SUMMER SEASON 2020 from June 11 to October 25

Dear Waldhaus Guests

The world at large may often seem far away here in Sils, but we are very much a part of it. Against the background of the ever more drastic measures that our national and state governments, together with much of the world, have had to impose to stem the spread of the corona virus, we, too, decided with a heavy heart to bring a brilliant winter season to a sudden,

early close as of March 16, five weeks earlier than planned. Not since 1914 has a Waldhaus season ended so abruptly.

What’s next? Inevitably, there are many uncertainties. But it would be a great pity to simply put all plans on hold now, don’t you agree? As you can see, we have a splendid program in place for summer. What about your plans?

And through it all, how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful place! The enclosed card reminds us of it. With plenty of crises of their own, the generations who preceded us luckily never lost sight of that. Their efforts and foresight prevented Lake Sils from being turned into a dammed-up reservoir and kept the lake shores and much of the Fex Valley and plains of Sils free from

construction. Reverence and gratitude for this enchanted inheritance continue to determine our own actions.

We eagerly look forward to sharing our good fortune with you once more – ready to respond with calm and flexibility if, in the end, any of our plans or yours need to be adjusted.

UP AND AWAY

For every summer and autumn guest staying two nights or more, a free Waldhaus pass to the cable cars and chair lifts as well as for public transportation in the Upper Engadine and

Bregalia Valley. And free rides with Europe’s highest scheduled motorboat on Lake Sils.

THE LONGER, THE MERRIER!

Everyone who cumulatively spends more than ten nights at the Waldhaus in the same year receives a personal discount of

10% for the 11th and all following nights. This discount rises to 20% on the 21st night and thereafter. Our year starts in

December and goes to the end of the following summer season; the discount does not carry over from one year to the next. In summer and autumn, such discounts kick in after 4 days and 9 days already, i.e. 10% on the fifth and all following

nights, 20% on the 10th night and thereafter.

MATTERS CULINARY

Book our half-pension arrangement when you make your reservation. Start your day with our

generous breakfast buffet.

After an eventful day, enjoy a five-course menu that changes every day and includes several choices in our handsome dining room. Our wine steward will be pleased to suggest the perfect

accompanying wines.

Whenever possible, our kitchen crew focuses on regional and seasonal products. Our regional partners help us ensure a

dining experience that will long be remembered.

Engadine, it’s up to you. The Waldhaus offers accompanied hikes with our certified hiking guide from Monday to Friday.

MOUNTAIN BIKES AND ELECTRO BIKESThe Engadine is the perfect place for a wide range of

bike tours, with the marked mountain bike routes offering something for everyone. Do you want to cruise down a gentle hillside, or challenge yourself on a steep mountain trail? Our two-wheel fans are spoiled for choice. Our guests can rent

mountain bikes or electro bikes from the hotel.

TENNIS AND MINI-GOLFTwo outdoor clay courts (free for Waldhaus guests) and our

own indoor court. Would you like to learn to play, or improve your game? Take lessons from our tennis pro Franz Maschler. For those who would like to take it easier, how about a round

of miniature golf in the larch forest?

Waldhaus guests have free access to the entire Waldhaus Spa. The spa level and gym are only open to guests who are

at least 14 years old.

CULTURE

The cultural scene at the Waldhaus covers a broad spectrum. Along with the daily musical entertainment, two and sometimes

even three events are held each week.

We are pleased to support this offering also thanks to our guests and performing artists. Our commitment to culture is

one thing. Another is the support of a young foundation based on a long-cherished idea of Felix Dietrich and his family: the “Stiftung für Kultur im Waldhaus” to promote culture and the

people who stand behind it. Cultural events which are not just seen and heard at the Waldhaus alone, but to which

June 11–14. Sils Tourism presents the twenty-first Hesse Days in Sils at the Waldhaus – devoted this time to a single novel, “Narcissus and Goldmund”, which has just been made

into a film for the very first time. The program includes talks and panel discussions, a musical tale and, of course, director

Stefan Ruzowitzky’s film.

June 15. “Devienne’s Madness”. A musical reading with Alain Claude Sulzer about the composer and bassoonist François

Devienne, who died at age 43 in the Charenton insane asylum. Two bassoon quartets with bassoonist Benedikt Schobel and

members of the Basel Symphony Orchestra.

June 17. Welte-Mignon: Urs Kienberger and Guido Schmidt demonstrate our player piano from 1910.

June 18–26. SRF Kulturclub. Veteran Swiss radio personality Arthur Godel again presents six four-day Readers’ Circles for members of SRF2 Kulturclub, divided into two groups in June

and four groups in the autumn (see Sept. 23).

June 19. SRF Kulturclub: a Beethoven concert with the Guarneri Trio Prague at the village church.

June 20. SRF Kulturclub: Josef Schaaf’s “Trotta” (G, 1971), a film based on Joseph Roth’s “The Emperor’s Tomb”.

June 20. Jazz in the bar – piano for four hands with

Stephanie Trick from Missouri & Paolo Alderighi from Milan.

June 21–27. “Chanter in allegria”, a Patric Ricklin choir retreat. A week of studying and performing Romansch and

June 24. SRF Kulturclub: concert with Fabio di Càsola (clarinet) and Benjamin Engeli (piano) at the village church.

June 25. SRF Kulturclub: “Vor der Morgenröte” (G, 2016). Maria Schrader’s film tells the story of Austrian writer

Stefan Zweig’s life in exile in Brazil.

June 27–28. “The Alps for dinner”. graubündenVIVA, the Graubünden Institute for Cultural Studies and Institute for

Social Anthropology and Empirical Studies at the University of Zurich, invite you to a polyphonic symposium

on alpine cooking.

June 28. “Sacred Mount Kailash – a journey to the roof of the world”. After some 40 years, Vanessa Ölz returns to Tibet,

land of snow, and circumnavigates the Kailash.

June 28–July 4. Cooking & wine seminar in a small group with our Executive Chef Gero Porstein, Pastry Chef Renato

Pellegrinelli and Wine Steward Oscar Comalli.

June 29. Piano recital. Per Lundberg with Beethoven’s

Piano Sonatas No. 26 (“Les adieux”) and No. 32. A gift from an American guest, as a decades-long tradition continues.

July 1. Strong male voices from the Ukraine. The a-cappella “Orpheus” octet impresses with hymns from Orthodox liturgy

and Ukrainian folk songs.

July 5–11. Choral week with Rudolf Lutz and Antonia Frey – unfortunately already fully booked, but the following

July 13. The Welte-Mignon and the Theremin: a brief encounter of two very unlikely musical contemporaries, our player piano from 1910 and the world’s earliest electronic

instrument (invented in 1920).

July 20–24. Eighth Nietzsche workshop in Sils-Maria (at the Waldhaus, July 22: “Musical Inspirations” an evening

July 22. Family day for all ages. “In the footsteps of Giacometti and the confectioners”. The Dietrich and

Kienberger family issues a personal invitation to all Waldhaus guests to come and explore the Bregaglia Valley.

July 24. New-York based Dutch author Arnon Grunberg reads from his novel “Muttermale” (Birthmarks).

July 26. Claudio Danuser: an artistic conversation with Vesselina Kasarova (mezzosoprano). Part of the Engadine

Opera Forum (the successor to Opera St. Moritz).

July 27–31. Circus Week. Impressive magician’s tricks, juggling, astounding artistry and clowning around are the elements of a spectacular week. (For children aged 6–16.)

July 28. The Engadine Festival at the Waldhaus with pianist Alexandra Dovgan (*2007) – young, but already

an impressive talent.

Aug. 1. Switzerland’s national holiday: Swiss music with the “Ländlertrio Pius Baumgartner” on our terrace; a festive buffet at the hotel in the evening and a fine celebration on

the village square.

Aug. 6. Family day for all ages - at Danco Motti’s farm. The Dietrich and Kienberger family issues a personal

invitation to all Waldhaus guests to explore and enjoy the perfect spot for a picnic.

Aug. 9. The Origen Festival’s Commedia returns to the Waldhaus with music, humor, theater and stunts.

Sept. 13. “Babette’s Feast”. German actress Verena Buss slips into the role of master chef Babette and her guests in

an impressive solo performance based on the story by Tania Blixen.

Sept. 14. Swiss-German art songs from the romantic period: “Es trippelet und schnüüfelet”. Sybille Diethelm (soprano)

and Fabienne Romer (piano) with their husbands Basil Vollenweider and David Schwarb invite you on a voyage of

discovery to the forgotten land of art songs in Swiss dialect.
