“I have learned today that Dublin Bus intend to cease to operate the 78 bus route within the coming days and to replace it with a cross-city service from Liffey Valley to the City Centre and out to Finglas Shopping Centre. The bus route will be known as the 44”. Deputy Keating has attempted to raise this in the Dáil seeking the Minister’s support for the National Transport Authority to introduce a better consultation process with local communities and their Councillors and elected TDs to ensure that a better public service will meet the needs of everybody. The introduction of the No. 13 bus with little notification and information on the timetable, the change of route and the terminus has caused confusion and frustration for many public transport users. Currently the No. 13 bus starts in Grange Castle Industrial Estate and travels through Clondalkin to Inchicore into the city and out to Ballymun resulting in large numbers of bus users being left at bus stops en route because of an inadequate service. The National Transport Authority receives in excess of €70 million per year to subsidise our national public transport. This money is part of the infrastructure to enhance our economy and provide an essential service. “If bad management was an Olympic sport, Dublin Bus would be in line for a gold medal” said Deputy Keating. Despite the fact that Ireland has one ofthe lowest breastfeeding rates in theworld, Irish mothers and babies defied thestatistics to place first and second in theQuintessence Breastfeeding Challengewhich took place across the world onSaturday, 1st October 2011. Irish charityFriends of Breastfeeding coordinated theChallenge events in eight venuescountrywide, which saw nearly 400children breastfeeding simultaneously.Dublin, which had 146 nurslings, and Cork(which was only just behind with 145) weretriumphant as the top two sites in theworld.

Jolene Keating, general secretary ofFriends of Breastfeeding, said “The focusof Friends of Breastfeeding is to foster apositive breastfeeding culture in Irelandand raise awareness about breastfeedingsupport options. The mothers and babiestook part in the Challenge surrounded byfathers, grannies and older children inwhat was very much a family event.Friends of Breastfeeding would like tothank everyone who came along tosupport the event and breastfeeding inIreland.”

Maria Moulton, author of “The MammyDiaries” and organizer of the Corkleg of the Challenge, said

“Breastfeeding has many well-documented benefits including betterhealth for both mothers and babies.Indeed, recent research has indicated thatbreastfeeding reduces the risk of SuddenInfant Death Syndrome (also known asSIDS or Cot Death)1. However, manywomen fail to meet their ownbreastfeeding goals, and wean theirchildren prematurely (to formula or solids),well before meeting recommended WorldHealth Organisation (“WHO”) guidelines.Indeed, the National Infant FeedingSurvey 20082 found that only 13.3% ofIrish mothers had exclusively breastfedtheir babies for the 6 monthsrecommended by WHO. Among thereasons given for not breastfeeding for atleast 6 months were lack of support andfeeling uncomfortable breastfeeding inpublic. The aim of the Challenge was tohighlight the resources that are availableto breastfeeding mothers in Ireland and tohelp normalize breastfeeding in public.”

The Quintessence BreastfeedingChallenge is an annual event which isstaged worldwide to raise public

awareness of the needfor proper information

and support forbreastfeedingfamilies and the

normalization of

breastfeeding in society. It originated in theCanadian province of British Columbiaback in 2001 with 856 babies and theirmothers sitting down to nursesimultaneously at 26 different sites.

Brian Hayes TD, Minister of State at the Department of PublicExpenditure and Reform with special responsibility for the Office of PublicWorks, last Thursday attended the official opening of a joint art exhibitionbetween the Department of Finance and Personnel (Northern Ireland) andthe Office of Public Works in the South Dublin County Library, Tallaght,Dublin 24. The exhibition was officially opened by Sammy Wilson MP MLA,Minister for Finance and Personnel, Northern Ireland.

Opening the exhibition Minister Sammy Wilson said: “I think it is entirelyappropriate that this project, which for so many years now, has proven sucha success in bringing artworks to venues small and large, rural and city, should continue to receive the support of my Department and so I am verypleased to be able to be here with you tonight for the official launch in theRepublic of Ireland. Hopefully, this exhibition will be just as successful asin previous years and will prove to be another great platform forshowcasing artworks from both our local artists and beyond”.

Also speaking at the opening Minister Brian Hayes said: “This is my firsttime to take part in the joint exhibition and I am delighted that I am able todo so here in my own Constituency in this wonderful library that serves thelocal community so well. As many of you here will know, this library is oneof the best in Ireland and we are fortunate to have been invited here as Iknow the art works will be seen by the hundreds of visitors who use thisfantastic facility every day. Here, in Tallaght, we are most fortunate to haveaccess to the vibrant Civic Theatre and dynamic Rua Red Arts Centre, bothbringing the arts to South County Dublin in an impressive way”.

The Minister continued: “Every year a different theme is selected forthe exhibition. This year it was decided to focus on how artists entitle theirworks. The exhibition was curated by the Art Management Offices of theDFP and OPW. It brings together a wide variety of art works that reflectcontemporary visual art. I have been informed that this theme is a novelone which hasn't featured in any exhibition in recent years and therefore itoffers audiences an insight into how artists approach this aspect of theirwork. The wide array of work on display in the exhibition gives you an ideaas to how vibrant visual art is on our island. It is exciting to know that suchwork is currently being created by Irish artists. Some of the works arebeautiful and others provocative. All of them offer the audience somethingto think about. When viewed in the context of the artists' statements, weare able to approach them in a more info rmed way”.

The exhibition has already, this year, been to Parliament Buildings inStormont, Belfast and will also be travelling to the Market Place Theatreand Arts Centre in Armagh, and Town Hall, Claremorris, County Mayo.

Titles is open to the public until Wednesday 26th October 2011 at

the South Dublin County Library. Admission is free.

ART EXHIBITION OPENS IN THE SOUTH DUBLIN

COUNTY LIBRARY, TALLAGHTLocal Area Representative Charlie O' Connor has called on the Minister for

Health to confirm what actions he now plans to deal with the implications forTallaght Hospital on the proposed closure of St. Bridget's Nursing Home in

Brittas. He has said that the issue has

clearly been badly handled by theHSE and the announcement of theclosure has come as a great shock tothe patients and their families.

The former Dáil Deputy for DublinSouth-West had arranged for theFianna Fáil Spokesperson, BillyKellegher, T.D. to raise the issue in aspecial Dáil Debate along withDeputies Catherine Byrne (FG Dublin

South-Central), Sean Crowe ( SFDublin South-West) and Billy Timmons

(South Wicklow). He added that the proposed closure

would clearly have a huge effect on TallaghtHospital given that St. Bridget's regularly takes

patients form the Hospital. He said, however, that there must clearly

be a strong focus on the needs of thecurrent residents of the home

and he hoped that the HSEwould engage effectivelywith the families.

Today the Society cautiouslywelcomes the announcement of theestablishment of a new project teamwhose role will be to examine how tooperate the 116 000 hotline. TheISPCC have campaigned for theestablishment of this missingchildren’s hotline for a number ofyears and wish to acknowledge thework of Senator Jillian van Turnhoutwho initiated today’s motion.

National 116 000 hotlines takecalls and offers support from anyoneconcerned about a missing child, including parents and childrenthemselves. The hotline takes callsregarding different types of childdisappearances, including runaways, parental abductions, missingunaccompanied migrant minors, criminal abductions, lost, injured orotherwise missing children.

The Missing Children’s Hotline isnot intended to replace the role of theAn Garda Siochana who are the leadagency in dealing with missingchildren. It is intended to bothcomplement and support existingservices. The hotline’s focus is aboutsupporting the children and familiesand ensuring a European common

number is easily accessible to all, whether in Ireland or abroad.

The establishment of this hotline isvery important but equally so isensuring that this hotline is runprofessionally, effectively andefficiently to meet Europeanstandards. The ISPCC, having metstrict criteria, are active members ofMissing Children Europe (MCE). TheISPCC have been working closelywith MCE in terms of the developmentof best practice and cross border cooperation in operating the 116 000hotline. The need for a quality servicewith the ability to work at a crossboarder level with other EuropeanNGO’s is an essential part of the roleof the 116 000 hotline.

Mary Nicholson, AdvocacyManager “The ISPCC believes thatthis hotline needs to be established assoon as possible, notwithstanding thecurrent national financial situation. The ISPCC is recognised as a leaderin the provision of phone listeningservices worldwide with over 22 years’experience providing listeningservices to children via our Childlineservice and as such is best placed torun the hotline”.

A student from Tallaght made it into the top-tenshortlist to win the highly-prestigious global JamesDyson Award.

To make it to this stage is no mean feat but 25year-old John Horrigan from the National College ofArt and Design invented the “Cara Mobile ParentingSystem”.

John is among ten Irish finalists who made itthrough to the international stage of the James Dysonaward.

John’s invention is an armature and baby cradlethat can be attached to wheelchairs to allow disabledparents to safely carry and interact with their smallchildren.

John says: “The Cara cradle and armaturecombination is designed to accommodate a speciallydesigned baby cradle, which allows wheelchair-usingparents to safely carry the child from place to placeboth indoors and outdoors.”

Among the other 9 Irish student inventions that have been shortlisted forthe global James Dyson Award are ‘Skylane Seating System’, whichreplaces current seats and flooring in airlines with lightweight raised seatsand a mezzanine floor and “Medimover”, a uniquely designed device to aidin the transfer of patients.

Projects were selected by Irish judges – Adrian Weckler, TechnologyEditor Sunday Business Post, Karlin Lillington (Irish Times) and BarrySheehan of Design Ireland.

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. It is runby the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson’s charitable trust, in 18different countries.

There is no limit to the scale or potential of inventions submitted.Previous entries include a GPS for guide dogs, a solar powered reef boatand a hydration vest for athletes.

The James Dyson Foundation is committed to encouraging more youngpeople to take up design and engineering and James Dyson himself believesthat this design competition goes a long way towards achieving this goal:

“We need to do more to support and celebrate the engineers of the future.Making things is not about grime and grease, but solving real life problems.”

James Dyson will announce the global winner on 8th November 2011.

Dear Michelle,I had a hernia operation four years ago. Afterwards I took a long time to heal and to

be honest I have never fully felt quite right after it. Also I have very often had pains inmy stomach in and around the scar site. Six months ago while visiting my nephew inLondon I took a bad turn and was taken to hospital. The doctor who treated me saidthat not only had the hernia returned but that the way it had been stitched up the firsttime had caused a lot of scar tissue to build up and actually made my problem worse. On top of that, the surgeon in Dublin had left pieces of surgical swabs inside me, whichexplained the pain that I had been left with over the last few years as they were morethan likely the source of constant infections. As this happened four years ago, have Irun out of time or can I still take a claim against the hospital?

Mrs Neary, (Dublin 24)

Dear Mrs Neary,I am sorry to hear of your health issues and hope you are doing better now that the

source of your problem has been discovered. Under the Civil Liability Act, all claimshave a time limit within which they must be brought, depending upon the nature of theclaim in question. Different types of claim have different limitation periods. For example, claims under contract law have a 6 year time limit whereas personal Injuries have a twoyear limitation. At the moment the time limit on a case like yours, that is a case for

medical negligence, is two years from the date of the incident that causes the injury or,(and this is what is most relevant to you Mrs Neary), two years from the date that theinjury is discovered. As you only found out about your injury and the extent of thedamage caused by the surgeon who initially operated on you while you were in Londonsix months ago, the clock did not start ticking until then. So in answer to your question, your case is not statute barred and you still have time to take a claim against the hospitaland Doctor responsible for your condition. I hope this has been of some help. I wouldsuggest that you contact a Solicitor straight away if you are considering taking a case,as medical negligence cases can be very complex and require a lot of time andpreparation in terms of compiling medical notes and reports etc. Most of the medicalreports used in such cases are obtained from Practitioners and specialists from outsidethe state and so, as I have already said, medical negligence cases need to be actedupon pretty quickly in order to afford the acting Solicitor and supporting consultants andBarristers time to build a case.

I wish you the very best of luck in whatever you chose to do . If you need any furtherinformation you can contact me at the office and I will be more than happy to answerany further questions or concerns you may have.

Kind regards,

Michelle Cronin.

Dear Michelle,I was married for a very short time back in 2007. I left in January 2008 to travel to

Australia. We were quite young and should never have got married in the first place. My Ex-Husband and I were renting the house we lived in and had no other assets eithertogether or individually. Last week I received a letter from a Solicitor asking me to signa separation agreement. The letter states that I need to have independent advice frommy own Solicitor before signing. The trouble is I don’t have a Solicitor as I have neverneeded one before. To be honest I am worried about the expense as I am only workingpart time. Also I really do not see the need to sign any agreement as we will be able toget a divorce soon anyway. Is it ok for me to ignore this letter?

Weall know a

gal’s best friend is herdog! Dogs love us

unconditionally, however even thenicest doggie has been known to bare his

gnashers and often it’s a small child who bears thebrunt of his anger.

All parents know that kids go off the rails when theyspot a dog. Their natural instinct is to run up and pet theanimal, try to hug it, pick it up and scream and squeal withexcitement often upsetting the poor pooch, albeitunintentionally.

Now, to a small child and even an adult this type ofadulation is a normal reaction and appears cute; to a dogit spells something entirely different. Sudden movementsand loud, ear splitting screams often cause the animal tofeel fear and could promote an aggressive response in thefriendliest and most easy going of canines.

So, as a parent, what can you do to protect your childfrom strange dogs?

Below are a few tips I hope will come in handy.Teach your child to respect a dog’s instincts and most

importantly, its fears. When around a strange dog, ask yourchild to speak quietly and to move slowly – no runningaround making mad flapping movements.

Never allow your child to ride a bike, a flicker scooteror skate too close to a strange dog. Some dogs feelscared because they are not normally used to these thingsand may even chase the moving object because suchbehaviour can trigger a dog’s natural prey instinct.

If a strange dog gets too frisky or excited around yourchild, teach the child to behave like a statue. Your child willneed to drop any food or toy they’re holding and stand stilllike a statue or a tree. Statues are boring for dogs – they

will usually come over, sniff and go away. Teach your child to never; again I

stress, NEVER pat a dog without the owner’spermission. I’ve lost count of the times kids have rushed

up to me in the park to try and grab hold of my dogs’ headsand attempt to rub them and when I pull my dogs away theparents get stroppy. There’s a reason you must seek theowners’ permission. Some dogs do not like strangerspatting them and may become aggressive due tonervousness. Teach your child to respect a dog’s personalspace and his right to refuse to be patted by strangers.

If the owner gives permission, teach your child toapproach the dog slowly and quietly and allow the dog tosniff the back of the child’s hand; then gently pat the dog’schest, sides or back. Dogs’ don’t generally like to berubbed on their heads. Keep your face away from the dogand never stare into its eyes. For very small dogs, yourchild may need to kneel down, keeping the top half of thechild’s body straight and not bend over the dog.

Tell your child it’s a big no no to sneak up on a dog thatis eating or sleeping. If a dog is eating, your child must waituntil he has moved away from the feed area beforeapproaching him. If the dog is sleeping, your child needsto stand back and call the dog out of his bed if they wish togive him a cuddle. Any dog can bite you if it’s scared, confused or in pain – even your family pet. You must allowa dog to see you before you approach it. You must allowa dog to sniff you before you pat it.

Puppies! Never allow your child pick up a puppy.Mummy dogs are very protective of their babies just ashumans are, and may bite the child if she thinks they’ll hurtthem.

Make sure your child doesn’t approach or pat a dog thathas his head sticking out of a car window. It’s likely theanimal is protecting and defending what he perceives ashis space.

At USFI (The Unmarried &Separated Families of Ireland) we areexperiencing a rise in a group that isn'ttalked about. That group isgrandparents. Over the last 4 monthswe have had so many grandparentscoming to us in distress. There storiesare very similar. Their child hasseparated from the relevant partnerand there are children caught in themiddle. The long and short of it is, thatas a result of the split for whateverreason, the grandparents are loosingout. They can't see the children.

This happens for many reasons.

Separations happen and you couldtalk about it for a very long time. Thefall out of a relationship breakdownisn't pretty. The bottom line is that therelationship is over. The hard part isagreeing on access/custodyarrangements that will take in allmembers of the families.Grandparents are a group that isdeeply affected by this. If talking tothe estranged partner doesn't work, things can be get heated very quickly.Emotions are difficult to quantify andvery difficult to express - especiallywhen fuelled by an argument. Saying

sorry isn't an option for a lot of people. The obvious next step is a trip toCourt.

What we have done is set up asystem in the charity that creates asafe environment for the grandparentsto have their say. When aconversation takes place, over time, itis revealed what is really going on. Itis at that point that action can betaken. We have been writing letters toestranged parties on behalf of thegrandparent - taking responsibility forany upset that they caused directly. Itis important to note that what a

grandparent is fighting for is not moreaccess or custody for their child (theparent in this story), but to havequality time with the grandchild/grandchildren. Once the letter is sent, regardless of whether proceedingshave been started in Court, is havinga very positive affect. It is allowingroom for real healing to take place. That won't happen in front of a Judge.

If you, or anyone in your family isaffected by any of these issues, please don't hesitate to contact us atthe office.

Traveller Focus Group

This campaign was developed by the Tallaght Drugs Task Force Traveller FocusGroup, funded by TDTF and supported by Tallaght Travellers CommunityDevelopment Project.

TDTF established a focus group to address drug use issues in the travellingcommunities. Through this campaign we hope to create awareness among travellingcommunities or our extensive range of drug treatment and support services.According to the HRB (Health Research Board), 12 members of the travellingcommunity in Tallaght presented for treatment in 2008 and 19 in 2009. However, wefear the level of use is much greater than this. It is the role of our focus group togauge the level of supports required by these communities in terms of drug treatmentbut also education and family support.

We hope travellers will feel comfortable enough to call the confidential phone linefor information and support. Then maybe this line will help us assess the real extentof this issue for travellers.

SPORTConor O’ Dwyer (10th) and Donal Foley (11th) packed well to win the Seniorteam prize with Tallaghts Keith Sherlock (12th), Luke Coleman (13th), EoinBrennan (15th) and Artjom Kutjavin (16th) taking second, whilst SportsworldsLucy Darcy, Ruth Kelly, Kathleen Horgan and Ciara Foster took the SeniorLadies honours.

Gerry Woods led home Dave Meehan, Niall Coppinger, Niall Coppingerand Irfan Quershi combined finishing positions of 172 were enough to win theMasters team category ahead of Raheny and the Tallaght Ladies PaulaMurray, Deirdre Harris and Liz did likewise.

Elsewhere, many Tallaght juveniles consolidated their positions in the huntfor the top six league awards in the cross country league series when theyagain put in some solid performances in two recent cross country leaguemeets in the Phoenix Park.

With the last league outing taking place in the Phoenix Park on 23rdOctober its looking likely that a number of these young athletes will returnwith league titles and many more with trophies for finishing in the top six inmany age groups. Moses Ikpefua looks nailed on to take the U9 title after hisrecent 2 successes which he added to his 2nd placing in the first league andJohn Lyons, presently in 6th could with another good run improve his overallstanding, whilst in the U9 girls Aimee Kenna, despite missing the secondcontest is in 5th and is also in the hunt for a trophy.

At U10 degree, Faye Dervan is another who looks likely to take a title asshe is presently 3 points clear on her nearest rival and although Orla Doyle isin 11th she too could make the top six with a good run, whilst in the boysequivalent age group Yan Aengus Geraghty will at least finish 2nd overall afterthe final outing.

In the U11 age group Kevin Lahiff is 2nd overall, Dylan O’ Brien is 3rd andKarl Gill who missed league 2 can improve on his 10th placing in the finalencounter, whilst Eve Keegan and Destiny Ikpefua are presently in joint 5thand they too are well in contention.

Christopher Duffy and Seamus Noone are in 1st and 2nd respectively inthe U12 series and can’t be caught for the top 2 positions, but with only a few

points separating them the final race will undoubtedly be a an exciting ding-dong battle from start to finish between the two club mates. In the girlsequivalent age group Grace Dervan and Nadine Johnston Hickey, 4th and5th overall to date, should if running to form finish in the top six and the likesof Claudia Kavanagh and Alana Walsh can improve on their respective 11thand 19th positions.

Cathal Dervan is presently in 2nd at U13 level and is still in contention fortop hounours whist Sadiq Aisrs should at least finish in the top 6 and FionnCarroll also has a chance of moving up from 9th with Paul Lyons capable ofmoving up from 16th in the overall standings. Rebecca Casey is another whoon present form can consolidate her 6th place standing and both Ciara Jordanand Jennifer Mc Guinness can move up the U13 table.

Judging by his three clear victories to date, National 800 and 1500m trackchampion Mustaffe Nasir should reign supreme at U14 degree and KayleighClarke can improve on her 4th place standing in the same age group, whilstJoseph Lyons is in a similar position at U15 degree and he too should finishamongst the trophy winners.

Jade Johnston is on target to secure another cross country league title asshe is presently 11 points clear of her nearest rival and a top 8 place will seeher take the U16 title and although Conor Murray is presently lying in 2nd inthe boys equivalent it looks likely he will have to settle for the runner up trophyeven with a win, unless a number of other factors come into play in the finalouting.

Sean Mc Cabe is another on course for a title after he strung together 3straight wins at U17 degree, however a decision to whether or not to contestthe U18 Championships which is on the same day as the final league racewill undoubtedly have bearing on the outcome of the league. John Daly isanother in this age group who should also finish in the top 6 as he is presently5th overall and Karen Fagan can consolidate her second place position whenshe runs in a few weeks time, whilst Philip Murray 3rd overall at U18 degreeshould do likewise, even if he too contests the U18 Championships.

Simon Burch is a photographerbased in Dublin. Originally fromNorthern Ireland he worked in Londonfor 8 years, moving to Dublin in1996to establish a studio. His work practiceis divided between assigned and FineArt work.

Simon Burch has won Internationalawards, and his work is held incollections in Ireland and abroad. Hehas been commissioned by TimeMagazine, his work has appeared in

the New Yorker, and has twice beenan invited artist to the Royal HibernianAcademy Annual Show.

www.sburch.netIt is rare that a photographer is

able to exhibit their work on this scale. Simon Burch was shown the

expansive walls of Gallery 1 in RUARED, South Dublin Arts Centre andknew that he could create somethingvery special. Eleven captivatinglandscape prints, the largestmeasuring 305cm (10 feet) in length, now float from the gallery walls.

Photographed on film, using an RH Phillips Compact II Camera, theimages burst with colour and clarity, yet have a natural quality which Burchbelieves only film can achieve.

Explaining his process Burch said, “Once I’ve seen the image, it takes

around thirty minutes to set the shotbefore the photograph is taken. It is amore interactive and involving processthan using a digital camera. Taking thephoto is only the start.”

The camera produces a filmnegative measuring 8”x10” that allowsthe image to be scaled up withoutcompromising on quality. The finalpieces (the majority measuring over 2metres in width) are the largest singleprints available in Europe, a serviceoffered by only two manufacturers inLondon and Germany.

The result is impressive. Expertlyhung, with a bespoke hanging system, the prints float from the walls

unimpeded by frames or glass. Thesofter feel and vulnerability of the filmmedium is a perfect match for thesubject matter – a personal view ofIreland’s ever changing landscape, and man’s interaction with it.

In this body of work the soft greensof the abandoned woodlands contrastwith the scorched, grey earth from thisyear’s gorse fires. They are momentscaptured in a landscape which iscontinuously evolving and anenvironment which is in regular statesof cycle.

Through this work Burch hints at acommonality between the physicaland emotional landscape of Ireland, that “even though it’s burnt, it’s stillbeautiful.”
