Applying to Study Abroad at UAL Step 1: choose your course Use the programme pages to decide which options you wish to study and what courses and Colleges you are interested in. You can apply to study at Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Step 2: check our term dates, deadlines and fees Integrated and Semester Programme students may apply to study during Autumn, Spring or the full academic year. Summer Study Abroad students may apply to join courses available to Study Abroad students during the summer holiday. Check our term dates to help you decide when you would like to study and the tuition fees for each session. Once you have decided this check what deadline you need to meet when submitting your application.

Autumn Application Deadline: 31 May (unless otherwise specified)

Full Year Application Deadline: 31 May (unless otherwise specified)

Spring Application Deadline: 31 October (unless otherwise specified)

Summer Study Abroad Application Deadline: Rolling applications subject to availability

Step 3: determine eligibility You must be at least 18 years or older to enrol as a Study Abroad student at UAL.

Study Abroad applicants have normally completed at least one year of undergraduate study at an overseas higher education institution.

Students’ grade point average should be 3.0 or above (or equivalent).

Students from institutions teaching in languages other than English must provide evidence of language proficiency to an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, with some courses requiring 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5. See course pages for specific English requirements.

It is also recommended that you ensure that your home institution will recognise your studies in London and the grades gained. Approval from your home institution may be a requirement of your visa. Please contact us if your advisors need a copy of the Course Handbook, which comprehensively describes the academic content and structure of each course.

When you apply to an Integrated programme, our Course Directors will advise on whether you are most suited to join Year 1 or Year 2 of the course you have chosen, on the basis of your previous experience in the specialist subject area. Study Abroad students are not invited to join Year 3 - much of this final year is taken up with personal projects and research.

Step 4: complete the Study Abroad application form Use the “Study Abroad Course and Application Search” tool to look for the programme you would like to apply for and start an application form. A step by step guide is available in Appendix B of this document.

Step 5: provide supporting documentation When submitting an application you will be asked to provide the following documents:

• Personal statement: this is where you explain why you have chosen to study at University of the Arts London, what you would like to achieve in your work and personally during your time in London as well as describe your longer term goals. Your personal statement should be between 300 – 500 words.

• Letter of recommendation: this should be a letter of support of your Study Abroad programme from an academic within your current department. This should be on official headed paper and signed by the person providing the reference.

• Academic Transcript: please have your most recent official transcript ready for upload. PDF or JPEG files preferred.

• Portfolio: most of our courses will require a portfolio, either in the form of images or videos or written work, depending on the subject area. If the programme for which you are applying requires a portfolio then you will receive an email instructing you how to submit your portfolio through the application portal. What types of files can I upload to my portfolio?

For applicants who are requested to provide a portfolio, the only files that can be uploaded as part of the portfolio are:

• Images: bmp, gif, jpg, jpeg, png • Audio: mp3, mp4, ogg, wav, wma

• Video: avi, mp4, mpg, mpeg, mkv, mov, wmv

Please note that it will not be possible to upload pdf documents to your portfolio.

What is the maximum file limit?

File resolutions should be no more than 4000 pixels in either height or width.

Files uploaded should not exceed the 512 MB file size limit.

Please see some guidance on what should be included in your portfolio below: - Art, Design, Fashion courses: please submit a portfolio of 20-25 images.

The work you include should show breadth, and demonstrate your creative thinking, and personal research, progressing through stages to a finished piece.

o Additional information for Fashion at CSM applicants: you should demonstrate your fashion research and creative process skills; sketchbook imagery which shows the origin of ideas displayed in your portfolio; and the progression through design stages to a finished piece.

- Acting & Directing courses: please submit a video of a recent performance in which you have taken a significant role.

- Sound Arts: please submit an audio file of your original sound work.

- Film and Television: please submit a showreel of extracts of your film projects, along with a short written film analysis.

- All other courses (such as Media Studies, Journalism, Publishing, PR etc): three pieces of written work appropriate to the specialist area.

Step 6: accepting your offer Once your application has been approved, you will receive an email to confirm you have an offer and you will be asked to login to the portal to accept or decline the offer. See sample emails on Appendix C of the guidance.

Students paying tuition fees directly to UAL: You will be required to pay a £500 deposit to secure your place within 2 weeks from receiving your offer letter. If you are unsure whether or not you are required to make a deposit payment to secure your place, please contact [email protected].

Step 7: before you leave

If you wish to stay in university accommodation please apply as early as you can. Instructions on who to apply will be sent to you once you have an offer. You can also contact the University's Accommodation Services on +44 20 7514 6240 or email them at [email protected]. Please inform Accommodation Services that you are a Study Abroad student.

You will also receive information about our Welcome Programme approximately 4 weeks before the start of your course.

Depending on your nationality you may need to apply for a Student Visitors Visa or a General Student Visa. Check our guidance on entry clearance page for up to date information.

You should also take out appropriate health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Students paying tuition fees directly to UAL: You must ensure that you have paid your full course fees six weeks prior to arriving in the UK. Full payment instructions will be listed in your offer letter.

Step 8: Your study timetable You will receive your study timetable only once you have completed the enrolment process. You will not receive detailed course information, or be expected to choose classes (except on the Semester programmes), before you arrive in London. Information about accessing your timetable and course list will be provided during your induction week. It is up to you to ensure you have written approval of the programme from your faculty, and that you fulfil their requirements for assessment, attend classes and keep a record of all your study hours and projects.

Appendix A: Study Abroad Course and Application Search Guidance Use this tool to search for the Study Abroad course you are interested in and apply.

Search by course name keyword You have the option to use a keyword (for example “virtual reality”) in the “Course Name” box to search for all the courses offered in the area you are interested in.

Appendix B: Study Abroad Application Form Guidance Login

1. Once you have chosen a Study Abroad programme from the “Study Abroad Course and Application Search” tool, you will see the screen below.

If you have applied to UAL previously you may already have a username (email address) and password. If you do, you can enter your login information below and login:

2. Please complete all of the mandatory fields of the Personal Details section. Your email address will be linked to your username.

3. Click Proceed to continue to the next page.

If you get the following error message “username already in use”, you already have a login with UAL. Please go back to the main page and login with your credentials. If you have forgotten your password you will be able to reset it.

Checklist Once you have completed your personal details, a new application will be created under your username. The first screen will show you the checklist of what’s to follow. Make sure you check that you are submitting an application for the correct programme and start date. This will show at the top of the screen.

Agents/Study Abroad Providers Some students may have an overseas representative.

4. If you are applying through an agent or a Study Abroad provider, you can select them on the Agent screen. If you do not have an overseas representative, please leave the field blank and continue to the next screen.

Second Choice Programme

5. In this section you must indicate an alternative course that you would like to be considered for if we cannot place you onto your first choice programme.

6. On this page you can also select one of our Optional Modules. Read more about Optional Modules programme structure, dates, fees.

Qualification In this section of the application, you are asked if you are currently studying at an overseas institution and what is your highest qualification.

7. If you are currently enrolled at an overseas institutions, select “Yes” form the drop-down menu “Are you currently studying?”

8. Indicate the information requested about where you are currently studying, subject area and expected completion date.

9. If you have any previous qualification, such as a Bachelor’s degree, please provide this information under the “Highest Qualification” section

10. If you have completed a previous degree, you can also upload your certificate and transcript in the “Documents” section. These are not mandatory. You will be asked to upload your most recent transcript in the “Supporting Information” section.

11. Some students will need to demonstrate they meet the English language requirement set by the course or by UKVI to obtain the appropriate visa for the course. Eligibility requirements can be found on our Apply page.

12. In this section you can indicate any English language qualification you hold and your results. You do not need to provide your certificate at the time of application. You must meet the requirement at the time of enrolment unless it is required earlier by your visa.

Supporting Information Courses that require written work In this section you will be asked to upload your most recent transcript and your written work submission.

Courses that require a visual portfolio In this section you will be asked to upload your most recent transcript. You will be sent a link to PebblePad after you submit your application. You will be able to upload your visual portfolio on PebblePad. Watch UAL’s portfolio guidance video.

Personal Statement In this section you are asked to provide a personal statement explaining the reasons why you want to Study Abroad at UAL. The personal statement should be between 300-500 words. Further guidance can be found on our Apply page.

Passport In this section you are asked if you need a visa to study in the UK. Students should select “Yes” and provide your passport information. Most students will require a visa to study with us. Check visa and immigration guidance on our website.

Academic Reference In this section you have the opportunity to either:

a. Upload a reference letter that you already have.

b. Provide the contact details of a person who can provide a reference letter for

you. If you are selecting this option, make sure that the person you add is aware they will be providing a reference for you. They will receive an email to the address provided.

Funding In this section you should indicate if you are responsible to pay the tuition fees directly or if your home institution or provider will be covering the tuition fees for your programme.

Appendix C: Confirmation emails Below are some of the emails you will receive once you start your application for a Study Abroad programme at UAL.

Account creation email Once you create an application, you will receive the following confirmation email. If you are unable to complete your application all at once, you can finish it at a later date following the link provided.

Application confirmation email Once you have submitted an application, you will receive a confirmation email with all the course details and other useful information.

Login email This email confirms your student ID number. You will need this number to login to the portal and various other areas while you commence your studies.
