Study background – aims

This research sought to establish what teacher mentoring stakeholders might learn from successful and effective practice in other sectors – in the UK and internationally.

1. Identify effective employee mentoring and coaching practice in private and public sector organisations.

2. Identify the impact of those employee mentoring and coaching schemes identified.

3. Explore the various factors contributing to the effectiveness and success of the selected mentoring and coaching schemes.

Study background – methodologyThe research team used a case-study methodology. Potential mentoring schemes – from all accross Europe – were identified and screened by local EMCC experts. Importance of evidence base for selection.10 case studies were developed. 5 in the UK, 1-1 further case studies in U.S.; Norway; Turkey; Hungary; Romania. Case studies were based on semi-structured interviews with Mentors, Mentees and program coordinators from the same organization. Interviews were complemented with document analysis. Scientific context was explored through a literature review.

Selected findings5 areas – crucial for program success – were identified, with more than 30+ common findings under these. Examples include:

Mentor characteristics - Mentors are committed to their own learning and development.Mentee characteristics- Mentees are willing and able to seek help and share their perceived learning and development needs with their mentor.Mentoring relationship- Mentors provide mentees with appropriate degrees of challenge to enable them to develop their thinking and practice.- Mentor and mentee construct a mutual understanding of needs, aims and expectations, and a shared sensitivity to each other’s disposition. Institutional support for mentoring- Mentees are provided with development opportunities and/or information to enable them to make the most of mentoring.- Programmes are overseen by a mentoring coordinator.Structure of the program- In matching mentors and mentees, care is taken to avoid too substantial a gap in their relative seniority.
