Lessons from the Ladder

FAST FACTSAlex Montefalco

GRAD DATE: 2008 MAJOR: Global Studies and English CURRENTLY: Executive Recruitment at LVMH

Did you study abroad during your time at Purdue? If so, please briefly describe your experience.

Yes, I studied abroad during my sophomore year. I chose a program in Brussels, Belgium. I was eager to experience a non-traditional study abroad location and as the de facto capital of the EU, Brussels was very appealing.

As an employer, how do you feel study abroad experience benefits students in regards to landing a job?

I would say that having a global perspective is extremely important. Taking the time to study abroad shows an employer that you are eager to experience other cultures and are open to different perspectives. I personally think that it also shows that you’re courageous! It takes a lot of confidence to leave behind the comforts of home and University to venture into a new country where you don’t initially have the same networks.

What specific skills and/or attributes are companies looking for in candidates who have international or study abroad experience?

I would say that in today’s working environments, companies truly value adaptability. During study abroad, there are a lot of unknowns. You have to really be agile, which is a valuable experience.

If you’re interning abroad, I think this is very interesting, as you’re not only living within a new environment, but you’re also working within one. This adds a whole new dimension to your experience. If you have the opportunity to intern abroad, I would recommend pursuing it.

What advice would you give to current students, especially those looking to study/intern abroad?

I would say be open-minded. Do not enter study abroad with preconceived expectations. Go into this new and exciting chapter and just experience it. By this, I mean, truly immerse yourself in the culture.

My second piece of advice is travel. Study abroad is a rare opportunity and I am so happy that I traveled on weekends to surrounding countries. There is so much to learn and absorb.

Written by Chelsea Springs - CCO Office Have you thought about studying abroad, but been discouraged by the cost, the added diffi-culty of maneuvering your schedule, or the sheer intimidating thought of stepping so drastically far out of your comfort zone? If you can answer yes to this question, then you’re not alone—we hear it all the time. The truth is that studying abroad is much more attainable than you probably think, and 100% worth it in the long run.

Here are three reasons why studying abroad is worth giving serious thought:

1) It’s a Small WorldWe’ve become a global economy; now more than ever, companies are doing business overseas and expecting new employees to step into that environment seamlessly. One of the crucial skill sets necessary to be able to do this well is to have the ability to work with diverse groups of people. It’s all about keeping your mind open to all of the different cultural norms and expectations you can experience in other countries.

2) “I’m a Self-Starter”Taking the plunge and deciding to study abroad isn’t easy. That is why actually going through with the decision says something about the people who do. The fact that you’re determined enough

to wade through the obstacles that living abroad entails shows that you’re driven. You’re curious and eager to learn. You’re willing to put hard work into something in order to find a reward at the end of the line. These are all characteristics that employers frequently tell candidates that they’re looking for.

3) Grow Like You’ve Never Grown BeforeIt may sound cliché to say that studying abroad will help you find yourself, but that’s because it’s true. Living so drastically far out of your comfort zone is one of the best ways to get to know your-self through learning what your limits are, or how you perform in high-pressure situations that go beyond the classroom setting; it helps you discov-er what kind of subjects fascinate you that you’ve never been exposed to before (or fascinate you even more after understanding them from a new standpoint). You can more clearly see what global opportunities are open to you for the future, and how you see the world from a functional perspec-tive. Discovering these things help you figure out what you want—out of both a future career and life in general.

Need help deciding on whether study abroad or other opportunities for gaining experience are right for you? Have you studied abroad and want to know how market your experience? Stop by the CCO for a drop-in Monday through Friday 10am-4pm to meet with a CCO staff member.

My Internship Abroad ExperienceBy Neysa Herrera Cuello

“Leaving my country, my family and friends, and living in a very different town from my natal Cartagena has been the scariest but most amazing experience of my life.”

The idea of moving to another country with a different language, style of life and a whole different social system, creates a great deal of anxiety. The labor world will always be unknown and a big source of fear for senior students expected to be in the labor market soon, even more if your first contact with that world will be in a country with a different culture, norms and values in the work place. As a twenty year old senior from Cartagena, Colombia, who had never traveled out of the country without her parents before, my biggest fear was not being able to adapt to life in the United States I would spend several months in a location thousands of miles away from my comfort zone with friends, family and the life I am used to. It was a rare combination of fear and excitement.

It has been three months now since I started my internship in the Liberal Arts Career Development office at Purdue University and I have learned a lot more about myself in this three months than I did during the five years at my home university. Facing the unique and real challenge that this experience represents has helped me grow. Every day at my internship is a test; the fact that I have been able to go through the obstacles and learn from the mistakes I have made has contributed to making me a mature person with increased confidence in myself. I am now more capable to lead in a global environment respecting and valuing other cultures in order to learn from them.

The cultural immersion that this internship has provided me gives me a strong understanding of business practices and the ability to learn more about what it takes to be successful working abroad, as well as the opportunity to network with professionals in another part of the world.

This experience has brought several benefits to my life. Not only have I gained professional skills in an international context, but I have developed language skills related to business communication in the best environment possible – a place where I am forced to speak the English language in real situations.

Interning abroad has provided me with personal life enrichment and fulfillment that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I feel

confident to sell myself in front of employers as the one asset that they are looking for, and I am not afraid to prove it. I believe that tomorrow’s companies need employers with the capacity to understand global environments, and this type of experiences give you that value in your resume. My internship in the LACD office has been a continuous learning experience and a training for life. It has been a journey where I have met very capable and skilled people who I have learned a lot from. Also, I have gained good friends. You don’t get all these experiences at once by staying put in your comfort zone. My one tip is to take the chance, go out and explore the world by yourself!
