Oremus pro invicem “Let us pray for each other”
Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector
INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY, JANUARY 18-25
For more than 100 years, Christians around the world have observed a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25 this year) heeding the prayer of Christ at the Last Supper “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). The theme this year is “They Show Us Unusual Kindness,” taken from Acts 28:2. With this theme, we are called to pray for and show unusual kindness toward one another by doing what we can as individuals and as a parish to end the separation, division and conflict that are too often the norm. In his 2013 Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii gaudium, Pope Francis wrote: "We must never forget that we are pilgrims journeying alongside one another. This means that we must have sincere trust in our fellow pilgrims, putting aside all suspicion or mistrust, and turn our gaze to what we are all seeking: The radiant peace of God’s face.”
1975 LECTURE SERIES BEGINS JANUARY 21 As part of the celebration of our 225th anniversary as a parish, we are hosting a series of outstanding speakers in a 1795 Lecture Series. Our first lecture will be on Tuesday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. in our Lyceum Auditorium, with Rob-ert Royal, founder and president of the Faith & Reason Institute in Washington, DC. His topic will be “The World and the Church in 1795.” I encourage you to join us for what promises to be an exceptional and informa-tive series of lectures over the coming months. Watch the bulletin and our web-site for more details.
ANNIVERSARY OF ROE v. WADE, JANUARY 22 January 22 is the 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Su-preme Court decision legalizing abortion in this nation. It has been designated as a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. We clearly need to continue to pray for an end to this tragedy. As Saint Teresa of Calcutta warned, “A nation that kills its children in the womb has lost its soul.” Each year for nearly five decades, pro-life advocates from around the nation have marched in Washington, DC, from the National Mall to the steps of the Supreme Court, seeking a reversal of Roe v. Wade. Parishioners of Saint Mary will join the March for Life 2020 on Friday, January 24.
If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for a seat on our free parish bus to the March at https://stmaryoldtown.org/mfl-2020-registration. Join me and your fellow parishioners as we offer faithful witness to the dignity and value of all hu-man life, from the moment of conception to natural death.
Our Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, January 20
in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day There will be one Mass at 9 a.m.

From your Saint Vincent de Paul Society Mary’s Miracles. Tina and Nelson, a couple with six children living in the housing near Braddock Metro Sta-tion, maintain a close, loving family, poor in income but not in spirit. When our Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) volunteers delivered a large Christmas tree to them, the kids’ eyes lit up brighter than the bulbs. We were also able to pay their gas bill to keep the heat on
during the cold winter months. When we help a family like this, we not only see the face of Christ in them, but we also see the future of our great country. When we see this family, we see great hope. Let’s help all families to be rich in spirit with hope for the future even as they struggle to make
ends meet. For more information about how you can sup-port the work of the SVdP or join their work, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].

EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF THE DIVINE MERCY
Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a
trusting soul. (Diary of St. Faustina, 1777) An apostolate of the Marian Fathers of the Immacu-late Conception and under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy use a small group or cenacle format to experi-ence our Catholic Faith. The purpose is to spread the truth of the Real Presence in the Eucharist and live the Divine Mercy message based on a deeper trust in God, a greater ability to forgive and be merciful to others. St. Mary’s Cenacle meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month at 10 a.m. in the Fr. Rankin House, 314 Duke Street. For more information, con-tact Lynne or Harry Dolton at 703.960.0592 or [email protected].
FELLOWSHIP & SERVING OTHERS
FELLOWSHIP FOR DIVORCED, SEPARATED CATHOLICS

PRAYER SUPPORT GROUP There will be a prayer support meeting for adults with mental illness on the first and third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at 316 Duke Street. The event is sponsored by the Labre Community. For more information, contact [email protected].
Looking to take that first step to volunteer for our parish? Consider volunteering for the Sanctuary Soci-ety! It's easy, done in your own home and at your own speed. Most importantly, volunteering for the
Sanctuary Society is a labor of love and a blessing for each member. Once every six weeks or so, each volun-teer picks up altar linens used during Mass, takes them home for laundering (we'll show you how and teach you their names). The laundered linens then are returned to the sacristy.
We would love to have you join us. Just give us a call and let's get started!

GOING TO CONFESSION (As our confessionals undergo renovation this month, let’s look back at their history here in the Basilica.)
In the early 20th century, reception of the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist was the reverse of what it became later: The Confession line was long and the Communion line was short. The old law of abstinence (no food or drink after mid-night) cut down on the number of communicants. In the 1930s, at the last Mass on Sunday at 11 a.m., the priest did not even distribute the Eucharist because there were so few people receiving by that time of the day — they would have had to fast since the previous midnight! Many people would receive the Eucharist on Sunday only if they had gone to Confession on Saturday evening. Thus, the long Confession lines.
In the early years of the parish, there were three confessionals at Saint Mary. Two were located on either side of the main doors on South Royal Street and one was located in the rear of the north wing (transept) by the sacristy. For generations of school children who sang in the choir, the confessional on the north side of the church entrance had a mysteri-ous aspect – a winding staircase from the choir loft that “disappeared”! Probably every youngster for 50 years had crept down these stairs to see where they led, ending up, to their surprise, in the priests’ confessional cubicle. Part of this old confessional was later replaced by the current bathroom.
In 1972, then-pastor Father Joseph L. Wingler oversaw a major renovation of the church, to implement changes mandated by the Vatican and to repair the aging building. The old confessionals were removed and re-placed with a room in the north transept where the penitent could either kneel, in the traditional manner, or sit and talk with the priest. Father Wingler’s renovation eliminated the confessionals at the back of the church. — Kitty Guy, Parish Historian
Confessionals used through the 1960s in the north transept.

NATIONAL MARCH FOR LIFE — January 24 The annual March for Life will be held in Washington, DC, on Friday, January 24. The location is the same as the last two years. The March for Life Rally will take place at noon at 12th Street on the National Mall, between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. Following the rally, the March will begin on Constitution Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets at approximately 1 p.m. Saint Mary's FREE chartered bus will pick up parishioners in front of the church at 11:30 a.m. and return 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sign up at https://stmaryoldtown.org/mfl-2020-registration. If you want to meet us at the March, we plan to gather at the corner of 12th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. Look for our large banner. The Knights of Columbus will provide a warm meal afterward in the parish Lyceum, 313 Duke Street. For additional information about Basilica participation in the March, please contact Melinda Zakrzwski at [email protected] or call 703.624.1684.
WE ARE PRO-LIFE!
A BEST CHOICE MOBILE ULTRASOUND FUND DRIVE The Knights of Columbus of the Basilica of Saint Mary are helping A Best Choice Mobile Ultrasound and Pregnancy Resource Center raise funds to save the unborn by providing a free ultrasound and counseling to women considering an abortion, providing a visual of the unborn baby in hopes the mother elects to give life. Over the last few years, A Best Choice has helped save approximately 100 babies from abortion. To help them continue this work, the Knights implemented the Baby Bottle Boomerang project by distributing baby bottles at Masses last the week-end. The bottles will be collected with your donation at Masses this weekend, January 18/19. (Checks made out to
“A Best Choice” also are welcomed.) Find more information at www.abestchoice.us or contact Angela Clark at [email protected] Many thanks for your consideration and helping sustain the miracle of life. Steve Teslik, Knights of Columbus ([email protected])
2020 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS! During January, a mailing for the 2020 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) is being sent to all regis-tered households in the Diocese of Arlington. The theme for the 2020 BLA is “Steadfast in Faith and Joyful in Hope.” After reflecting upon the blessings God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to support this important annual ap-peal that funds many programs and ministries serving thousands of people in our Diocese. Together, through the BLA, let us renew our personal commitment to furthering the Lord’s work in our community.
