He is a person filled with the Holy Spirit. In our gospel today, the Spirit makes him return to his home province, Galilee. Be- ing guided by the Spirit at all mes makes him free from sin and totally obedient to the Father. Every now and then, Jesus would go to the synagogue to teach. All people in the syna- gogue praised Jesus for he had acquired a reputaon and they were impressed by his talent. Jesus was also a man of prayer. He oſten prayed by himself. We see him pray here with the community. He was a Jew and he felt part of his people in prayer too. He had received much of this religious educaon in the synagogue and his own teach- ings cannot be understood unless we grasp his religious back- ground as a Jew. Our Sunday mass is similar. We are told at mes that people can pray beer at home. It could be true as far as aenon and devoon are concerned, but it could be a very individualisc prayer to myFather, not to the Father of the Chrisan community. The rich young man no doubt prayed fervently to his Lord, but he did not see God as the Lord of all people, making all of them brothers and sisters. It prevented him from sharing. Our community prayer makes us share the concerns of others, makes us work together as a community. The Eucharist brings the community together around Christ, and the community learns to see Christ in every person.

REFLECTION

St Luke is concerned to tell us that Jesus is no ordinary man. He is a person filled with the Holy Spirit. In our gospel today, the Spirit makes him return to his home province, Galilee. Be-ing guided by the Spirit at all times makes him free from sin and totally obedient to the Father. Every now and then, Jesus would go to the synagogue to teach. All people in the syna-gogue praised Jesus for he had acquired a reputation and they were impressed by his talent. Jesus was also a man of prayer. He often prayed by himself. We see him pray here with the community. He was a Jew and he felt part of his people in prayer too. He had received much of this religious education in the synagogue and his own teach-ings cannot be understood unless we grasp his religious back-ground as a Jew. Our Sunday mass is similar. We are told at times that people can pray better at home. It could be true as far as attention and devotion are concerned, but it could be a very individualistic prayer to “my” Father, not to the Father of the Christian community.

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

This is a week to celebrate and to thank God for His

grace and many blessings. On Wednesday, January

30th, we will be celebrating mass at 8:15 am. We will

be having a special speaker, Kimberlee Speakman,

who is a SJPS graduate of the Class of 2009. She is

presently a reporter for Channel 2 News. We will also

be showing a special video created by Nacia Paulo,

who is also a SJPS graduate of the Class of 2009. She

has video clips of our students in their classrooms and

interviews from students and parents. We look forward

to honoring these two graduates and their sharing of

their gifts and talents.

World Day for Consecrated Life

Celebrates the Diversity and Beauty of

Consecrated Vocations

WASHINGTON – The Catholic Church will hold its annual celebration of the World Day for Consecrated Life on February 2, 2019. This celebration is a special time for individual parishes and the greater Church to celebrate the beauty of the consecrated vocation, highlight its various forms, and reflect on the unique Christ-centered witness that consecrated men and women bring to the Church and the surrounding community.

Instituted by St. Pope John Paul II in 1997, World Day for

Consecrated Life will be formally recognized during a Mass

offered by Pope Francis at the Vatican on February 2, 2019.

The day is celebrated in conjunction with the Feast of the

Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas Day,

which commemorates through the blessing and lighting of

candles that Christ is the light of the world. In the same way,

consecrated persons, by belonging exclusively to Christ,

act as the true hands and feet of Jesus by bringing his love and

the light of the Gospel to all those they encounter in their life

and work.
