In the 1960s, the pop group, The Byrds, offered its beautiful rendi-tion of the famous Ecclesiastes passage (3:1-8) about time in “Turn, Turn, Turn.” With a style comparable to The Beatles, the original five members of this ensemble popularized a truth about life: “To every-thing (turn, turn, turn), there is a season (turn, turn, turn) ... and a time to every purpose under Heaven … a time to be born and a time to die … a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

This past June, the catchy tune swirled around in my head as it became clear to me that my life was about to turn once again. This time change would require me to leave my life as a seminary professor

and chaplain to reclaim my identity as a parish priest. I recognize and embrace the fact that God has prepared me for a new calling in my vocation as a priest. I welcome the change to be St. Luke's associate priest for Pastoral Care and Parish Life.

In the early days of my ministry as a young seminarian at a Boston church, I occasion-ally visited dying parishioners at one of the local hospitals. After witnessing parishioners languishing between life and death, I soon adopted a ritual to lift my sorrow and troubled spirit. In those days, hospitals allowed visitors to look at newborns in the “maternity ward.” So after each visit of a dying parishioner, I made my way to the maternity ward and looked at the babies. I found myself rejoicing at the sight of beautiful babies, new life as old life was passing away.

In last month's clergy article, Elizabeth also identified the fact that we are in a world that is ever changing. I believe that the turns in my life—the many comings and goings to and from institutions and cities—all prepared me for the work that I have begun in this loving, spiritual community here at St. Luke’s.

As a seminary professor, I taught students about the privilege of offering pastoral care to parishioners in their most difficult moments. And in my most recent experience as a hospi-tal chaplain at the Johnson City, TN Medical Center, I engaged patients in this very manner. Never before had I been drawn so close to the human condition; patients and family mem-bers invited me into their intimate space to cry with them, preach for them and pray over them in their times of trial. I shall never forget the faces of a sullen mother standing over a dying son, a sorrowful, loving husband saying good bye to his wife of 56 years and little ones walking through the adjoining children’s hospital receiving treats from my colleagues and me on Halloween. I will always remember that when the cold veil of a patient’s death darkened my world, like the sunrise of a new day, the piped-in lullaby heard throughout the hospital after a newborn’s birth lifted my spirit, reassuring me of the sacred promise: a time to be born after death, a beginning after an ending.

So as I begin this new journey as one of your priests, I am grateful that you have invited me to journey with you during the turns in your lives. And while life is unpredictable, we can always count on God to be faithful, to be an ever-loving, ever merciful presence in our lives. The Christian story of Jesus’ resurrection is the first and ultimate promise that God will never leave us without new life. Just as I found the newborns in the Boston hospitals a reminder of God’s faithfulness to restore new life, I pray that your times of mourning will eventually lead toward a time of dancing.

The National Vergers Guild is meeting at St. Luke's in October and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will preach at a noontime Eucharist service on Friday, Oct. 13. All are invited, so save the date.

For this special occasion, a dioce-san choir, led by St. Luke's Music Di-rector Arlan Sunnarborg, will provide musical leadership for the service. If you would like to lend your voice, save the date! More details coming soon. This will be the first time since his installation as the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church that Bishop Curry has visited the diocese, and we want to put our best "voices" forward.

No R.S.V.P. required, but if you’re planning to come, please contact Caitlin Dowling, our music associate ([email protected]) so we can know how many copies of the anthem to have! Snacks will be provided!

Everyone keep calm, but it is time to think about joining the St. Luke’s Adult Choir! Choir season is starting this month and if you’ve been wondering about what the choir does/is, or if there is a place for you in the

choir, this is the time to find out! We’re having an Adult Choir Kickoff Party at the home of Allison Evatt and Bob Allin on Friday, September 8 at 6:30 p.m. and you are invited!

If you’re a choir or chorister alumni, a current member, a prospective member, or just a mildly-intrigued parishioner, please plan to join us! The choir meets on Wednesdays from 7:20-8:50 p.m. during the program year, and sings at the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services each week. (You only need to sing at one, but of course we don’t complain if you want to sing both!) Please RSVP to the party from the Sign Up tab on the website. If you have any questions, contact Ar-lan Sunnarborg ([email protected]) or Caitlin Dowling ([email protected]).

Even if you’re on the fence about joining choir, please join us for a wonderful evening of fellowship and fun and let us show you what choir at St. Luke’s is all about!

PASTORAL CARE FORUMS

Hearing & Healing

Parishioners are invited to a conversation with The Rev. Horace Griffin, the new

associate for Pastoral Care and Parish Life, about pastoral care interests and needs at

St. Luke’s. The first of three forums will be held for seniors (70 and older), Sunday,

September 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the Hamilton Room. A light lunch

will be provided. Please RSVP to Horace or Beth (Dan's administrative assistant) so that we can

prepare lunch accordingly. The following Sunday, September 17, will be for young

and middle-aged adults (same format) and the last Sunday, September 24 will be for

youth during their Sunday 2.0 meeting.

All are invited to these

important conversations.

More than words: Bridge Builders are

small groups of people who commit

to meeting regularly for candid and

vulnerable conversations about race re-

lationships, specifically between blacks

and whites, at St. Luke’s. Bridge Builders is excited to expand its offerings

this program year as we continue the important work, self-knowledge and

communal growth. Want to join the conversation? Sign up online by Sep-

tember 15 or contact the Rev. Lauren Holder for more information.

THE BOOK OF ROMANS

Wednesdays at 11 a.m.September 6-November 15

Wednesday Bible Study resumes September 6 with a focus on Paul’s letter to the Romans. We will delve into theology in the making as Paul wrestles with enduring issues: justification and grace, sin and salvation, a vision of unity, and the faithfulness of God—the same issues that believers have contemplated throughout the his-tory of the church. This study of Romans is particularly timely, as we observe the upcoming 500th anniversary of the Reformation, 1517-2017. We will talk about the role that Paul’s letter played in the life of reformer Mar-tin Luther and the events surrounding the Reformation.ALL ARE WELCOME!

Christian Education

Choristers start back THIS month! The Chorister Kick-off Party was a fabulous time and we’re so excited for the ener-gy and growth in this program! In order to get things moving, we need your help. If you have a youth/child interested in Choristers, please make

sure to register from the Sign Up tab on the church website (StLukesAtlanta.org) so that we can have enough RSCM work-books and be ready to start the year running. Make sure you list your email and your phone number in the registration so you don’t miss any communications about Choristers! If you have any questions, please contact Caitlin Dowling, music associate at 404-873-7634 or [email protected].

SUNDAYS:Prep Choir: 5 – 5:45 p.m.

Junior Choristers: 5 – 5:45 p.m.Senior Choristers: 4:15 – 5 p.m.

EVERY 1ST AND 3RD WEDNESDAY:Prep Choir: 5:45 – 6:30 p.m.

Junior Choristers: 5:45 – 6:30 p.m.Senior Choristers: 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

We want to offer choristers more chances to attend rehearsals and more time with each of their choir leaders. We will be singing in church every month at the 9 a.m. service. In order to sing, a cho-rister must have attended 50% of the rehearsals for that month. Since this is our new policy, and we’re switching to the RSCM cur-riculum, this provides more opportunities for everyone to be able to participate! Wednesday evening rehearsals will be preceded by a pizza dinner starting at 5:15 p.m. and going until all the pizza is gone!

SUNDAY MORNING ADULT ED in September

All Our Children Sept. 10, 24 | Kate Kennedy, The Rev. Lauren HolderYou may have noticed the young faces in our park and on the streets around St. Luke’s—faces that know too much trauma and too little classroom experience or support. St. Luke’s has been in deep discernment over the past three years about how to respond to the homeless children among us and the injustice of education inequality that continues to plague our city and nation. On September 10, 24 and October 1, we ask you to join our efforts in a new and bold way. You will not want to miss out on this next chapter. Contact the Rev. Lauren Holder with questions—and mark your calendars for “the next big thing.”

The Sunday PaperSept. 10, 17, 24 |Matt Boyer and Jonathan SerrieA free-flowing discussion about current events, faith and their intersection in our daily lives facilitated by Jonathan Serrie. Our discussions each week will be informed by scripture, national or local news sources. All views, thoughts and opinions are welcomed and encouraged.

BCP 101Sept 17, 24 | The Rev. Elizabeth Shows CaffeyYou see that red prayer book in the pew racks in front of you, but do you know what is in there? This book contains the structure for Holy Eucharist, Baptism and many other of our sacred liturgies. Did you know that there are prayers intended for use at home? This class is a quick romp introducing and re-introducing us all to the Book of Common Prayer.

RESUMESSUNDAY, SEPT. 10

Children’s Chapel is an in-formal worship offering for children 3 years and older at 9 a.m. in the Wilmer Chapel, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month.

Episcopal Youth Community

of St. Luke's

EYC at St. Luke’s gives youth their own space and time within our larger church family to share fellowship, service, fun, and food (and selling Christmas trees, of course). As the church plans its search for a perma-nent leader for our youth programs, a group of parishioners, parents, and youth has been working to develop a program for this fall.

• Sunday, September 10: Join the EYC for the St. Luke’s Cook-Out and Lawn Games — and to explore the ins and outs of an EYC favorite, laser tag.

• Sunday, October 22: Join the EYC for Atlanta United FC’s second-ever soccer game at the new stadium. Please RSVP to Carrie Teegardin at [email protected] as she will purchase group tickets. ** We will need parent chaperones for this event!**
