If you or a loved one are admitted to a hospital or nursing home, please let us know so we can get you the proper spiritual care. Because of the HIPAA law, treatment facilities are not permitted to release your information to us unless you or your family give them permission to do so.

“God’s compassion for us is all the more wonderful because Christ died, not for the righteous or the holy but for the wicked and the sinful, and, though the divine nature could not be touched by the sting of death, he took to himself, through his birth as one of us, something he could offer on our behalf…By dying he submitted to the laws of the underworld; by rising again he destroyed them.” (St. Leo the Great)

Congratulations to Mrs. Clynich Caito (SMOS) who celebrated her 100th birthday on February 26!

St. Joseph Day- March 19. Use this prayer as a novena beginning this Tuesday.

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong,

so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all

my interests and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me

by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from

your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus

Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below

your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and

homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I

never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your

arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in

my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask him to return the Kiss when I

draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me.

As the Coronavirus continues to populate news stories, the following information is necessary for parishioners to keep in mind: All Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are instructed to wash their

hands when they arrive at the church. They already use and will continue to use the anti-bacterial solutions on their hands prior to the distribution of the Body of Christ.

The use of the common cup for the Precious Blood will cease at both weekday and weekend Masses for the foreseeable future.

Common sense should govern our interactions if we have a cold or flu. Catholics who are ill are not obliged to attend Mass.

For more information, see the letter from Bishop Zubik on page 18.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

    1. The word of the LORD is faithful, and all his works to be trusted. The LORD loves justice and right, and his merciful love fills the earth.

    2. Yes, the LORD’s eyes are on those who fear him, who hope in his merciful love, to rescue their souls from death, to keep them alive in famine.

    3. Our soul is waiting for the LORD. He is our help and our shield. May your merciful love be upon us, as we hope in you, O LORD.

Text: Psalm 33: The Grail, Conception Abbey © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc. Tune: Michel Guimont

Beloved: Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus

before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

From the shining cloud the Father’s voice is heard: this is my beloved Son, hear Him.

    Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;

listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

    THE ORDER OF MASS

    PROFESSION OF FAITH

    UNIVERSAL PRAYER

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

all bow at the following bolder words and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

    ARING IVING ERVING

“We pilgrims on earth are granted to rejoice in the company of the transfigured Lord when we immerse ourselves in the things of above through prayer and the divine mysteries. But, like the disciples, we too must descend from Tabor into daily life where human events challenge our faith.”

Pope Saint John Paul II, Homily, 8/6/1999

In the Gospel today, we read Matthew’s account of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Jesus takes three of his Apostles up on Mount Tabor and appears to give them a preview of the Resurrection. What the Apostles witness, and the revelation they hear, “This is my beloved Son…Listen to him,” are so important that this event is recounted in all three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). The Transfiguration is also the fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary. In order to apply the message of the Transfiguration to our CGS Grouping in the ON MISSION process, let us analyze the definitions of the word, “Transfiguration” according to Merriam-Webster.com. 1. TRANSFIGURATION:

“A change in form or appearance: metamorphosis” Some external changes are challenging, but we, like the Apostles who have glimpsed the glory of the Risen Christ, need to keep our focus on the good things that come even from pain and sorrow when we trust God’s plan. We are three enduring communities that have experienced remodelings, closings, construction of new facilities, and a few natural disasters in our histories. Initially, these changes and events might have been difficult to accept, but in time, we recognized them as improvements. Over the past year, we have met a new clergy team and noticed different people appearing in the pews of each church with the benefit of new gifts and growth of our community. 2. TRANSFIGURATION: “An exalting, glorifying, or spiritual change” During the Season of Lent, as we grow spiritually through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, remember that we are called, like the Apostles, to come down from the mountain back into the trenches of daily life, and our spiritual gifts are to be shared to help our Parish Grouping grow in unity and charity. As we move toward our January 2021 merger date, may each of us pray for the grace we need to grow in “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another, and forgiving one another (Colossians 3: 12-13).”

To look forward to the Resurrection, to listen to Jesus in prayer, and to extend His love to others through our own sacrifices and acts of charity, are the keys to “transfiguring” ourselves during Lent, and to bringing our soon to be transfigured CGS Grouping closer to the Risen Christ.

PREPARING FOR INFANT BAPTISM Our Catholic Community of Group #210 offers the Baptism Preparation Class for expectant and new parents, along with their chosen godparents. It is a requirement before your child’s Baptism may be scheduled. The March class is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Call 412-857-5356, dial 1, ext. 425 to receive registration information. If you are thinking ahead, please note that there are significant Church guidelines for your choice of Godparents and their responsibilities. Call for any questions you may have.

During the 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Margaret of Scotland this weekend our CGS Community celebrates the Rite of Sending our Catechumens for the Rite of Election, which will take place next Sunday at St. Paul’s Cathedral. We also celebrate Sending our Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop. The catechumens are those to receive the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil; the candidates are those preparing for Confirmation and Eucharist also during the Vigil. Next Sunday during the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton we begin the Scrutinies. These Rites take place on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent for those to be baptized. They are for the Catechumens to seek new life in Christ through a prayer of exorcism, the church’s blessing and our petitions. We are also reminded each week to be involved in our own soul-searching and repentance by reflecting on our sinfulness and the experience of the forgiving mercy of God. The catechumens make and we renew our commitment to Christ through this First Scrutiny of the Rites of Christian Initiation. The following week the Second Scrutiny will be during the 11:00 a.m. Mass at Ss. Simon & Jude; the Third Scrutiny at St. Margaret of Scotland. We are reminded to continue our prayer for our Catechumens, Candidates and ourselves.

Thousands sought Jesus during his life. Only a few followed him to Calvary.

    What will you do?

No Greater Love, A Biblical Walk through Christ’s Passion We often hear about Jesus’ Passion and death in the Gospels, the Rosary, the Mass, the Stations of the Cross, and many other devotions. Because we hear about Christ’s Passion so often, it’s easy for us to lose sight of its profound significance. But imagine if you had never heard these stories before. Imagine experiencing them for the very first time, and realizing that Jesus is a real person who really suffered and died for you and for me so that we can have eternal life.

No Greater Love is a five-part DVD based Bible study program, presented by Fr. Grecco and Sharon Smoller, which runs Thursdays, March 5, - April 2, 2020 at Ss. Simon & Jude church hall from 6:45-8:15 pm. The fee is $25 per person which is necessary to cover the cost of 2 books needed for this study; scholarships are available if you cannot afford the cost; please contact Sharon. For more information or to register, contact Sharon Smoller at 412-857-5356 or [email protected]. It’s not too late to join us!

Another class offering of No Greater Love, A Biblical Walk through Christ’s Passion, will take place on Monday afternoons and will run from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., from March 9 –April 6, 2020, in the St. Margaret of Scotland Parish Office. It will be presented by Karen Maurer. The fee is the same. To register for this class or for further information, contact Karen at 412-857-5356 or [email protected].

THE WORD “During the 40 days of Lent, as Christians we are invited to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and face the spiritual battle with the Evil One with the strength of the Word of God, which has the power to defeat Satan. For this reason, it is important to be familiar with the Bible: read it often, meditate on it, assimilate it. The Bible contains the Word of God, which is always timely and effective.” — Pope Francis, edited by Steve Mueller Join fellow parishioners during Lent for Lectio Divina and/or Liturgy of the Word! Check the Weekly Parish Schedule on page four of this bulletin to find the many options available in all three of our churches.

"If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, your life should look different than everyone else's." — Jackie Francois Angel (Speaker, Worship Leader, Author) Our beautiful Lenten Season gives us many ‘extra’ opportunities to have our lives ‘looking different’. Let’s be ready to tell those who look askance as to why we • have ashes on our forehead, • are going to Church twice on Sunday - once for Mass, and then later for Holy Hour and Vespers; • are going to the Church during weekdays for extra Masses, Lectio Divina, Marian Consecration sessions,

Liturgy of the Hours, Stations of the Cross, and No Greater Love dvd programs; • work fish frys; • eat at fish frys; • fast between meals and abstain from meat. Aren’t you glad you’re Catholic? Don’t you wish everybody was? “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope...”. --1 Peter 3:15

CONFIRMATION RETREAT DAY Confirmation Retreat Day for 8th grade Candidates in our grouping will be held on Saturday, March 14, at Ss. Simon & Jude church hall from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The day will be spent reflecting on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we use these gifts to bring about the Good News of Jesus Christ to others. The day concludes with 4:00 pm Mass. Please pray for these young men and women as they prepare for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 17, 2020, with the Most Reverend Bishop David A. Zubik, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Margaret of Scotland Church.

TRANSFORMATION STATIONS FOR FAITH FORMATION FAMILIES THIS WEEKEND! Sunday, March 8 Ss. Simon and Jude church hall from 12 p.m.- 1:00 p.m. Gather in the hall immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass to come and reflect on the final moments of Jesus as he was led to Calvary and his death. This is an experience for children of all ages to have an encounter through hands-on stations with reflections. No faith formation classes will be held on Monday, March 9, or Wednesday, March 11.

EVENING FAITH SHARING All are welcome to join us as we study the conversions of Matthew, Jonah, the Woman at the well, and the Magi. Bishop Robert Barron’s video program “Conversion” and discussion will occur at 7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. Tuesdays, March 10, 17, 24, and 31, in the Parish Office Conference Room at St. Margaret of Scotland. Come for any session or all four.

CONFIRMATION FOR ADULT CATHOLICS If you are a high schooler or an adult who has been steadily growing in faith and is a practicing catholic, but has simply missed the opportunity for Confirmation, consider this possibility. Bishop Zubik will be conferring this Sacrament on May 17, for our CGS Grouping. According to Diocesan directives the preparation of adults for Confirmation takes place within the parish group. We are now offering sessions for Confirmation preparation on Saturday afternoons, 3:00 to 4:15 p.m., March 21, 28, April 18 and 25, at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church location. Note that you will need this Sacrament if you are contemplating becoming a godparent or a sponsor in the future. Please call the Office for Initiation (412-857-5356 ext. 425) to register.

    A BIT

    ABOUT

“Vespers traces its roots to some of the oldest Jewish and Christian rituals. Old Testament passages instruct the faithful to greet the evening by lighting lamps ... as a reminder of Christ, the light of the world. Over time, the service became a means of sanctifying the evening hours, in Saint Basil’s words, “with something better than silence.” — Michael Centore, Catholic Writer

Our CGS Community is offering Vespers (Evening Prayer) on Lent Sundays, just after a 4:00 p.m. Holy Hour. Check the bulletin for locations.

THE PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry at St Thomas More will host Project Rachel’s Vineyard facilitator, Toni Jestor, at its monthly meeting on April 2, at 10:00 a.m. in the Rooney Room. Because STM has provided shawls and prayer support for the Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat, Toni will tell us about the retreat which is for women and men struggling in the aftermath of an abortion. "Rachel’s Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild and redeem hearts broken by abortion. The retreat offers a supportive, confidential and nonjudgmental environment where women and men can express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive emotions and begin the process of restoration, renewal and healing." There is more specific information on their website: https://rvofpgh.com Please join us and meet your neighboring parish Prayer Shawl creators. You may call me with any questions.. ST. MARGARET SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our

classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Mrs. Olga Kaiser – Kindergarten Kindergarten started the New Year with making penguins and adding a twist to the project by cheering on our Pittsburgh Penguins. We had fun concluding our project with a Parade of Penguins. We celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun-filled activities. The children came to school dressed as 100 years young, and it was interesting to learn how things have changed. We did many activities counting by 1s, 5s, and 10s to 100, and made food jewelry using 100 colorful fruit loops. The children

have entered the world of reading and they are reading so much. We look forward to Fridays because it is Flashlight Friday. The children share a story with each other by reading with the use of a flashlight. At the conclusion of the story, we gather together to discuss and share favorite parts. We are looking forward to attending the Stations during this Lenten Season, with our buddies, to journey with Jesus in His sufferings.

We would like to Honor 8th grader Madeline Dillon for her excellent trombone performance with the South District Honors Band, which was held on February 15, 2020. To be

selected for this band, she was required to audition along with trombone students from other South District Schools. Because of this audition, she not only made it into the Honors Band, but she has also been chosen for All-Star Band! The All-Star Band Concert will be held at Central Catholic High School on Sunday, April 19, 2020 at 2:30 PM. This band combines the talents of

exceptional band students from the entire Pittsburgh Area of Catholic Schools. It is quite an honor to be selected for this band. Madeline has been playing trombone since 4th grade at St.
