Information Technology is changing our way of working.

The main purpose of a Substation Automa-tion System is to supervise, controi andprotect the transmission and distribution ofelectric power, i.e. to ensure the reliable flowof power. Traditionally this has been doGewith separate relays, instalied in severalcubicles per bar. However, modern demands) for reduced costs, better utilisation and moreefficient power network management call forsolutions to satisfy a variety of requirements.Today's world of Information Technology

) (IT), informationfsuper-highways andcomputers is rapidly improving the range ofsolutions available. IT is playing anincreasingly important role in the area ofSubstation Controi.

Just as a Local Area Network is thebackbone in a PYRAMID@ Substation Auto-mation system, so too is knowledge thebackbone of the REC 561 controi terminal.Years of experience in the supply ofprotection and controi terminals in Sub-station Automation applications have helpedstructure a versatile basis for handling diffe-rent requirements. The result: the REC 561.

) The flexible REC 561 terminal is

suitable for various configurations stretchingfrom cost-efficient solutions with a highdegree of dependence, to optimised high-

) availability configurations. REC 561 controiterminals include features which providesolutions for cost-effective configurations to

meet the demand for uninterrupted power

flow.Reliable and cost-efficient power network management.

In cost-optimised solutions, oneREC 561 handles the supervision andcontroi of three high-voltage bars, with aseparate synchro-check of each bar.

high-voltage protections. The terminal isalso provided with command output boardswith double-pole outputs and supervisionfunctions to ensure a high degree of security

against unwanted operations.

High-voltage apparatus contralThe apparatus controi function performsoren and close commands for high-voltageapparatus and indicates status. This facilityhandles commands coming from differentoperator locations such as a station MMI,controlcentre or local panel.

The REC 561 controI terminal is used at baylevel in a Substation ControI System tocontroI and supervise circuit breakers, disconnectors and earthing switches, in anykind of switchgear/busbar arrangement.

Standardised pre-tested functions suchas high-voltage apparatus controI, inter-

locking, synchro-check and automaticreclosing are examples of useful functions ina bay, which can be implemented in thesame hardware or controI terminal whileretaining high availability in the completesystem. Binary and analog process signals areconnected directly to REC 561, which fulftlsthe same EMC standards as applicable for

arrangements connectedto REC 561.

Configurable logicA large number of configuration logiccircuits such as OR gates, AND gates andtimers are built into the REC 561 terminaland are thus available to the user.

Interlockinglnterlocking means inhibiting the operationof high-voltage apparatuses in a switchgear,so as to prevent damage to the switchgearand personal injury to operators.

The interlocking function consists ofsoftware modules locatedin each controiterminal. For station-wide interlocking, communication between modules in diffe-rent bays is performed via the communi-cation bus or hard-wired via the binary

inputs/outputs.

Pole discordance protection

This function applies to circuit breakers withindividual operation gears per pole. Adiscordance caused by one pole failing toclose or open can be tolerated only for alimited duration, for instance at single-phase

reclosing.

Page 5: Substation Controi with customer value - ABB Group · Substation Controi ... synchro-check and automatic reclosing are examples of useful functions in ... operating independently

Loss of power system voltage

This function will provide a delayed three-phase trip in case ofloss-of-power systemvoltage in all three phases.

It can be used as a preparatory step forpower system restoration.

Disturbance recorder

A high-performance disturbance recordercan be included. The disturbance recordercan memorise up to 10 analogue and 48binary signals and the minimum recordingtime is 10 seconds. Pre-fault and post-faulttimes can be set.

Additional input/output facilities

The basic version ofREC 561 includes in-put/output (I/O) boards comprising twentybinary inputs and seventeen output felarcontacts. Up to eleven additional I/O boards, each of them comprising sixteen binaryinputs ortwelvecommand outputs, or mixedboards with eightinputs and twelve outputs,or six analogue input channels for mA signals, are available as options.

Available functions.

Time-tagged events

All events are time-tagged at source, so theREC 561 terminal provides considerableaccuracy with a resolution of 1 ms withminute pulse for synchronisation.

Remote serial communication

Two serial communication ports areavailable within the REC 561. This enablesthe controi terminal to be integrated intothe Substation Monitoring and/or the Sub-station Controi System at the same time.

Pulse counters for metering

This function counts energy pulses for kWhand kvarh from external energy meters.

Presentation of phase values

Provides information on the actual primaryand secondary phases of the voltages andcurrents as they enter the terminal.

Synchronism and energising check

This function provides an enable signal atset voltage, phase and frequency conditionsacross the breaker that should be closed.

Fuse failure supervision

Together with the energising check functionthere is a fuse failure detection facility toblock uncontrolled energising in the event ofa blown vr secondary fuse or tripped fuse

switch.

Single and/or three-phase auto-reclosing

The reclosing function can be selected toperform singie-phase and! or three-phasereclosing from eight singie-shot to multi-shot reclosing programs.

Breaker-failure protection

The measurement is based on adaptive sig-nal detection in order to achieve a highdegree of security and sensitivity, togetherwith a short resetting time.

The use of this common platform! includingall documentation, makes it extreihely easyto integrate new products from th~ samerange inta the system. '

A new product will be familiar fromthe beginning as regards programming, engineering, documentation and $e man-machine interface (MMI). This implieseasier training for a whole range of pro-tection and controi terminals.

Using this common platfor~ alsogives a minimum cost for stock andmaintenance, since the same hardware isused in different tyres of protection andcontroi terminals.

The platform is multiprocessor-based, hich

gives high redundancy and high securiIThe multiprocessor scheme also

ensur~ internal independence of the di e-rent f4nctions., essential for defined triptimes irrespective of the number of opti nsadded to the processor.

Behind the front there is an interconne~tion board to which circuit bo eplugged from the rear.

There are modules with input tformers, ND conversion, modules forprocessing, power supply and binary inp tand output signals. All binary inputs anrelay outputs are configurable for differe tfunctions.

Electrical connections are made bscrew terminals at the rear. The controI t r-minal can be mounted in a 19" rack, or tcan be flush or semi-flush mounted in a a-nel by using different mounting accessor es.

The relays in the 500 Series can bequipped with two communication portoperating independently of each other, p r-mitting simultaneous communication w thtwo different masters. This gives the use thepossibility of having both a monitoring da controI system in the same station.

).

The 500 Series uses thesame hardware andsoftware platform forprotection and controiapplications. This resultsin a user-friendly productwhich is programmablethrough the built-in MM!.the PC connection at thefront. the Station Moni-toring System or Sub-station Controi System. With the compact. safeand user-friendly 500Series it is possible toconfigure your own intelli-gent terminal to provide

optimum performance. This can reduce both in-

stallation and maintenancecosts and also enablemore efficient power sys-tem management reducingoperational anddisturbance costs andallowing better utilisationof the high-voltage

equipment.

Each protection and controi terminal is always equippedwith a built-in local MMI, but a PC can also be connectedto the front as a complement, for maintenance and fast

commissioning.

The intelligent path to reliablecommunication

The 500 Series is a part of the PYRAMID@concept for Substation Automation and thePanorama concept for Power Network Ma-nagement: the intelligent terminal in the in-telligent substation for the intelligent powernetwork, from generation to consumption.

In the intelligent substation, thecommunication philosophy is of the utmostimportance in order to provide the right in-formation to the right person at the righttime, and in a reliable war. For this reason, the numerical protection and controIterminals in the 500 Series can be equippedwith two remote communication portsoperating independently of each other, per-mitting simultaneous communication withthe Substation ControI and Substation

Monitoring System.Communication gives possibilities of intelligent sharing ofinformation.

REC 561 has excellent

application flexibilitythrough its wide range ofavailable options and con-figuration combinations. The user can definenecessary connectionsbetween different functionsaccording to the systemneeds. Functional inputsand outputs as weil as ter-minal binary outputs, cansimply be configured bymeans of a frontconnected PC.A number of free logical

elements (AND, OR,Timers) enables con-figuration of differentrequirements for customer

engineering.
