It has been a truly remarkable year in the history of Humberston Maths and Computing College. We received the best possible grade from Ofsted in November 2010 which was an outstanding achievement from the situation we inherited 2 years ago. Our GCSE results for 2010 moved the College from performing in the 86 th percentile of schools nationally to the 8 th percentile, performing in the top 8% of schools. It was our ambition to achieve this in 3 years not 2! This achievement is a testament to excellent teaching and outstanding attitudes to learning by our students. When we return in September we will be Humberston Academy and the Lead Secondary School for the David Ross Education Trust. It is our aim to move forward and consistently produce GCSE results that are in the top 5% of schools nationally. Our Open Evening for Year 6 students is Thursday 8 September from 7.00pm – 9.00pm I hope you have a good summer. Congratulations! THE GREAT TOWER BUILD This year we introduced a new programme into the tutor time, to help develop some life based skills for all students. It focuses upon personal development around four competencies (TRICs): Teamwork, ability to Reflect, working as an Individual and being Creative. Over the last 6 weeks, each tutor group has been competing to build a freestanding tower from newspaper and sellotape only. It has been amazing to watch tutor groups really getting into this activity, wanting to beat other tutor groups to the prize of Tower Build Champion. It has been reported that some students were going back to add to their tower during their own time, and whilst not strictly within the rules, it has been a pleasure to see everyone so focused and wanting to develop skills they don’t always get the chance to utilise to such a level. Next year’s programme will follow a similar format with many more of these team building exercises included at more points throughout the year.

HUMBERSTON COLLEGE NEWS

JULY 2011 www.humberston-school.co.uk

Dear Parents/Carers

I would like to thank you for the support you have given us this academic year. It has been a

truly remarkable year in the history of Humberston Maths and Computing College.

We received the best possible grade from Ofsted in November 2010 which was an outstanding

achievement from the situation we inherited 2 years ago. Our GCSE results for 2010 moved the

College from performing in the 86th percentile of schools nationally to the 8th percentile, performing

in the top 8% of schools. It was our ambition to achieve this in 3 years not 2! This achievement

is a testament to excellent teaching and outstanding attitudes to learning by our students.

When we return in September we will be Humberston Academy and the Lead Secondary School

for the David Ross Education Trust. It is our aim to move forward and consistently produce

GCSE results that are in the top 5% of schools nationally.

Our Open Evening for Year 6 students is Thursday 8 September from 7.00pm – 9.00pm

I hope you have a good summer.

HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

We are pleased to announce that George Ramsey and Daisy Seddon have been selected as

Head Boy and Head Girl for the 2011 - 2012 Academic Year. Congratulations!

THE GREAT TOWER BUILD

This year we introduced a new programme into the tutor time, to help develop some life based

skills for all students. It focuses upon personal development around four competencies (TRICs):

Teamwork, ability to Reflect, working as an Individual and being Creative.

Over the last 6 weeks, each tutor group has been competing to build a freestanding tower from

newspaper and sellotape only. It has been amazing to watch tutor groups really getting into this

activity, wanting to beat other tutor groups to the prize of Tower Build Champion. It has been

reported that some students were going back to add to their tower during their own time, and

whilst not strictly within the rules, it has been a pleasure to see everyone so focused and wanting

to develop skills they don’t always get the chance to utilise to such a level. Next year’s

programme will follow a similar format with many more of these team building exercises included

at more points throughout the year.

PROM

The beautiful people of Humberston Maths and Computing College, both students and staff, were out in force on Friday 1 July to celebrate the Year 11 Prom. The event took place once again at the Oaklands Hotel whose sweeping drive, imposing facade and lovely gardens provided the perfect backdrop for the night. A variety of vehicles ranging from high performance sports cars to a fire engine delivered the students, all 'dressed to impress'. The girls, all manicured, tanned and coiffured, looked stunning in a glittering array of dresses . The boys, freshly scrubbed and gelled, looked impressive in their suits! The evening followed the usual tradition of a three-course meal followed by a disco. The students should be congratulated on their excellent behaviour throughout the evening and were a true credit to the College. Thanks go to all the staff who assisted during the evening, with a special mention to Mrs Daniel for all of her hard work. A CD with copies of the photographs taken at prom will be available to students on Results Day at a cost of £1. Orders MUST be placed with the College Office in advance.

MATHS CHALLENGE

On 1 July a selection of Year 7 and 8 students attended the Lindsey Oil Refinery Maths Challenge at Oasis Academy Wintringham. Both teams did very well. Year 7 came 6th and Year 8 came 7th. As always, our students were a credit to the College and to their parents. More importantly, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Next year’s event will take place here at Humberston Academy. We are awaiting confirmation of the date. TWENTY/20 CRICKET Twenty-six students and eight members of staff ventured to Trent Bridge in Nottingham, to watch Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire play in the Northern section of the Friends Provident Twenty/20 League. Students took part in a Twenty/20 quiz and were given the opportunity to predict the number of 4s and 6s as well as the total score for the game. Nottingham chose to bat and posted a very competitive 188 runs, with Australian International David Hussey hitting 73 runs off 37 balls, which included five 6s. Just towards the end of the innings, the rain began which ultimately led to the abandonment of the match, much to everybody’s disappointment. An earlier return to school than had been expected was the only consolation of the early finish. The Year 7 boys were particularly disappointed with the postponement as they were on their first trip and celebrated every boundary with enthusiastic flag-waving celebrations (flags obtained for free by the smooth-talking Mr Womersley). Mr Womersley won the quiz, and the winning student team comprised Ryan Harrison, Reece Holberry and Callum Carter. Bradley Blastland correctly guessed five 6s in the match, Jordan Graves got the correct number of 4s and Alex Gibbon was closest to the total runs scored, with a guess of 196. All of the prize-winners were helped considerably by the fact that only one innings took place but maybe they had looked closely at the weather forecast! Here’s hoping for better weather for next year’s trip to Trent Bridge.

PE

This term has been a very busy one for the PE Department with many extra-curricular sports happening each week. Two of our Rounders Teams have performed this term. Year 9 and Year 10 who finished 4th out of ten schools. Excellent performances from Elva-Kate Preston and Niamh Tuplin, in Year 9 and Danielle Gorrod, Danielle Fenty, Amy Strachan and George Ramsay in Year 10. The boys have had cricket matches galore this term. The Year 7/8 team performed really well, reaching the semi-final of the Lord’s Taverners Cup and the same stage of the County Cup. If their final game on 13 July goes well, they should win the Local League. Special mention to Callum Carter and Ryan Kirk with the bat and Harry Smith, Ryan Kirk, Jack Rodwell and Brad Blastland for excelling with the ball. The Year 10 Cricket Team has also excelled and is on course to win the John Turner Trophy. Outstanding performances from Ryan Harrison and Chris Burgess with the bat and Ryan Harrison and Reece Holberry with the ball. The District Athletics Championships went well. We gained third position in the Year 8 boys’ and the Year 7/8/9 girls' competitions and finished second in the percentage trophies for both the girls and boys. This gave us an overall finishing position of fourth. Outstanding performances came from our ‘throwers’ with most of them winning their events, thanks to the expert coaching of Mr Todd. Notable track performances came from Harry Clifton who won the 800m by at least 50m and Katie Brentnall who broke the District Record for the 800m taking 2.4 seconds off the previous record, recording a new time of 2.31:2. An amazing feat. Next year will see a big change in many of the sports, especially football, rugby, cross country and athletics with a new two tier league system operating with relegation and promotion. To tie in with this we are going to hold a Sports Fair at the start of the new term. Students can sign up for any sport but must commit to putting in 100% effort into all practices and games. This should give us every chance of collecting lots of silverware. Thank you for your support over the last academic year and please continue to help us and encourage your son/daughter to train and perform regularly for the College.

Mr Pollard, President of the District FA and ESFA committee member, came into assembly to present Max and Harry with their trophies. Once again, well done to both boys On a similar theme, Josh Seddon in Year 11, was part of the successful Humberside under 16 Football Team who won the ESFA National Trophy for County Associations. This is only the third time that a Humberside team has won a National Trophy. The College are delighted with Josh’s success and wish him well in the future. Many congratulations to the following students who have represented Lincolnshire County at Cricket: Callum Carter (Under 13),Ryan Kirk (Under 13) Ryan Harrison (Under 15A) and Reece Holberry (Under 15B).

Harry Clifton and Max Wright, (pictured right) are members of the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Under 13 Football Team who won the Midlands Division of the ESFA Inter-District Competition.

This is the first time for 34 years that a team from Grimsby have won this competition - a fantastic effort. Both Harry and Max were regular starters for the team and the college are very proud of their efforts and achievements.

Blouses/Shirts Girls may choose to wear a blouse with a revere collar and Academy scarf or a white shirt (top button fastened) and Academy tie. The shirt must have the top button fastened.

Skirts Parents and guardians are respectfully reminded that the length of skirt worn must be appropriate to the environment and should comply with our uniform policy. Please note that students wearing skirts of unsuitable length will be asked to buy another.

Andrew Green (Year 8) recently visited Downing Street to deliver a letter to the Prime Minister. Andrew with the support of his family, is protesting about the cuts to the Legal Aid Budget. Andrew’s family used the Legal Aid system to bring action for Medical Negligence at Andrew’s birth. The success of their action enabled the family to move to more suitable accommodation and Andrew says it was also central to him learning how to walk.

Andrew has now become the spearhead in the campaign and has featured on TV (BBC and Channel 4) and in the press, his story can be found all over the internet and has even been noted in America (small mention in Forbes) and Canada. OLYMPIC TORCH NOMINATIONS Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated to carry the Olympic Torch when it comes to our area next year: Andrew Green, Connor Tucker and Lewis Tucker. Good Luck!
