Dear Parish Family,
I recently talked to a group of teens about holiness. I wanted to impress
upon them that holiness is not about perfection or purity, although those
are some qualities of a holy person. Holiness is really about “wholeness” -
to live a holy life is to live a life that is full, healthy, well-rounded, and freely
given to God.
I’ve had the pleasure to spend a lot of time with youth and young adults
this summer on retreats and mission trips. When I watch them pray and
laugh together, focused on community and faithfulness, they glow! They
are filled with the healthy wholeness of a life lived in God’s love. I am so
encouraged by witnessing this lived theology. It is beautifully loud, messy,
and imperfect.
As children of God, we are all in the process of growing up into our own
holiness. Like children, we make mistakes… we hurt each other, try new
things, get scared, rebel, and run away. But try to trust that this is part of
the process, and that this process is never complete until we are
completely held in the loving hands of God.
Hangouts are on hiatus for the summer, but we
will continue to get together for fun events -
stay connected by checking out our messages
at www.standrew.org/gather/meet-other-young-
adults/
Upcoming Events:
Get to know our neighbors at Saint Benedict on
Sunday, August 18th at their Young Adult Wine
and Cheese night following 6:30pm mass. And
save the date for our Hangout Kick-off - Sept 8!
Teens in grades 8-12 are encouraged to gather
with our Youth Group in the Social Hall on the
first and third Sundays of the month. Join us for
fun, friendship and faith.

To Support Saint Andrew Through E-Giving.
This week ends our E-Giving Prime Week at Saint Andrew.
The Stewardship Commission at Saint Andrew has a goal this
week for Saint Andrew to sign up 25 parishioners to make their
regular Sunday offering through Give Central (E-giving).
The first 25 household or individuals who sign up for E-
giving for the first time between August 11 and August 18
will receive a $10 gift certificate to see the movie of their
choice at any Regal Cinema Movie Theater.
Help us during our E-Giving Prime Week to meet our goal.
E-giving helps us to maintain regular support for our parish
ministries, particularly in the weeks and weekends when many
parishioners travel and are out of town. Thank you for your
support, and if you are looking for a reason to switch over to E-
giving, this is it!

Do you remember back at Christmas
when we were singing anthems
about the “Prince of Peace?” How
about Mass? Do you recall the
frequency with which we respond to
the greeting “The Peace of the Lord
be always with you?” What is your
general impression of Christianity?
Do you often hear prayers which call
for “Peace between all people?”
Peace seems to be a rather large
focus in our religious tradition which
is why it is rather clunky for us to
read today’s Gospel from the Gospel
of Luke in which Jesus says, “Did
you think that I came to bring peace
on the Earth? No, I tell you, but
rather division.” (Luke 12:51)
A couple of big takeaways from this
quite dissonant excerpt. First of all, it
demonstrates why it is dangerous to
“proof texting” scripture. Proof texting
is the practice of finding a short
quote from the Bible, take it out its
context, and apply it to whatever
argument suits an individual’s
perspective and need. Scripture must
always be understood within the
context of its written time period,
style of writing, intention of the
author, and intention within the
passage.
Secondly, this except demonstrates
shows the limitations of words in
general. You know the one, the
difficulty that there are 100 words for
snow to the Eskimos, but only one
word in English.
The word for “peace” in Greek is
“eirēnē” which might also be
translated as tranquility, stillness,
quiet, safety, or yes… peace. The
word has multiple meanings and
influences depending on how it is
used. A good example of how this
plays in out English is the word
“love.” We use one word to describe
multiple events. There is romantic
love, the love of friends, the love
family, and the love of God. All are
love, but they are different and we
don’t have words to easily distinguish
the difference between them in our
language. The same is true of “eirēnē.” It
means “peace” but also several other
concepts depending on the context. I
think that when we read the Gospel
of Luke, the intention that Jesus has
is better translated, “Did you think I
came to keep the status quo?” That
is contextually a better fit for Jesus’
overall message. He did come for
peace, but not a tepid tranquility
resulting from a lack of courage to
fight injustice. In our own day, it can
be tempting to try to “keep the
peace” while allowing for sexism,
racism, and radical inequality to
prevail. This isn’t peace but rather
the illusion of peace. Jesus was
willing to disrupt the social order to
bring about a greater peace and he
invites his followers to do the same.
At every stage of life, we engage our members to learn. From our Blue-Ribbon school to our K-8
Religious Education program, preparation for Marriage and Baptism to opportunities for young adults and
parents, we are dedicated to fostering deeper knowledge of God and self as we grow step by step.

The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be
protected and a healthy community can be achieved only
if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.
Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life
and a right to those things required for human decency.
Corresponding to these rights are duties and
responsibilities--to one another, to our families, and to the
larger society.
We look to scripture to find instruction on how we can take
responsibility in order to protect the rights of the
vulnerable. This is a great way to incorporate prayer and
social justice conversations.
Take out your bible and see if you can draw the same
conclusions from these readings. You might do this on
your own, or with family and friends, as a way of sparking
important conversations about our personal and
communal responsibilities.
Leviticus 25:35
When someone is reduced to poverty, we have an
obligation to help.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Open your mouth to speak on behalf of those in need.
Acts 4: 32-35
There was not a needy person among them.
2 Corinthians 9:6-15
God’s gifts are given to be shared.

Catholic Social Teaching)
The Facilities and Construction Committee and the Capital Campaign
Committee have been meeting throughout the summer to advance work
toward the new school addition.
We reviewed new and past schemes in order to have a comprehensive look
at the entire campus. We completed site walk-throughs and reviewed a
campus assessment provided by the architects. We are currently finalizing
the schematic design pricing package prepared by the architects based on
scope of work outlined earlier by this committee.
The committees are specifically defining programmatic goals for the architects in consultation with school
administration and faculty. We continue to define the scope, timeline, and budget of the school addition
project and have made recommendations for general phasing plans that impact the expansion design.
Preliminary estimates from contractors to advise phasing are underway in conjunction with code and zoning
analysis.
Once we receive the estimates, our next step will be to meet with the school administration and constituents,
project architects & engineers, fire marshal, contractors, etc. as well as, Father Romo to move toward
proposing final designs in order to bring it into the initial stages of the construction phase.
Thank you for your continued support with this exciting endeavor!

What about the overall campaign?
You may have read in the Chicago Tribune recently that the overarching To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign
was not reaching its goals. The article can be found online on the Chicago Tribune Webpage. We have
included in our own Saint Andrew webpage the response of the Archdiocese to the article.
We would also like to share with you how the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign effects our campaign at
Saint Andrew. In the three years of our campaign, we have regularly met our financial goals toward the To
Teach Who Christ is campaign which was $250,000 in a promissory obligation. We make an annual
contribution to this campaign and currently have the reserves to meet our obligation for the remaining two
years. That means that any money that is gifted towards Saint Andrew parish in the Enrich, Expand, Grow
Campaign will be used for the remaining goals of our campaign. The health of our campaign means that we
are neither defaulting on our obligations nor subsidizing obligations of others. We are grateful for our
generous donors who have continued to keep the Enrich, Expand, Grow Campaign a successful and exciting
venture for our community
Our mission is fulfilled when we enter the world and in the presence of our friends, our co-workers, and
especially our families, we are more capable of loving one another, as we have been loved.
Saint Andrew Parish celebrates the First Friday of every month
with a holy hour Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament in the
Saint Andrew chapel.
Come on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 6:30pm. The time of
prayer begins with Mass, Benediction, and an hour of prayer
before the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us!
Congratulations to the young people from our parish who lead
and participated in the North Side Kairos Retreat this past
weekend, August 9-12, 2019. Together with 27 other participants,
they had a four day experience of Christian Community that
explored how God’s love has shown through their life and how
they are called to share that love with others by putting their love
into action. We look forward to next year’s Kairos where teens
who are upperclassmen in high school can participate.
Join volunteers from our parish to help end hunger in Chicago
during the 34th Annual Hunger Walk with the Greater Chicago
Food Depository on Saturday, September 7, 2019 starting at
8:30am in Jackson Park. This annual 2-mile walk on Chicago’s
lakefront invites sponsors and over 15,000 walkers to raise
money for the 5.5 million visits to Chicago food pantries that
occur every year. We encourage you to walk and to donate to this
important cause. Find out more at www.chicagosfoodbank.org
Last month 153 households supported Saint
Andrew’s Sunday Offertory through electronic
giving. Our goal by the end of the year is to reach
200 households giving electronically by the end of
the year. Electronic giving helps to normalize our
budget and yours and allows for support of the
parish even when travel and unexpected
circumstances arise.
Please learn more about electronic giving at
www.standrew.org/give
