ACADEMICSTUDYING ON YOUR OWN

Now that you’ve been accepted as a student, you may be both excited and anxious with the idea of being a student. After all, you’re on the path to achieving your dream of holding a scroll in your hands.

However, like many others, you may also be somewhat anxious about life as a student. Can I do this? How will I manage? Will it be easy or difficult? Can I make the time? These may be some of the questions you will ask. Don’t worry.

OUM understands that as adult learners you will have all these challenges and more. Our learning materials are designed with these considerations. We have also created a variety of media to suit your needs. Most courses come with a module. For some of your courses, you will get a study guide and text book. In addition, OUM has provided a range of other learning materials that you can view, listen to or work with. Make sure you know what’s available and try to benefit from most, if not all, the learning materials.

As a student you will need to:

Invest in an ICT device for your studies Subscribe to Internet services Create a study space in your home for individual study Gain support and understanding from your spouse and children Discuss with family members on your need for study time Set aside 8-10 hours every week for every course you take Read your modules before every tutorial Participate actively during tutorials, online and offline Log in to myVLE regularly, at least once every two days Identify the learning materials that are available for your course Form study groups if you prefer to study in groups Eat nutritious food and rest well Focus, persevere and maintain your study schedule Remember your dream of holding a scroll in your hands by the year _____ (fill in)
