Mr. Skipwith’s Address to the Class of 2011 What a true blessing it is to be here with you all this morning. We are here today in celebration of the great accomplishments, the great gifts, and the promising future that these young men and women before us bring, and I thank everyone here today for your attendance at this most joyous occasion. Thank you to the Most Reverend Archbishop Charles Chaput & Auxiliary Bishop James Conley. Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mr. Richard Thompson. Faculty, Staff and Administration. And thank you especially to the parents of our graduates; for your unwavering support, selfless sacrifice, and sound investment in your children’s futures and the future of the Catholic Church!

However, more importantly, I would like to say thank you to our guests of honor this morning. To the graduates of the Class of 2011. You are truly a remarkable group of students who have excelled in your varied endeavors over the course of the past four years. You have excelled and achieved intellectually, athletically, socially and in your service to your fellow man. And as a result – most importantly - you have excelled in your faith life. It is with great admiration and hope that I can say that I am truly proud of the loving faithful that you have become. As you have heard on so many occasions throughout your time at Machebeuf, “you are called to be saints”.

Take a moment to see the person sitting to your left and to your right. Now I know you have spent countless hours together outside of school. However, for just a moment, I want you to reflect on your journey with these friends you have made for life during your time spent in school. Dances, sporting events, intellectually stimulating courses, and exams. But more importantly, reflect for a just moment on the gift that you have had to share time with one another in Mass, adoration, doxology and praying the rosary. The sacraments are given freely from above in order that you may each desire fully the fervent pursuit of heaven, truth and all that is intrinsically good. You have certainly been exposed to, and have begun to develop, the skills of effective communication and problem solving; of working collaboratively to solve problems within a system that is becoming a global network of humanity; of taking the initiative to appease the appetite of your curiosity and vast imaginations…these are wonderful skills. However, to nurture and develop the gifts of the Holy Spirit -- This is what it means to receive a Catholic education.

You have learned about the history of mankind from a Christ-centered perspective. You have learned that the human person, from conception to natural death, is a creature with a natural desire and affinity for God. You have entered into a transformation within yourselves that has you longing to seek, know and love God eternally in one another through authentically shared life experiences.

You have received the gift of a Catholic education! Catholic schools are so much more than buildings of bricks and mortar. They are living, breathing entities that are inspired by a supernatural vision. They are founded on a Christian anthropology where it is believed that each one of you is created in the image and likeness of God and has been willed into being for a purpose. They are animated by communion and community where there is a warm and intimate atmosphere of family. The Catholic school is a preserver of Catholic culture where a Catholic worldview per-meates the hearts, minds and souls of its students. It is now your privilege, your right, and your responsibility to take this life experience and share it with the world. In the midst of a world that currently sees so many challenges, He has trusted you with this time, with the obstacles you will face, and He has promised that you will not be alone. He has shared with us that we are not to be afraid.

Although this is no easy task, you will leave here today men and women who are called to share these life experiences with all who you encounter. To evangelize the world, share your faith and to do this as a living example of the man, Jesus Christ, who you have come to know and love. Yes - you will be seen as different. Not so much in the eccentric sense of the word; but rather in a truly foundational way. One Church, One Body – Universal Truth.

So, to the class of 2011. I say thank you. Thank you for the gift of being your individual selves. Thank you for your courage to live and protect life! Congratulations on this milestone in your lives and may God Bless you always.

Bitter-sweet was a common word shared amongst the senior class the

last few months at Machebeuf. It was a word that the seniors understood the full meaning of on Saturday, May 21 at

the University of Denver as they gathered together as a class for the

final time. On a beautiful, sunny, spring morning as all watched the seniors in the midst of their joy at

completing high school and in their sorrow to part with so many people

that have grown to love, one thing was certain; no one could really believe

it. Students could hardly believe that the time went by so fast; parents could hardly believe that their children were old enough to graduate; and teachers

could not believe that the same freshman that they once thought of

as so juvenille were walking across the stage to receive their diplomas. As the 95 graduating seniors leave the doors of Machebeuf and spread out across the country and around the world, it is our hope at Bishop Machebeuf

High School, that they know they will be missed, that they know that they

have touched our lives even more than we have touched theirs and that they leave our doors prepared to engage the world around them. Good luck

In the tradition of our faith and in the recognition that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, the graduating class of 2011, faculty and staff of BMHS and family and friends all gathered together with Bishop James Conley, Auxiliary Bishop of Denver, to celebrate the 2011 Baccalaureate Mass. The Baccalaureate Mass is a longstanding Catholic tradition which reminds us of one of the core values of our faith; as Blessed John Paul II put it, “Faith and Reason are the two wings upon which the human person rises to the contemplation of truth.” As a special treat, Deacon Joe Babish, the father of seniorDaniel Babish, was able to serve as the Deacon, and we were blessed to have Fr. Jorge Aguera and Fr. Jim Crisman join us for the liturgy as well. Congratulations to all of our graduates and may God continue to watch over you.

The theme for the 2011 Junior-Senior Prom was Masquerade and the event was held at Red Rocks Park and Ampitheatre. With the theme being “Mas-querade,” many students arrived with masks to match their beautiful dresses and sharp tuxedos. Following the dance, the Parent’s As- sociation hosted After-Prom in the Machebeuf commons. After-Prom was quite an event as the Ma- chebeuf gym and commons

were transformed into a virtual play- ground. Students had their choice of playing arcade games in the commons such as NBA Jam and Cruisin’ USA, as well as pinball, air hockey, Guitar-Hero and many other games. If they weren’t doing that, they were free to enjoy the inflatables in the gym which featured sumo-wrestling, bull-riding, log-running, obstacle courses and many more. If they were feeling more like relaxing, they were free to just dance and enjoy the music, all while feasting on the food and drinks provided by the Parent Association. Thank you to the many people who made this year’s prom successful, safe and enjoyable! We are grateful!

Evening of EntertainmentAn

Bishop Machebeuf High School presented their annual spring show,

”An Evening of Entertainment,” on April 15, 2011. As always, the evening showcased seasoned talent and

shining new stars. The Machebeuf Singers started off the program with

a Swahili number and then continued on with a mixture of classical songs.

Some of our newest participants who wowed the audience musically were

senior Tyranisha Homes, and sophomores Angeli Mata and Jack Corriere. The comedic skits in the

second half of the show were led by Senior Tim McDermott, whose

“controlling” character was stuck in an elevator. The audience seemed to

appreciate the sense of humor portrayed by the Drama students, but

none more than the moment in “Jogaholics” when senior Daniel Babish

tore off his warm-up jersey pants displaying a jogging outfit

underneath, and then ran out into the crowd. The evening concluded with

cheers from a packed house.

Junior Ring MassThe Junior Ring Mass was held at Machebeuf on May 25. At this Mass, the juniors receive their class rings after the rings are blessed. The Mass serves as a “commissioning” of the juniors as they step into their new role as the leaders of BMHS. Congratulations to all of our juniors!

Working at Bishop Machebeuf High School is a calling and ministry for our faculty and staff. Non-profits, particularly those within the church, are not known for high-paying positions. Our faculty and staff not only

give of their time, going the extra mile in so many cases, but also of their treasure. We recently conducted a Capital Campaign drive here among our faculty and staff, and challenged them to achieve 100%

participation. Within 6 weeks, ALL 46 EMPLOYEES had donated to the Capital Campaign! Donating to one’s own workplace may be

a foreign idea to some, but not here in our Machebeuf family. When asked why she donated to the Capital Campaign, Mrs. Tuyet Nguyen, Assistant Principal, shared, “If you are in this community, you need to

contribute what you can to the common goal. It just comes naturally to give.” We are truly blessed and amazed by

your dedication and generosity. Thank you all!

Catholic Schools Art Show at BMHSThis year Bishop Machebeuf High School hosted the annual Catholic Schools Art Show. We hosted over 25 schools, Pre K- 12 grade, each bringing 20 pieces of artwork from students across the city. Pieces displayed

included paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, and clay pieces. Judges Lynn Countryman from Regis University and the Dominican Vocation Foundation and Rich Florence from Clear Channel Communication and Chicago Tribune awarded prizes for outstanding work. Machebeuf students presented fantastic art work and the following students placed in the following categories: Adam Clarke- 1st Place, Non-Functional

Ceramics; Adrienne Mata- 2nd Place, Value Drawing; Daniel Babish- 2nd Place, Sculpture; 2nd Place- Non- Functional Ceramics; Yohan Chang- 3rd Place, Painting; Skylyn Borne- 3rd Place, Functional Ceramics.

We are proud of all of our students and their phenomenal creativity and craftsmanship.

My EscapeI get dizzy as life speeds by. Can’t it stop?I look down to take a break. I am engulfed in my book. Soft pages crinkle as I turn them. A musty smell wafts up. I am now living someone else’s life, temporarily. I am swept away, like a knight riding a dragon into the sunset. I will live this mythical adventure; it is my own. The story is my friend; the book, my treasure box.All of a sudden, I am jolted out of my journey.Like falling off a cliff, I slam back into reality.Later, I will finish, but for now, I am thrown back into the speeding

present.

PianoI can see my reflection on the polished face of the piano.My shaggy black hair frizzes out away from my pale skin,blending in with the minute scratches on its face.I cannot cease to wonder at the power of the many keys,that if combined correctly, unlock people’s hearts.The first resonating note pierces the airwith an almost sharp suddenness that bespeaks its potential power.While it still reverberates in the air, another joins it,you begin to see the composer’s vision–As you sit there, a masterpiece is painted on the white canvas of the

still atmosphere.

Brain WavesNever to be filled, cannot be emptied, my mind the ocean, reaches

and creates its own borders.My thoughts, the waves push, pull, tugging my attention this way

and that.Through the waves my memories, tangled, entwined, half-forgotten

seaweed.Then snapping crabs, angry claws, doubts, fighting the waves

pinching them furiously, steadfast to not be swept away.A lonely ship, my ideas, sail through the vast ocean fishing for the

best thoughts throwing back the half-imagined beliefs.Without warning, a hurricane forcefully dashes the waves against the

rocks, challenges the thoughts trying to smash them.But like the ocean, the sun rises with calm relaxed tides.

Poetry to Go is a contest for teens thirteen through nineteen in the Denver Metro region. Winning poems are displayed inside RTD buses for three months. Poem placards appear on 800 buses. Additionally, winners receive a copy of Poetry to Go, featuring winning poems in 2011.

Poetry to Go is a project of the Poetry Society of Colorado. The contest began in 2000 as a project to showcase the dignity and creativity of teens.

Lenten Penance Service

Proud Parents in Biology

This year, the Lenten Penance service was held at BMHS on

April 15. At this service, priests from all over the diocese come

to Machebeuf to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. At

this Lenten penance service, over one-third of the student body received this sacrament. While confessions take place,

the entire student body gathers for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the commons.

Thank you to all our priests who make this possible!

In what has become one of the science department’s most beloved traditions, and most effective teaching tools, science teachers Mrs. Fuller and Ms. Peterson guided students as they hatched, fed and raised ducks, chickens, and turkeys. The birds incubate in the classrooms and students must monitor their temperature and development. Once they are born, students care for them, feed them and walk them, all while monitoring their growth, their heart rates and their development. It’s a wonderful learning experience that is enjoyed by all.


Student Council 2011-2012

This spring, teens from Denver are receiving the Gold Award, thehighest award in Girl Scouts. BMHS junior Cayla Harris is one of only six girls from Denver to receive this award. All winners have demon-strated exceptional dedication to the Girl Scout Law’s commitment to “making the world a better place” through their community service.

“Cheers for Cheerleaders”Cayla’ s brother suffers from cerebral palsy. For her Gold Award project, she helped children with special needs by holding a cheerleading clinic for them. Cayla has cheered since age 8.

Cayla recruited volunteers from her cheer team at Machebeuf and set up a clinic where she taught nine girls and nine boys dances and cheers. Campers also got to play games, and she secured donations for food for the camp. Due to the success of the first clinic, Cayla plans to hold another cheer clinic. It is her hope that Machebeuf will continue the tradition in the future.

“It was the first time I had planned an event by myself,” said Cayla. “I had to be really organized, and I learned that I can manage my time. The campers really enjoyed the clinic. They smiled throughout the day. Later I visited the schools of those who attended my camp, and they remembered me and wanted to perform all the cheers that they learned.”

Bishop Machebeuf High School’s baseball complex has been voted High School Baseball Field of the Year by the Colorado

Dugout Club. The Colorado Dugout Club’s Board of Directors and membership is made up of high school baseball

coaches throughout the State of Colorado. Criteria used for selecting the Field of the Year include the availability of facili-ties for players and spectators, the condition of the field and surrounding baseball complex, and the overall presentation

of the field. The presentation of this prestigious award will be made at a yet to be determined Colorado Rockies game this summer. This award would not have been possible without

the hard work and dedication of Machebeuf’s coaches, players and parents, who give countless hours of their time and talent

to help maintain Machebeuf’s baseball complex.

So, the world didn’t end on May 21st. We do know how-ever that June 3 will be the end... maybe not the end of the world, but the end of another school year at Machebeuf.

Now, there’s an old saying that goes like this, “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” No, not in the American Idol sense, that’s I-D-O-L. I’m talking about I-D-L-E. It means nothing is going on. When you put your car in idle (or neutral) it just sits there. So, to rephrase the old saying, “A bored person who is doing nothing and has nothing going on is prime real-estate for the devil to tempt.”

OnethingIloveaboutworkinginahighschoolisthesummer.WhatIlovespecificallyaboutthesummeristhat I have so much free time... and that’s why the devil likes my summer too. He knows that idleness presents a great opportunity. Free time, while it is restful and relaxing, can also creat laziness and idleness. Laziness and idleness can lead to neglect and, as we all know, when we neglect something, whether it be a house, a relationship or our spiritual lives, it begins to fall apart. Take some advice from the wisdom of scripture, “When hands are lazy, the house collapses; when hands are slack, the house leaks.” (Ecclesiastes 10:18)

ThishasbeenabusyyearforMachebeufstudents.Theirtimehasbeenfilledwithmanypositiveactivities.Studies, athletics, clubs, theology classes, class retreats, school Masses, adoration, Bible studies and friends, family and teachers to help them through all sorts of challenges. Once summer starts, most of those things stop.

So, the question is, “How do we live out our faith over the summer with all of this free time on our hands?”

Thefirstanswerissimpleandifyou’vebeenpayingattentionyoushouldknowit.DON’T BE IDLE! If you’re sitting around doing nothing all summer, you’re asking for trouble. “Laziness plunges a man into deep sleep, and the idle soul will go hungry.” (Proverbs 19:1)

The second answer is this... BE PRACTICAL. Don’t just say, “I’m going to pray over the summer.” That’s great, but that’s like saying, “I’m going to win state next year.” Nice thought, but how are you going to do it? When are you going to pray? In the morning when you wake up? Before you go to sleep? Are you going to pray every day? For how long each day? What are you going to pray? Where are you going to pray? Are you going to read the Bible? What are you going to read from the Bible? You’re not going to win state by just saying it. You’re not going to pray by just saying it. You’re only going to do both of those things by setting measurable goals and by living up to them.

Finally, DON’T DO IT ALONE! The most famous military strategy in the world is to divide and conquer, be-cause if you can get someone alone, it’s easier to defeat them. The devil does the same thing. If he can get you away from people who will support your faith, it’s much easier for him. Stay close to people who will help you. Go to Mass with your friends. Just hang out with people that you know are going to be good for you.

Building on a Tradition of Excellence Capital CampaignThe Building on a Tradition of Excellence Capital Campaign is in full swing here at Bishop Machebeuf High School! By now, you have received information on the campaign funds and a commitment form to complete and return. Our goal is to have 100% parent participation, but we know that every family has different giving capacities. Though we certainly ask that your gift be made after careful consideration, please know that your gift amount is secondary to just the fact that you give! We will be announcing Capital Campaign participants in future newsletters and the annual report. Please be among those who support the Capital Campaign!

What is the Capital Campaign? The Capital Campaign funds major campus expenditures, programs and an endowment. The funding for these areas is not covered by tuition. The four funds identified for this Campaign are Facilities Improvements, Information Technology Upgrades, Strategic Operating Support, and the Financial Aid and Scholarship Endowment.

Why is a Capital Campaign necessary?In 2007, BMHS conducted a feasibility study with various community members to determine the school’s greatest areas of need that could not be readily addressed through tuition dollars. The four funding areas will provide for Machebeuf to remain competitive with other schools in the areas of technology, facilities, programs and tuition assistance. Tuition alone can not cover all of the upgrades, repairs and financial aid that we need. If we were to include the $2.5 million needed into tuition, our tuition would increase by $6,850 per student. Therefore, a charitable tax deductible annual fund gift gives the best opportunity for all to support our vision for the future at Machebeuf.

Who is being asked to participate?All constituencies will be asked to make a capital campaign gift: Faculty, staff, board members, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends. In fact, 100% of our faculty, staff and board of trustees have contributed to the Capital Campaign.

How can I contribute?Contributions can be made as a one-time gift. Donors can also make a pledge commitment with payments over several months or even up to 5 years. Many donors are making small monthly payments in order to make their gift a sizable amount that they may not be able to make all at once.

Is my donation tax deductible?Yes! Gifts to the Capital Campaign are tax deductible to the fullest extent provided by law and may be made in the form of cash, check, credit card or stock transfer.

Why Me?At a time when there are many requests for your charitable dollar, you may ask: Why give to Machebeuf? The answer is twofold: BMHS is worth your additional investment because there is little that is worth more than a child’s Catholic education. Secondly, in a school with our unique mission, your gift to Machebeuf will truly make a difference in the life of our school and will live in the hearts of every student who walks through our doors .

Helping OthersFor the past two years, Geometry Teacher, Mr. Sullivan, has been taking collections in his math classes to loan to entrepreneurs around the world through the website kiva.org. As described on their website, “Kiva is a non-profit that is revolutionizing the fight against global poverty by enabling people to connect with and make personal loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world…Most of the poor in the developing countries are self-employed entrepreneurs and a small loan to purchase business-related items…can empower them to earn their way out of poverty.”

Here’s a brief update on our progress. Over the past 4 semesters we’ve collected roughly $700 from roughly 180 students When the loans we make are repaid to us, we’ve simply been reloaning the same money back to other entrepreneurs which has led to almost $1500 lent out over the past 2 years!

Seeds of Hope is a major contributor to Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Denver. They have funded over $20 million in tuition assistance to over 12,000 students over the past 15 years. To Bishop Machebeuf High School alone, seeds of hope has funded scholarships to the tune of $100,000 over the past 3 years! On June 10th, Seeds of Hope is hosting its annual Party, Peeps and Poker event to benefit Catholic Schools. The target audience for this event is all young philanthropists and the goal is to raise $60,000 for the students served by Seeds of Hope.

With dancing, food and drinks provided, a silent auction, and a large Texas Hold ‘Em tourna-ment, Party, Peeps & Poker will be a great opportunity to learn how Seeds of Hope has impacted the lives of inner city youth attending Catholic schools. We’ve also added a live performance painting/art show, a cork pull (grab bag fundraiser) and a chance to win an iPad. You won’t want to miss this year’s Party, Peeps & Poker!
