A Welcome to Lucan……
On Sunday night last I was a guest of the Methodist Church at a service of
welcome for the new Minister of Lucan and Blanchardstown Methodist
communities, Rev. Tawanda Sungai. Rev. Sungai is from Zimbabwe and
arrived in Ireland just three weeks ago with his wife Agnella, and two
daughters Mutsawashe and Mufaro to take up his new appointment; his 18yr
old son Brendan has started college in Zimbabwe. Rev. Tawanda will also be
Chaplain to the Zimbabwean Methodist Community in Dublin.
The service of welcome was held in the Methodist Centre in Tyrrellstown and
was led jointly by Rev. Lawrence Graham, Minister of the Dublin Central
Mission in Abbey Street and Rev. Andrew Doughtery. Rev. Doughtery is the
District Superintendent of the Methodist Church in Dublin and he delivered a
fine sermon challenging Christians to accept the challenge of Christ to be his presence in the world,
leaving the ‘holy huddles’ that we can inhabit to bring the Light of Christ into the darkness of the world.
The service also comprised hymns sung by members of the Zimbabwean community in Ireland in their
native Shona language and was a joyous welcome for the whole Sungai family. I also welcome the
family as neighbours, since they live just two doors from me in Beech Park.
“One Lord, one faith, one Baptism….” (Ephesians 4:5) Lucan is a small village yet we have the presence of the four major
Christian churches on the Island within our community. Methodist,
Presbyterian, Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic, it could be
regarded as a microcosm of Irish Christianity. Thankfully the churches
here enjoy a cordial and respectful relationship. The ministers of all the
churches meet each month for lunch and enjoy some fellowship together.
We come together as Church at Christmas and Holy Week as well as the
annual week of prayer for Christian unity to bear united witness to Christ Jesus our Lord.
Thankfully the days when we regarded each other with suspicion and from a distance are well and truly
over.
We look forward to Rev Sungai being part of all of that and we welcome him among us as a fellow
minister of the Gospel of Christ. It’s a big transition for him and all his family, a new country, a new
home, a new appointment, new schools for his daughters, we pray that his ministry will be blessed by
the Lord and that his time among us may be both happy and fulfilling.

you consider the installation of

Annual Mass of Remembrance
Our Annual Mass of for all our departed
relatives and friends will take place on
Wednesday 14th
November at 8pm
At this Mass the names of those from our parish
community who died in the past 12 months will
be specially remembered. The names of all
those on the November list of the dead will
automatically be included .
The Flower Fairies were at it again!
The Altar at St Mary's last Sunday for the Harvest
was in one word - Stunning. The colours of the
flowers, mixed in with all the fruit and vegetables,
the two pumpkin vases on the altar were all very
pretty. The little wheelbarrow full of fruit added
to the picture. Well done ladies - again.
Letter to the Editor Why oh why do some people think it is
acceptable to park on the Disabled Bays,
specially at Saint Mary's Church, when they are
not permitted to do so?
In short, it's not acceptable. In length, it's
ignorant, arrogant, bad-manners, lazy, boorish,
two-fingered and totally maddening for people
entitled to use them.
Hey folks, they are there for a reason. They
provide convenient parking for people in order to
access areas such as the church and the parish
centre. This takes so much stress out of one's task
in attending some sort of function.
The problems at Saint Mary's are not confined to
Mass times by any stretch. I have heard of
people returning home immediately upon their
arrival at the Church because of the inability to
park in the disabled bays they are entitled to use
because of drivers misusing them. This again is
shameful and totally unacceptable.
I have heard many an excuse; "I was running
late", "I'm only parking here for 2 minutes", "I
just have to collect someone". Nowhere near
credible and none that would cover in obtaining a
permit.
What sanctions are in place for drivers misusing
the Disabled Parking Bays? Could initiatives be
put in place? Is it right to do nothing?
I look forward to positive action. I'm sorry to say
that I could be waiting for positive inaction from
certain car users. Ignorance is not bliss.
Name and address with editor.
Thank You I had the privilege of attending Mass
in St Mary's last Sunday, what beauty
greeted one, flowers, colour, fruit, veg.
and arranged with such care. May I
say thank you to the ladies or gents who went to
so much trouble to make harvest so beautiful.
God Bless your hands,
Yours Rita,
Palmerstown , Dublin 20.

Transport Users Most of the new traffic ramps being installed
throughout Lucan are of a better quality than the
previously ones. They do a great job in slowing
down traffic causing no damage to vehicles
crossing them compared to many of the past
ramps; the designers have now got them right.
There are a few iron ramps in the new estates in
Lucan that are very severe when crossing, this is
very hard on people with a disability. I hope these
are only a temporary measure and should be
replaced as soon as possible with the standard
safe ramps.

Love is Never Lost As the months pass and the
seasons change,
something of tranquility
descends, and
although the well-remembered footstep will not
sound again, nor the voice call from the room
beyond, there seems to be about one in the air
an astmosphere of love, a living presence.

Lucan Drama Producing 3 Exciting One-Acts Lucan Drama is in the throes of
rehearsing its Autumn production
which will be an enthralling night
of 3 comic, albeit, sometimes serious,
One-Act plays.
The first of these plays, Laundry and Bourbon
by James Mc Lure is set in a town in Texas
U.S.A. and focuses on themes of love, loss and
longing. Its backdrop is the Vietnam War.
A world away is the second of these three plays
Shadow of The Glen by J.M. Synge which
depicts an Ireland which has now almost become
folklore, the world of the peasant farmer on the
Aran Islands at the turn of the century. Yet its
themes are similar, that of love, loss and longing.

set among the Dublin street vendors with an

Sad and annoyed to hear that the playground at

You have to wonder what is

CHOOL
NEWS
Lucan Community College Space week in Lucan Community College: Last
week saw us celebrate “Space Week” (4th-10th
October) with the students and teachers of Lucan
Community College embracing this event. The
event saw us discovering how the plants orbit our
solar system, the constellations of the stars, where
is the Big Dipper, can we find “Orion’s Belt”?
We also looked at how lasers worked. Did you
know the word Laser is actually a scientific
acronym L.A.S.E.R for Light Amplification of
Simulated Emission of Radiation.
Our Science teachers travelled to Birr, County
Offaly over the weekend to visit the original Birr
Telescope, which at one time was the largest
telescope in the world. Birr Observatory now
hosts one of the largest Radio Telescopes in the
world.
The teachers also hosted a “Space Week Table
Quiz” for our space mad students.
Overall it was a great week. A big thank you to
the Science department for their enthusiasm in
making space so exciting for all of our students
over the last week. 'How did the Alien break his
phone... he “Saturn” it!'
Boys Senior Rugby Team lose to Adamstown
CC in local derby disappointment: Well done
to our Boys Senior Rugby Team who performed
brilliantly in their mid-week loss to Adamstown
CC. The team performed amazingly with the
scoreline not truly reflecting their efforts on the
day. Darragh Reid capped his man of the match
performance with a scintillating try in this local
derby match that saw long term absentee Jamie
Croke return to action and Luke Finnerty
displaying the hallmarks of tough rugby battle.
Well done to all the squad.
The Boys Junior Rugby Team also performed
heroically in the mis-match game with a very
physical Adamstown CC. Scott O’Sullivan scored
a terrific try after a wonderful team move and
deserved his man of the match award. However, it
was not to be on the day as Lucan CC lost 20-5 to
a team with much more experience of schools
rugby. The team will have learned a great deal
from the experience and it will no doubt help
them as they train for future challenges. Thanks to
Mr Morrissey and Mr Byrne for their continued
dedication to building rugby with the college.
Language Literacy Numeracy – Wise saying of
the week:
“Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a

This is a Garden Path Sentence, which is a

seemingly familiar meaning but is actually not the
one intended. This is known Syntactic Ambiguity
– involves a sentence that may be interpreted in
more than one way due to its sentence structure.

Coláiste Phádraig CBS Friendship Week: A large number of activities
were organised this week to celebrate Friendship
Week in Coláiste Phádraig.
A number of TY students, Kevin McGrane,
Tadhg Stones, Samuel Keogh, Adam Whyte,
Tighe Everett and Jamie Clarke, worked with Ms.
Ryan in the Art Room over the past two weeks
designing and making different coloured
friendship bracelets. They also took all 1st yr
students to the Art Room to make their painted
handprint for a specially designed Friendship
Tree. They then spent a huge amount of time
setting up the canteen before bringing the 1st yrs
in and presenting them with the beautifully
designed friendship bracelets. The 1st yrs then
placed their individual hand print on the
friendship tree as a symbol of their commitment
to mutual respect, well-being, friendship and anti-
bullying. The TY students also photographed the
event and displayed the photos around the school
on the TV Screens and Twitter. Well done
especially to these students on their initiative,
team-work and creativity.
Derek Hanway from Jigsaw (a confidential
support service for young people) conducted
workshops on mental health and well-being with
all 6th
yr classes. Additionally, four 5th
yr
students, Brian Achugbu, Chizo Ajouku, Glen
Keating and Alex Tsiogas, gave a power point
presentation on mental health and well-being to
1st yrs during their SPHE classes. These students
had received training from Jigsaw in youth
mentoring in preparation for their presentation.
1st, 2
nd and 3
rd yr students attended a 90min
presentation from Humour Fit on the themes of
anti-bullying, substance abuse and racism.
1st and 2
nd yrs also attended a French and German
breakfast together on Monday. There were lots of
delicious foods on display, including croissants,
pain au chocolat, jus d’orange, du chocolat and of
course German frankfurters! Many thanks to Ms.
Melia for helping with the preparation and
cooking of the food and also to the French and
German Departments for providing the food.
1st yrs also attended a 2
nd breakfast later on in the
week and the school music club were on hand to
perform some beautiful tunes.
Educational psychologist Patricia Fitzpatrick gave
a talk to 5th
yrs on the theme of motivation and
well-being.
A representative from Foróige also spoke to the
Transition Years and provided peer mentoring
training for them to work with incoming 1st yr
students in 2019.
Poster and poetry competitions were held for all
year groups on the theme of friendship.
Well done to all of our students for embracing the
spirit of the events with such enthusiasm and
respect.
Well done also to Mr. Keane all his hard work
planning and organising Friendship Week and to
the whole staff for their co-operation and
assistance. Well-being is everyone’s
responsibility and we take the issue very seriously
at Coláiste Phádraig.
Soccer: Our u17 soccer team advanced to the 2nd
rnd of the Leinster Junior Cup after defeating
Clonkeen College 5-1 last Friday. Played in
appalling conditions, Lucan produced a fine
display of attacking football to see off their
spirited opponents. James Harold opened the
scoring early on with a stunning drive from the
edge of the box before Adam Wells tucked home
the team’s second from close range soon after.
Clonkeen were struggling to break down a
formidable Lucan defence superbly marshalled by
Jamie Callaghan and Ryan Young. They did pull
a goal back early in the 2nd
half however but Kyle
Robinson restored Lucan’s 2 goal advantage
when he fired home from close range after a
beautifully cushioned header from Evan Nolan.
James Harold capitalised on a defensive error to
stroke home a fourth before Kyle Robinson raced
onto a through ball to lash in number five into the
top corner to seal a comfortable and impressive
win for the team.
60 students from the school travelled to the Aviva
Stadium on Tuesday for the UEFA Nations
League match between Ireland and Wales.
Despite the disappointing 1-0 defeat, the students
enjoyed the atmosphere on the night as they were
seated close to the singing section in the West
Stand. They had a great view of the match and
gave raucous support to the Boys in Green
throughout. The defeat hasn’t dampened the
students’ spirits as most of them plan to return for
the hugely anticipated friendly against Northern
Ireland next month.
Current Affairs Club: Our Current Affairs
Lunch Club had an interesting and lively post-
Budget meeting last Thursday. The students read
a number of articles on Budget 2019 and
discussed the impact of the changes on young
people and families especially. There is also a
Senior Cycle Economics Competition organised
based around the Budget with prizes for 5th
and
6th
yr winners.
St Joseph’s College
Camogie: Well done to our Senior Camogie team
who beat Castleknock Community College last
Friday with a score of 7-10 to 3-5. Next match is
against Loreto Balbriggan next Monday.
President’s Award: Very proud of our 8 Silver
Gaisce Awardees who received their Silver
President's Award in the Helix on Tuesday! A
great bunch of dedicated, adventurous and
generous girls who could make it to the Áras
yet themselves! Roll on the Gold Award!!
Music Ensemble: Well done to Ms Mellet and
her talented music students on the excellent
music concert last Thursday and a big thank
you to everybody who came along to enjoy the
evening.
Barretstown Fundraiser: Congratulations to
Mr Fitzgerald’s LCVP class, who collected
over €1000 for Barretstown children’s charity
with their very creative fundraiser. Male
teachers agreed to wear high heels for the day,
to the delight of their students. Thank you to
everybody who contributed to a very worthy
cause.

Lucan Community College: I am continuing to
follow up with the Minister on the issues that are
delaying the extension and refurbishment works
at Lucan Community College. I am aware that
these works continue to be delayed and this is a
huge cause of concern to the entire school
community at Lucan Community College. I will
keep the school up to date on any further
developments with this project.
BusConnects: The NTA have confirmed to me
that they have received thousands of submissions
and that it will take a number of months to work
through all of the feedback presented to them and
for everything to be considered. Following the
completion of that process it is expected that a
second public consultation process on a revised
network plan will then take place where
commuters will get a second chance to have their
say.

Social Housing in Shackleton Estate: I have
contacted South Dublin County Council’s
housing department to seek clarification about the
allocation of social housing in Shackleton estate. I
welcome the social housing being delivered by
the developer however I am concerned at
suggestions that it will not be dispersed
throughout the estate in line with best practice.
Planning Enforcement at Ballydowd Grove:
I welcome correspondence from the Council’s
planning enforcement section confirming they are
continuing to take enforcement measures in
relation to ongoing planning breaches at the
entrance to Ballydowd Grove. I will continue to
monitor the situation.
Clinics continue in my constituency office every
evening by appointment.
Cllr. Liona O’Toole –Independent [email protected] 087-2795274
Esker Meadows: I met residents at their AGM
last week and raised the issue of the damaged
walls located at the entrance into the estate and
the damaged footpaths within the estates that need
to be repaired. The council engineer has
confirmed to me that the area will be examined.
Special Housing meeting: At this week’s Special
Housing meeting I raised the concerns in relation
to the delivery of social, affordable and private
dwellings in the Adamstown SDZ. The design
should ensure evenly dispersed housing
throughout the development. To date some
developments have not been designed this way
and I will be pursuing this further
Griffeen Park Playground: Unfortunately the
‘Troll’ within the playground has once again been
badly damaged by a minority of people. I’ve a
motion on the agenda for this week’s Lucan Area
committee and will discuss the options available.

Lucan Road Markings: Having pushed for some
years for the (imminent) extension of the school
time speed restrictions on the road section from
Roselawn to Chapel Hill (and highlighted
potholes), I welcome the resurfacing works
carried out recently along the full stretch.
However there are outstanding issues with the
location of markings and delays in yellow box
repainting. Will keep chasing.
Willsbrook Park Review: At this month’s Area
Committee I’ve a motion tabled looking at further
amenity improvement requirements for
Willsbrook Park.
Playground Vandalism: More fires lit at
Griffeen Valley Park playground yet management
persist in saying that CCTV and fence height will
make no difference. Perhaps the proximity of the
new pool will make a difference but that won’t be
completed until spring 2020 as currently
projected.

Special Meeting on Housing at South Dublin
Co Council: A Motion I tabled at the Special
Meeting reads as follows: With house prices and
rents in the private sector spiralling out of control,
we ask the Minister for Housing to look at
extending the income threshold for eligibility for
a council home. Increasing the €35,000 threshold
for single people to €45,000 for couples to
€60,000. We commit to writing to the Minister for
Housing. I tabled the motion to make provision
for those who are paying over inflated rents and
those who can’t get mortgages. Thankfully it
passed, with FG and two SF members voting
against. Autumn Leaves Falling: It’s that time of
year again when the leaves are plentiful on the
paths and and roads. It can be very slippy on
paths and roads.

PALMERSTOWN SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB
Palmerstown Shotokan Karate Club along
with HDKI Ireland students travelled to the
UK to take part in the open HDKI GB
Championships in Dudley, with a total of
46 students and parents, we travelled in
force which has grown in size over the last
4 years. The competition took place on Saturday
13th October in the Dudley Leisure Centre with a
lot of competitors attending, after great success at
this event for the last 4 years we aimed to do the
same, with students ranging from aged 8 up to
adults we had entries in most of the categories,
with the help of Squad coaches Ray Stritch and
Jason Smyth. HDKI Ireland dominated most of
the events and won a total of 16 Gold, 14 silver
and 11 bronze medals. We took away the 2 top
trophies of the day which were awarded for best
spirited student of the day which was awarded to
Victor Delmas from the Hombu dojo and best
overall competitor of the day which went to one
of our own local students Chloe Holten from
Palmerstown Karate club. The day was a great
success for everyone and we ended up finishing
the event with team Ireland vs team GB,
unfortunately we got pipped at the post this year
with team GB winning 3/2 to get their payback
for us beating them last year at this event. I would
like to thank everyone involved that made the
competition a success and we look forward to
next year when we hope to regain our medal
count and hopefully regain the Ireland vs GB title.
We have more competitions coming up and
hopefully we will have the same success as of
late, yours in karate Ray Stritch (Squad manager)
