What is a Conservation Easement?How do they work?

Why would someone be interested in this for their property?

A highly effective tool for conserving wildlife habitat on private lands is the conservation easement. This is a legal agreement in which landowners voluntarily restrict certain development rights on their property through a contractual obligation (conservation easement) that is held by a qualified conservation organization or government agency. Conservation easement restrictions are tailored to the conservation values (wildlife habitat, open space, etc.) and characteristics of a particular property and to the owner’s personal financial needs and conservation goals.

Conservation Strategy Funduses economics and strategic thinking to help conserve natural ecosystems around the globe. Our approach involves helping local conservationists use analytical tools to find smart, efficient solutions to the most urgent environmental problems. We train environmental professionals from the tropics in a focused package of practical skills, and also work with groups directly in the field. Since its creation in 1998, CSF has concentrated on forests and rivers in the tropics, where extraordinarily high levels of biological diversity are found. To maximize the reach and quality of our work, we have involved leading experts and conservation organizations in all of our projects. CSF is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

Four multi-million dollar homes went up in flames in Maltby, Washington, with evidence indicating that an eco-terrorist organization had burned down the buildings, claiming the buildings were not green enough. “Built Green? Nope black!” was spray-painted on a sign with the initials of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), a radical environmentalist group that authorities stated have committed other arsons in the Northwest. “McMansions in RCDs r not green,” was also scrawled in red (RCD stands for rural cluster developments).
