As the sun begins to burn a bit more brightly, scorching the air and drawing the sweat

from your pores, Ventura County entreats you to get up, get out and experience summer as Southern California intended. There are an endless number of events and activities to scour over selective-ly each year. How do you decide which to partake in? Even amid the glory of the sunny summer months, far too many of us know

the shame and guilt of succumb-ing to sluggish inactivity behind the comfort of closed doors. Either that, or we simply put off new experiences, reasoning that all Ventura County has to offer will still be there next year. Well, next year is here and with it a fool-proof list that features our Top 10 essential summer experiences that simply can’t be overlooked or postponed a moment longer.

Under the seaVentura County’s coastline boasts some of the most beau-tiful waters on the planet.

Composed of kelp forests, under-water mountain ranges, vibrant marine life and dramatic sea-scapes, it is a spot that draws div-ers worldwide. For a truly unfor-gettable summer experience, hit up Channel Islands Scuba and get certified. Offering small classes, instructors are able to provide an intimate training experience and produce compe-tent divers. Scuba diving — for those who do it — is more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. This is an often-overlooked experience that allows you to appreciate Ventura County and its surrounding

waters from an entirely new perspective. Visit http://www.cisdivers.com.

round. Departing from both the Ventura and Channel Islands har-bors, these excursions cruise to and around the renowned Channel Islands. Nothing compares to the first time you see the hulking back of a gray whale as it breaks through the surface waters with

an explosion of sea spray. The sensation of gliding through the ocean alongside a pod of frolick-ing dolphins is equally stunning. Island Packers also offers kayak tours, camping and hiking trips. Visit www.islandpackers.com/ or call 642-1393.

CatCh of the dayFor an alternative style of water recreation, head inland to the tranquil waters of beautiful Lake Casitas. Known as one of the pre-mier fishing spots in the region, Casitas is famous for its world-class bass fishing. The lake is filled with largemouth bass, red ear sunfish, rainbow trout, bluegill and channel catfish. There’s nothing to deter the fish from biting here, where swim-ming, jet and water skiing are not permitted. Sitting atop the smooth blue expanse of the lake accompa-nied by scenic views of the Ojai Valley is an enticing escape from urban chaos. Visit www.casitaswa-ter.org or call 805-649-2233.

take a hike (or ride)For those seeking a more terres-trial experience, the Santa Monica Mountains make up a unique national park offering several ways

to appreciate Southern California’s nature and wildlife. There are a variety of bike trails, which weave through diverse terrain from ridge tops to canyon floors. Whether you want to cruise leisurely along an oak-lined stream or tackle a tough ascent that treats you to breathtak-ing ocean views, there are many opportunities for a great ride. The park offers many hiking trails of

varying degrees of difficulty. The Rocky Oaks Trail — great for hik-ers of all abilities — offers relax-ation, picnicking by a nearby pond, wooded areas and grasslands: whereas the extensive Backbone Trail — a work in progress that has been pieced together over the years — consists of multiple starting points and currently covers more than 60 miles. Families can come to camp, ride horses or even just explore the terrain for wildflowers. The Santa Monica Mountains offer everyone the chance to embark on an outdoor adventure. Visit www.nps.gov/samo/index.htm.

Giddyap!Answer the call of you inner cowboy and come experience the beautiful Ojai Valley on horseback. Western Trail Rides offers a variety of experiences, from group classes and camps to private trail rides, custom pri-vate lessons and birthday par-ties. Hiking and bird watcHingThe beauty of hiking is that you don’t need anything but feet (though a bottle of water is nice) in order to get going. But you do need to know where to go. The definitive guidebook is #Day Hikes in Ventura County, California: 43 of the Best# by Robert Stone, published by Day Hike Books Inc. Sometimes it’s nice to share the trail, and a number of organizations can help you do just that. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy offers a variety of activities and events. Bird watching enthusiasts can contact the Ventura Audubon Society at 642-1585 or visit www.venturaaudubon.org.
