Delta Upsilon Beacon Dear Brothers, It is my pleasure to provide you with the spring/summer installment of our biannual newsletter. The chapter thrived during the 2014 spring semester as our members continued to be involved in a wide variety of activities and organizations. Our brothers’ presence on campus led to the recruitment and initiation of 18 new members, one of the largest pledge classes in the recent history of our chapter. The DU experience is alive and well. One of the chapter’s many accomplishments this year was the revival of our public Initiation Ceremony. The turnout was amazing and feedback about the ceremony was universally positive. We took the opportunity to honor Mark Parseghian ’49 for his tremendous support of our chapter and for providing those in attendance with an example of a model DU man. We also hosted a Building Better Men Weekend in which a representative from DU International came to lead our chapter in a self-evaluation process. We identified many of the difficulties that we face as a group and constructed solutions to those problems. We are confident that our efforts to improve the chapter will be evident in our Lehigh Accreditation rating, which will be released at the end of the summer. I hope that you are encouraged by the contents of this newsletter and can see that DU has continued to flourish at Lehigh. We hope that you have an opportunity to visit the chapter house in the future to meet the brothers and to share your memories with us. Delta Upsilon Beacon Dear Brothers,

It is my pleasure to provide you with the spring/summer

installment of our biannual newsletter. The chapter thrived during the

2014 spring semester as our members continued to be involved in a

wide variety of activities and organizations. Our brothers’ presence on

campus led to the recruitment and initiation of 18 new members, one

of the largest pledge classes in the recent history of our chapter. The

DU experience is alive and well.

One of the chapter’s many accomplishments this year was the

revival of our public Initiation Ceremony. The turnout was amazing

and feedback about the ceremony was universally positive. We took

the opportunity to honor Mark Parseghian ’49 for his tremendous

support of our chapter and for providing those in attendance with an

example of a model DU man.

We also hosted a Building Better Men Weekend in which a

representative from DU International came to lead our chapter in a

self-evaluation process. We identified many of the difficulties that we

face as a group and constructed solutions to those problems. We are

confident that our efforts to improve the chapter will be evident in our

Lehigh Accreditation rating, which will be released at the end of the

summer. I hope that you are encouraged by the contents of this

newsletter and can see that DU has continued to flourish at Lehigh.

We hope that you have an opportunity to visit the chapter house

in the future to meet the brothers and to share your memories with us.

“Good afternoon.

I’m Chad Paul, and it’s my pleasure

to welcome you all to the 130th Delta

Upsilon/Lehigh University annual

spring initiation ceremony! For

precisely half of those years, one

brother has served this Delta

Upsilon chapter with loyalty and

distinction. He has served as our

Alumni Corporation President since

1952. He spearheaded the fund-

raising effort to build our current

chapter house when our original

house no longer met local code

requirements. And when the money

was raised, he built the house, too!”

Building Better Men Retreat

On the weekend of March 21st, the Chapter participated in a special ‘Building Better Men’

retreat. A Senior Director of Educational Programming from Delta Upsilon International Headquarters

came to Lehigh and led the brotherhood in discussions and experiential activities over a three-day

period. At the pre-meeting held with the Chapter’s Executive Board, we outlined our primary goals of

examining our chapter, taking it to the next level, increasing the motivation, intellects and leadership

skills of our brothers.

Noah Borton, the trained facilitator from headquarters who led the retreat, helped the chapter

learn, be challenged, and discuss specific plans of action. We began with a discussion about values

instilled in each of our members by their respective loved ones and how those values relate to the Four

Founding Principles and fraternity life in general.

Building Better Men successfully communicated its important message that ‘Every member of

the chapter must assume the qualities of leadership: the ability to adapt to change, take charge when

necessary and accept responsibilities for one’s actions and decisions.’

The Building Better Men program was very well received by the over 50 brothers who

participated. We are continuously striving to improve communication and education and appreciate this

special resource, which was provided by Delta Upsilon International.

Regional Leadership Academy Philadelphia, PA

Presidents Academy Indianapolis, IN

The Presidents Academy is one of many leadership

education programs provided by Delta Upsilon

International Fraternity. It focuses on preparing

incoming chapter presidents for their role in the

fraternity and the challenges that they are likely to

face. It emphasizes values-based leadership to foster

change within a given chapter.

The most valuable lessons President Hershner

learned at the January program had to do with

increasing membership motivation and involvement.

We started by considering what exactly inspired each

of us as presidents to believe in the mission and values

of Delta Upsilon. We then identified areas of strength

and weakness within our respective chapters and

considered how we could apply personal

understanding of the values to making improvements

in chapter culture. Upon returning to Lehigh,

President Hershner held a chapter meeting to discuss

some of what he had learned from the program and

how he intended to apply it as our new chapter

President. -JH

Designed for chapter officers,

emerging leaders, and advisors, the Regional Leadership Academy

provided our six attendees with the

opportunity to develop leadership

skills and engage in specific training.

At our Northeast RLA, which was

held in February, approximately 15

DU chapters and colonies from the

Northeast region participated to learn

leadership skills and to better

themselves and their fraternity

chapters as a whole.

Throughout the weekend, we

attended a number of different

breakout sessions on different topics,

including those focused on

recruitment, loss prevention, and

managing conflict. The culmination

of the weekend was the creation of

our chapter’s plan for success for this

school year. It was then shared with

the rest of the brotherhood at a

chapter meeting.

Lassoing Leukemia For the second year, DU hosted a very

successful Lassoing Leukemia event in our

parking lot which raised funds for the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society.

The chapter partnered with Pi Kappa

Alpha (PIKE), and two sororities, Alpha

Omicron Pi and Pi Beta Phi, along with the

Lehigh After Dark program to rent a

mechanical bull and inflatable attractions. A

great time was had by all!

DU Philanthropy

Recent efforts to increase the

sustainability of the house include the

installation of new energy- efficient washing

machines and dryers in the house laundry

room when the previous ones needed

replacement.

We continue to recycle all cardboard,

plastic and cans and emphasized to our

newest members the importance of vigilance

in recycling.

Around The House

This fall we will be meeting with

Lehigh’s EcoReps to learn additional ways

we can improve sustainability and energy-

savings and become even more

environmentally sensitive.
