Safety
Before You Begin...• Learn to recognize the safety symbols and the
warning symbols for hazardous materials • These include the:• 1) WHMIS symbols
(Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
2) HHPS(____________________________________)
What is WHMIS?• Provide information on the
safe use of hazardous materials in Canadian workplaces.
• It has been in effect since October 31, 1988.
Why was WHMIS created? • WHMIS was created to
help stop:-injuries,-illnesses,-deaths-medical costs, and fires
caused by hazardous materials in the workplace.
Classification• WHMIS covers six classes of controlled products,
that are lettered A through F. • Eight hazard symbols are used for these different
classes.• Some products can fall under more than one class
WHMIS labels• The purpose of labels is to:
- alert workers to the main hazards of material- provide instructions for safe handling-to direct workers to the Material Safety Data
Sheet(MSDS) for morenformation.
• The two types of WHMIS labels are:-the supplier label -the workplace label.
WHMIS Symbols: have circle with a drawing in the center
COMPRESSED GAS
FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL
OXIDIZING MATERIAL
POISONOUS AND INFECTIOUS MATERIAL CAUSING IMMEDIATE AND SERIOUS TOXIC EFFECTS
POISONOUS AND INFECTIOUS MATERIAL CAUSING OTHER TOXIC EFFECTS
BIOHAZARDOUS INFECTIONS MATERIAL
CORROZIVE MATERIAL
DANGEROUSLY REACTIVE MATERIAL
All supplier labels have a broken lined border
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
What does HHPS stand for?
• H = Hazardous• H = Household • P = Product• S = Symbols
What is the use of the HHPS?
These symbols were created to indicate exactly why and to what degree a household product (e.g. bleach) is dangerous.
Frames indicate the level of danger
Icons display the specific type of hazard
Note: WHMIS symbols have a
circle around the drawing. HHPS do
not
Flammable Hazard• The product could ignite (catch on fire) if exposed to
flames, sparks, friction, or heat.
Poison• The product is very poisonous and could have
immediate and serious effects, including death, if eaten or drunk. Smelling or tasting some products can also cause serious harm.
Explosive Hazard• The container can explode if it is heated or
punctured.
Corrosive Hazard• The product will corrode clothing, skin, or other
materials and will burn eyes on contact.
Laboratory Safety Rules
NO HORSEPLAY IN THE LAB:
PLAYING AROUND IN THE LAB WILL RESULT
IN BEING BANNED FROM LAB ACTIVITIES.
What to wear
• Closed toe shoes.• Pants (no shorts)• Eye protection,
gloves, and apron where indicated.
• Long hair tied back.
Fire Blanket: Use to extinguish small starting
fires.
Fire extinguisher: Can be useful on a person but this
should be avoided as it can cause frostbite and
suffocate.
Eyewash station: Used
to flush eyes if chemical/toxin is splashed into
them.
Broken Glass Bin: Sweep up broken glass (never pick it up with hands) and put it in
broken glass bin, not the regular garbage!

What is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
How do you smell a substance properly? What is George Bush doing
wrong here?
Suppose someone splashed hydrochloric acid in an eye. What
should the first aid procedure include?
