working harder, achieving targets, etc. and

they seemed to stick for the first few months of the year.

Middle age brought in greater pressures and stricter resolutions. The resolutions of giving up smoking and

drinking never crossed my mind though, because I never really got into them. Smoking was something I made

up my mind never to do at a very young age, maybe between 10 and 12. If I could call that a resolution, then

that was one for life and the year did not matter.

Now as I grow older and „wiser‟, the „New Year Resolution‟ is for me a back bencher in my mind. It does not

mean anything, it has no significance and it is of zero value – something that is only for initiating conversation or

humour. They now just seem to me like some crazy mind game - of the youth, for the youth and by the youth.

Life has indeed been a great teacher and time has been the platform on which all of my life‟s leanings have

been measured, scrutinized and evaluated. New Year Resolutions are now for me – a-thing-of-the-past.

What is enlightenment ? The eternal question haunting my mind since my childhood is how can I know

God ? No sooner did this question started stirring my mind, my journey started

with a much aggressive pace. The way our masters right from Jagadguru Adi

Sankaracharya to Swamy Vivekananda to Paramahamsa Yogananda guided the

humanity is really path-breaking. All the Vedic lore including Upanishads,

Bhagavadgita which were earlier in Sanskrit are now available in English so that

this generation people like me got so much fillip in understanding what our ancient

Rishis explained about the fundamental aspects of Life , God etc.

In fact my graduation years laid the firm foundation to take a spiritual path.

Under some dramatic circumstances I was exposed to Vivekananda literature

which not only settled my life in terms of material comforts like obtaining a

government job, but also helped me to embark on higher goals of life to do

something to society with all my available means.

If we go deep into our rationale to judge our actions, they are on dualities: Pain

and Pleasure. We indulge in the actions that give us pleasure and retract from those which give us pain. We

have to go beyond this tendency and be service-oriented.

When you are in misery, just watch those who are in more misery and try to help them. By doing so you forget

your own misery and thereby divine endowments are released to end your own. Compassion means

passion on everything equally. Being sensible to problems of all in the world will take you nearer to the

Almighty. In fact enlightenment is not a commodity which you obtain from somewhere. It is well within you

and it could be reached only by ' Self Search'

ABOUT DECISIONS

“If you are reborn, what would you like to change in your life?”

Everyone who answers this question will think of few things that they would like to

change.

Why so?

Because in life we all make decisions. Sometimes we feel happy for making a good

decision and many times we regret for making a bad decision.

Can decisions be good or bad? Decisions are only decisions. There is nothing as good or bad decision.

However all of us are we used to categorizing everything we do in life. Good - bad, beautiful - ugly, intelligent –

dumb, artistic – rude, urban – rural, decent – indecent, faithful-unfaithful…the duality goes on. All these

extreme classifications of duality only results in extreme emotions viz., feeling good or miserable.

But is there a way out? Yes I got a clue from a recent TED talk I heard from Mr. Khurshid Baltiwala. He shared in

his talk that all his decisions were either RIGHT or CONVENIENT!

This was a very insightful stand on decisions. If we slightly change our habit from categorizing things from

positions of extremes, then we can have a balanced approach to life and the resultant emotions.

Especially in case of DECISION MAKING if we categorize our decisions as RIGHT or CONVENIENT, then we

remove the extreme tag of GOOD – BAD.

Every situation demands a decision from each one of us. A RIGHT decision is one which

may not be easy to execute

may be controversial

may or may not bring recognition

May make you stretch yourself beyond limits

may or may not bring people closer to you

may or may not bring the expected result

But RIGHT DECISIONS will give us one thing and that is the satisfaction at a deep level.

On the other hand a CONVENIENT decision is one which

Will be easy to execute

Will not be controversial

Will make you work in your comfort zone

About

Decisions

By TM T.K.Ramesh

Page 15: Sunshine Club Newsletter

Sunshine Toastmasters Club #9713 Toastmasters international District 82

May bring people closer to you

Will bring the result expected by you

But CONVENIENT DECISION will put our life few steps backwards or will make it remain in the same position, but

never move forward in the real sense. Convenient decisions will give us temporary gratification/satisfaction and

when we look back in life, it will give us a sense of regret.

We all make the RIGHT decision when we join Toastmasters. However slowly we move from the RIGHT zone to

CONVENIENT zone. When we commit for a speaking assignment with the VPE and stick to it, we are in the RIGHT

zone. On the other hand when we postpone our speaking assignment then we are in the CONVENIENT zone.

Life or Toastmasters if we practice to take the RIGHT decision, then the answer to the question “If you are

reborn, what would you like to change in your life?” will always be “NOTHING”.

How to implement Sustainability in our meetings?

How Toastmasters clubs can save energy and

reduce waste.

Toastmasters International with the presence in

most parts of the world and its million of members,

concern to environmental is a crucial aspect for

every club.

As members in Toastmasters we can take

advantage of the following ways to reduce waste and make meetings more

sustainable.

Reduce your paper usage say no to printing

It takes hundreds of trees to print paper invitations for our event, so consider using social media and e-mails to

reach our potential attendees, Take advantage of this high-tech world we live in and incorporate links to our

club website, online registration avenues, Smartphone apps, and online updates on your event‟s schedule.

We can cut down the usage of paper by using technology such as PowerPoint or a laptop to display

information on a screen. We can eliminate printed agendas; many clubs across the world are already following

this.

Through this way, members can review information before the meeting and those unable to attend can access

the information. Even for the club newsletter, we can not only save money and resources but reduce the use of

paper by making it available online. That‟s one of the most feasible ways to address the sustainable issue.

Practice recycling.

Take the print-out only if it is necessary, printing on both sides of the page and use recycled paper and

vegetable-based inks if you feel strongly in favor of having printed agendas, announcements or ballots,

consider. And bring – or ask your host venue to provide – recycling bins for paper, metal, plastic and glass. This

way, you can easily recycle any leftover materials at the end of your meeting.

Is a good idea to use any signs “reuse or recycle”. Reduce, Reuse and Rebuy.

Sustainability in our

A new me Every Wednesday after the evening gossip with all my friends, I say goodbye

with the saying that Thursday I can‟t come to meet my friends as I have

Toastmasters‟ meeting. Then the next questions I encounter are why do I

need to learn public speaking now? Is it useful? If yes, where am I using it? It

goes on and on. After my 2 years in Sunshine Toastmasters, all I can say is it is a

new Me I have found in myself. Why should the learning stop after one is

married and has children?. In my opinion we need leadership and

communication skills more at that time only. What makes me go to Sunshine

Toastmasters Club week after week is the wonderful company of Sunshiners. It is

like a family. The interaction with other club members is making this family

bigger and bigger. The enthusiasm at the club helps to have better relations

even at home. The time spent at every meeting is worth it. For me more than

the final destination, it is the journey that matters.

“HAPPY NEW YEAR AND PONGAL TO ALL OF YOU”

It‟s nice to meet you all my dear fellow toastmasters , you were instrumental

in bringing a sea change in my personality. As a speaker , officer and as a

mentor , I have gained an ocean of knowledge. Thanks to Toastmasters, I

have discovered the speaker and writer buried in me. As an officer I have learnt

the true meaning of persuasion , delegation , goal setting and team work.

By mentoring , I have experienced the mutual love , respect and sharing

which laid foundation to lifelong friendships.

Reverbations in Mangalore

We all reached the railway station early morning and found our seats in the train.

Mr. Kumaran had planned it well, all Toastmasters were in the same car. After the

train pulled out of the station and was cruising, welcome snacks and drinks were

served.

Before people began to dose off, Satlaj and Prem started „antakshri‟. Soon T.K.

Ramesh, Kumaran and others joined in and the fun started. As the sun warmed

the fields rolling by outside the competition became heated inside. Roars of

laughter filled the compartment. Even those not participating had smiles on their

faces. Everyone was in a jovial and friendly mood. We had such wonderful time.

I felt this part of the trip alone was worth the effort.

I took out my camera and captured some lovely moments.

The train chugged along with the singing competing in full swing. Every now and then the passing tea and

coffee vendor did brisk business recharging the singer‟s throats.

Before we knew the long journey ended.

By evening we were in our rooms. After dinner strains of music flowed out of Kumaran and Maithili „s room.

They had hooked up their karaoke and Toastmasters were trying out public singing. It went on for a long time.

Young people, girls and guys huddling together and enjoyed great camaraderie. The atmosphere was civil

and friendly. Music was interspersed with jokes and there were things to gulp and munch on. Even a

septuagenarian like me felt rejuvenated. The next night the affair repeated itself.

Ed Tate, winner of the „International Speech Contest‟ gave an extraordinary insight in to “How to Prepare and

Deliver a Winning Speech” the next day. Most people felt learning was worth the money.

Evaluations contest was a lesson on „How to Evaluate‟ and Rajdeep was the „Best Evaluator‟. Real feast was

the „Humorous Speech Contest‟. Every speaker was funny. Rajshekhar „s speech kept people rolling with

laughter from beginning to end and he walked away with the best prize.

To top it all the „Fun Night‟ offered wonderful dinner, drinks and dancing. I heard someone say, “I can‟t

remember when I had so much fun!” I felt the same way.

Hats off to Sunshiners who motivated us to attend and to „Mangalore Toastmasters‟ who organized the

wonderful event.

Toastmasters were so energized, many registered for the next conference on the spot for May 2012 to be held

in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

I did it too. See you there.
