Dear Friends of KETCH,

One of the most positive highlights of the 2011 legislative session was the passage of the Employment First bill, HB 2336. This bill sets a new state policy that simply says that persons with disabilities, who are of working age and seeking state funded services, should be assisted to achieve employment in a competitive job that pays minimum wage or above. The bill will

include an Employment First Commission, which will consist of five individuals appointed by the Governor and legislators who will work to make necessary changes in state policies to facilitate the preference for competitive employment.

KETCH was actively involved in advocating for this bill. Our mission is focused upon helping the individuals we serve to live their life as independently as possible. Economic security is basic to one’s quality of life in the community. We believe that employment leads to not only greater levels of income, but also leads to greater levels of satisfaction and self-esteem. When a person is working, they have more to look forward to, have better overall health, and it helps save in the overall costs for their services.

The challenge going forward will be to work with the business sector to increase employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. There are many societal myths pertaining to a person’s disability limiting their ability to become employed. Employers we work with have found many positive effects to their bottom line from hiring a person with a disability. In the right job, a person with a disability is a positive addition to the workforce. We have had many such examples of successful job placements in our history of providing employment services.

Sincerely,

Ron PasmorePresident/CEO

Lois Wilson was recognized for her Achievement at Home after being

nominated by Targeted Case Manager III Delcie Chappuis and Community Living

Program Coordinator LaStella Duckworth. Prior to living in a residential setting at

KETCH, Lois lived in an institution for 23 years, a nursing home for 16 years, and a

retirement community for 21 years where she had her own

apartment. In 2010 she moved into a KETCH group home. The move was scary for Lois as she had lived alone for more than two decades. She quickly adjusted to this new home. She has improved her hygiene and health while relishing in her role as “grandma” at the home.

Patrick Young was nominated by Vocational Trainer Vickie Hollenbeck for his Achievement at Work. Patrick grew up in an unstable environment and had a history of being abused and exploited. When he entered KETCH services in 2008 through a crisis placement, he began working by making filters. He was very quiet and shy when he started but has since blossomed and mastered every piece of equipment on the filters production line and is always looking for ways to learn and improve his skills.

Brett Davis was recognized by Targeted Case Manager Kevin Watson for his Achievement in the Community. About a year ago, Brett decided he wanted to start volunteering in the community. He felt it was important to give back to

(continued from page 1)the city he says has given so much to him. He was given a volunteer position at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Brett truly enjoys volunteering and says he loves all of the animals and his co-workers equally. He would like to volunteer more hours at the zoo and find a second volunteer position in the near future.

Charles Pasak was nominated by Manager of Community Employment June Schneider for his Achievement in Employment. When Charles started at KETCH in 1995 he immediately went to work in the community. His first job placement did not work out but he did not give up on his goal to work in the community. He soon accepted another position at TJ Maxx in 1996. Charles still works at TJ Maxx and gives 100% to all of his various job tasks. He truly enjoys his job, his co-workers, and is proud to say he has worked at the same company for almost 15 years.

The Employer of the Year Award was given to Olive Garden East. KETCH began working with Olive Garden East in 1995. Through the years they have employed several KETCH clients and have allowed the Community Employment department to use the restaurant for job tryouts. In March of 1998 Olive Garden East hired a KETCH client to roll silverware. The hiring supervisor still works with the client today and is very supportive of her. The supervisor and his staff have built strong relationships with her, helped her overcome work related issues, and always look out for her better interest.

KETCH celebrated the expansion of the Encore Center for Lifelong Enrichment retirement program by holding a Hawaiian Luau themed open house on Au-gust 2. The previous location of the program limited the number of participants to 11. The program now has 22 participants with room to grow! Two of the Encore clients (pictured) show how happy they are to show off their new location by dancing for onlookers.

Just days before the Eighth Annual Champions’ Golf Tournament, Wichita experienced torrential downpours and nasty, humid weather. Never fail, by May 23 the sun came out just in time for an easy, breezy day on the Tallgrass Country Club course.

This year KETCH hosted an even 100 golfers. Though the number of players is down from last year, with the help of sponsors and the golf committee KETCH was able to raise over $22,000 – our highest total in eight years!

Not only was the committee instrumental in securing sponsors, but in soliciting prizes as well. Among the gifts provided was a local invention called the SandCaddy, a new item sure to be a golfer’s best friend.

As the 100 golfers enjoyed the perfect weather, they were treated to a delicious chicken marsala and pasta lunch by Carrabba’s Italian Grill. Contests included the Putting Contest with prizes valued over $500, the Hole-in-One Contest with the chance to win a trip to Hawaii, and several other specialty contests. The tournament ended with a great dinner for all and fantastic prizes for our top winners.

Thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors, especially: CBIZ MHM, Weber & Associates, Advanced Welding Technologies, Digital Office Systems, Hampel Oil, Hardman Benefit Plans, Pratt Industries, Waste Management, The Wolf, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Wal-Mart, Preferred Health Systems, ING, House of Schwan, Lewis Street Glass, and Bob’s Transmission. Thank you for making this our best year yet!

Act’s tax credit exchange program for low-income housing. An additional $150,000 grant was also awarded through the Affordable Housing Program.

KETCH has also been able to secure $15,000 through the Spirit AeroSystems Good Neighbor Fund for the commons areas in each apartment building. The Goebel Family Star Lumber Charitable Trust contributed $20,000 towards the project, the Women of Wichita Charitable Foundation contributed $10,000, and more than $20,000 was donated by the Kansas Elks Association’s Ladies Major Project.

KETCH currently serves 161 adults with developmental disabilities in its residential program. Through this residential program individuals are taught daily life skills such as cooking and cleaning. The organization is making a consorted effort to provide affordable and accessible housing as the private housing market cannot meet all of these needs at a cost individuals with developmental disabilities can afford.

The completion of Country Acres concludes phase one of the Building a Future of Success campaign. The second phase of the campaign will conclude this fall with the dedication of the 10th Street project in mid-town Wichita for adults with challenging behaviors.

Furnishings in the commons areas (pictured) were purchased with funds contributed by the Spirit AeroSystems Good Neighbor Fund.

This section is a compilation of stories from the new day program newsletter, edited by Adult Life Skills Coordinator Caroline Goodall. The newsletter is sent out monthly to parents/guardians of individuals served in KETCH day programs to inform them of what clients are doing in their programs and/or community. In each edition of the Pinnacle we will be featuring as many stories as space allows.

Day Program News For You

No one could ignore Mother Na-ture’s introduction to Summer

this year! ALS did their best to beat the heat in June. The month started out with a trip to Rock River Rapids in Derby. Every Thursday thereafter pa-trons from ALS had a blast swimming and playing at the water park. The group continued to keep cool by visit-ing Northrock Theatres for discounted movies every week. A couple of weeks in June were designated as “Theme Weeks” in ALS. “Marvelous Museums Week” kicked off with a trip to the Kansas Aviation Museum. The follow-ing days were filled with trips to the Sports Hall of Fame Museum, Museum of World Treasures and even a trip to Hutchinson to check out the Kansas Cosmosphere. “Wild Things Week” included a trip to Great Plains Nature Center and Sedgwick County Park to feed the ducks. The program also regularly attended the YMCA for exer-cise on Mondays, enjoyed coffee out in the community each Tuesday morn-ing and delivered Meals on Wheels on Wednesdays. Everyone attended the Annual Wichita River Festival. The program enjoyed picnic lunches while listening to the lunchtime concerts. On the 21st a group took a trip to All Star Sports where they enjoyed minia-ture golf, go cart rides and the arcade. Towards the end of the month ALS ac-cepted a special invitation to attend a Wichita Wingnuts baseball game. A small group enjoyed cool treats one hot afternoon at Dairy Queen, while another group devoured Shish Ka Bobs for lunch at the ARC’s “Lunch Bunch” on the 15th. One group hit some ga-rage sales one Friday morning and ev-eryone enjoyed a picnic lunch together at Cessna Park on the 24th. The wom-en in the program went out shopping at K-Mart one morning, then enjoyed

lunch and conversation together af-terwards at McDonalds. Other places visited in June included DAV, Braums, Target, Wal-Mart, the Indian Center, Krispy Kreme, CiCi’s Pizza, and Alford Library. The ALS program continues to work on personal goals with the per-sons served. Some are learning to use the microwave, some are learning to do laundry and others work on their communication skills. Several individ-uals have goals to increase their daily physical activity.

The Encore program spent a lot of time indoors in June due to

the excessive heat. Before it got too hot outside, the program did get a chance to attend the River Festival. The individuals enjoyed wandering around looking at different activities going on, listening to the lunchtime concerts, people watching and having lunch in the Food Court. Encore took a day trip on the 21st to Tanganyika Wildlife Park. Everyone brought a sack lunch, and they wandered around to watch the dif-ferent animals. They were all fascinated with the baby penguins that loved the attention the seniors gave them and came very close to everyone. Towards the end of the month the program at-tended a Wichita Wingnuts game and one individual had a ball yelling “Strike! You’re out of here!” While in the center the program practiced for the Talent Show on a daily basis. They did some reading, some cooking, played Bingo and painted. Everyone participated in a patriotic craft project to celebrate July 4th. The program also spent some of their days working on a fire truck model and singing karaoke. Other places visited in June included Menards, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, DAV, Dollar Tree, and Dillons. The seniors have welcomed

Community Connections began the month by attending the

Wichita River Festival. They had lunch in the Food Court and watched the Wichita Children’s Theatre produc-tion of “Chicken Little” at Century II. Throughout the month of June the program also went shopping at Town West and bowling at the Alley. On the 27th a group set out for morn-ing coffee at Kings X restaurant. Each Thursday some of the individuals exercised at the YMCA. Mid-month a group went to play Lunar Golf and had a great time. The program continues to deliver Meals on Wheels and volun-teer at Open Door. While in the center individuals served in Community Con-nections learned about menu plan-ning, money skills and housekeeping. They had a spelling bee, played UNO, Bingo and other games, and reviewed flash cards. The program also started some scrapbooking and played some dance games on the Wii. Several quiet afternoons included popcorn and a movie and the program continues on with the Harry Potter saga. Most mornings were spent exercising and some afternoons spent talking about hygiene and beauty. Everyone enjoyed an outing to Sedgwick County Park one afternoon and the program did lots of different craft projects and patriotic activities throughout the month of June.
