Gospel Reflection for the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Job Vacancy It’s at this time of year, when the Christmas holiday is well and truly over and it’s time to go back to work, that we wonder what we are really doing with our lives. When we meet the first disciples in today’s gospel, they are wondering pretty much the same thing. Were they going to spend out the rest of their lives catching fish, or were they going to follow Jesus and become ‘fishers of men’? The early disciples were unerring in their discipleship. They left their nets and followed Jesus ‘at once’ …. ‘immediately’. There was no doubt in their minds about how they wanted to live out their lives. Discipleship was a job for life. Jesus’ work is never done and there will always be vacancies for new disciples. Discipleship is something akin to an army. Without active supporters, a cause can grow faint. We are not asked to keep Christ’s teaching to ourselves, we are asked to be ‘fishers of men’ always opening up God’s opportunities to others. The world is a dangerous place full of greed and extremism. There are too many people in the world who feel that money and coercion are the way to get what they want. There are not enough people who believe that love and respect for every human being they meet might be a better answer. We might feel uncomfortable with the idea of being ‘fishers of men’. It conjures the idea of

notching up conversions like some kind of biblical sales person. Today we are asked to sweep

our preconceptions aside. Being a ‘fisher of men’ needs to be about making a real difference in

other people’s lives by demonstrating our discipleship. Discipleship is a job for life.

Homeless Sunday 22nd January 2017 Each year, churches and Christian ministries unite together to mark Homeless Sunday. This is something which has been going in excess of 15 years to enable Christians to pray for those in their own community who are homeless as well as to look at how they can commit to new practical action. To do:- Help those in danger of becoming homeless by donating to charities such as Housing Justice or Shelter, and getting involved in the campaigns they run throughout the year. Help those sleeping rough by donating food and money to local homeless centres and

foodbanks.

The Conversion of Saint Paul 25th January When we are struggling to find change in our lives, we could hardly do better

than look to the story of Saul, the great persecutor of Christians, who saw the

light on the road to Damascus. The story of the conversion of Saul, from the

persecutor of Christians to the zealous and holy instrument of evangelisation,

Paul, shows the strength of God's power in our lives, and how he can change

anything. For each of us there is a job to do. For God, nothing is impossible.

CYMFed FLAME 2017 The above young people’s conference takes place at Wembley Arena on Sat 11th March. This is a day run by young people for young people and is aimed at school year 10+. It takes the form of keynote and inspirational speakers, praise and worship, music and drama. Those students who enjoyed either Flame 2 or Embrace 2015 will be keen to repeat the experience at Flame 2017.
