I recently had the opportunity to meet with a few political organizations that work for education reform in Texas. One person at the meeting was very close to Governor Perry and has a strong influence on education policy in the state. He asked me, “How do you recruit and retain great teachers?” I told him that what compels teachers to come and stay at schools is actually pretty simple: a compelling vision.

No teacher gets excited about the prospect of teaching students for the sake of assessing discreet information on high stakes testing. Even if they are paid more money, reducing teachers to mere technicians will never entice the great ones to come, nor provide sufficient motivation for the best to stay. Education “reform” is nothing of the sort if teachers are not inspired and motivated by a clear and compelling vision for their calling.

A compelling educational vision must include a clear purpose for why we teach, an ideal to pursue and a culture where kids and learning are loved. The vision that Covenant strives for is indeed captivating and inspiring! Education is about developing wise and virtuous men and women who know God and love learning.

The ideal stated in our Portrait of a Graduate invites parents, students and teachers to partner in a common purpose to love God, love others, reason wisely, embody virtue, delight in beauty, and engage the world with a Christ-centered worldview. The culture is marked by the love of learning for the sake of transformation, not for the sake of regurgitation. Teachers are valued as the embodied curricula, not passive facilitators. They are challenged to be worthy of imitation, to be the kind of persons our students can aspire to be.

One of the main purposes of the Areté publication is to bring Covenant’s vision to life, to show our readers what a Covenant education looks like, and to show the ways in which God is working through our school. I hope you see God’s abundant provision and the fruit of a vision inspired by a call to make Christ preeminent in all things. Thank you for your support and participation in making our vision a reality!

Congratulations!Class of 2014

The graduating class of 2014 will enroll in seven different colleges in the fall, in six different states. Together they earned

almost $1 million in merit-based scholarships.

GRADUATION The class of 2014 was the first class to hold its graduation ceremony on the CCS campus. Mike Sharrett, former pastor of Fort Worth Presbyterian Church and former CCS father, was the graduation speaker. Sharrett is the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.

THE SENIOR GALA is one of Covenant’s most dearly-held traditions. Following dinner and slideshows, each graduate receives a “Charge.” Charges note the particular talents and characteristics God has molded into the graduates’ lives, and admonishes them to honor God in specific ways as they move into the next chapter of their lives. Each charge is prayerfully written and delivered by one of the student’s teachers or coaches.

SENIOR TRIP Each year Covenant seniors spend a week in Italy, visiting many of the sites they studied as part of their classical education. They are accompanied by lecturers who are experts in the foundations of western civilization – their CCS teachers!

COVENANT WINS TAPPS 1A GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPCovenant’s Rhetoric Golf team won 1st place in the TAPPS 1A State Golf Championship April 29, 2014, at the Cottonwood Golf Course in Waco.

Junior Callen Clark placed 3rd in singles rankings. The Rhetoric Golf season begins in late February with two practices each week. On Wednesdays they practice fundamentals, and on Fridays they play a full round of golf, says Coach Jeff Tanner.

“We had six boys on the Rhetoric team this year, which was great as we saw each student improve their game each week and help us get to the State Tournament,” said Tanner. “Two players graduated in 2014, so we should have four returning students and would welcome any new 9th graders who would like to play in Spring 2015.” Tanner recommends younger students start playing during the Logic School years to familiarize themselves with the game in preparation for Rhetoric Golf.

CROW WINS STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Freshman Cameron Crow won first place in the TAPPS 1A State Tennis Championship April 24, 2014, at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

He beat Tanner Archer of Amarillo Ascension Academy in the final round 6-3, 6-2. Crow was undefeated in the four matches he played during the tournament.

Crow has been playing tennis for six years through TCU’s youth tennis program. His coaches are David Galloway, an assistant tennis professional while at TCU, and Jeff Wrage, Associate Director of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

LOGIC BOYS WIN CSAF CHAMPIONSHIP MEETRhetoric and Logic Track and Field teams finished strong at their championship meets. Logic

Boys won the 2014 CSAF Championships held at Central Junior High in Euless. This was their second consecutive CSAF Championship. Logic Girls, a young team of mostly sixth graders this year, came in fourth at the CSAF Championships after a close battle. The Logic girls were the CSAF champions the previous three years and expect a comeback in 2015.

Freshman Josiah Brown won the TAPPS 1A State 110-meter hurdles at Baylor University. In other events, Josiah placed 3rd in triple jump, Kendall Danley placed 2nd in 100-meter hurdles, Anna Hornell placed 3rd in the 800-meter run, and Georgia Love placed 2nd in the 200-meter dash. The Rhetoric Girls team placed 2nd in the TAPPS North Regional Championship, and 5th at the State meet.

CHAMPS!

THE SPRING PRODUCTION OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, JR. WAS A SMASHING SUCCESS.

A musical of this scale takes a lot of dedication and hard work and these students met the challenge. We had 50 in the cast, 11 working backstage and with the technical needs of lights and sound. There were a total of 61 students ranging in age from 3rd through 12th grades working together to put on an amazing show.

There were also multitudes of parents and faculty working behind the scenes to make it all happen. From costumes, to lights and sound, to learning lines, songs, blocking and choreography, everyone was committed to making this production one to remember. And we did it!  I believe we continued the Covenant tradition of excellence in theatre and began a new tradition of being able to present our shows on our own stage in Covenant's new building.

As we move forward into the 2014-15 school year we look forward to yet another show and continuing the theatre traditions of Covenant. Please

plan to make the spring production a family tradition to attend.  You will not be disappointed! Kate Hicks, CCS Theater Director

Fruit ofthe Spirit

AWARDS

Serving God by Serving the Community

Project Hope is just one way we teach our students to “actively serve their church and community and pursue servant-leadership in vocation, family, and community.” Covenant has been holding this community-service event for four years and it has become a highlight of the year for our school community.

Each year we work with residents of Como to identify needs and projects that best serve the residents and that are most feasible for our teams of students and volunteers to complete. We have partnered with Como community churches, BURN Ministries, ODWIN (Opening Doors for Women in Need), Meals on Wheels and neighborhood association leaders to identify the needs in the neighborhood. This year Project Hope received generous support from The Sid W. Richardson Foundation and The Miles Foundation.

Over the years we have painted murals, constructed sound booths, planted gardens, decorated offices, painted fences and much more. Tasks are divided among the grades to enable students at all skill levels to participate. Parents, grandparents, friends, teachers and students work together to glorify God through acts of service.

BUILD theCONNECTIONBuilding Campaign When the Upper School Building was dedicated in November of last year, there was $1 million left in construction costs. Since November of 2013, we have raised $768,500 leaving $231,500 needed for Upper School construction costs.

We are very grateful to the CCS faculty, families and grandparents that responded to a challenge from the Amon Carter Foundation and made this possible. In addition to CCS families, we are grateful to the Moriah Foundation, and Helen Irwin Littauer Educational Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee for their support.
