City Journallooking for personal data, traffic flowstudying the relationships between space and personFind space that people especially interact.redefining rest place in a city

Wednesday, March 7,

Trains come back and forth in the city. Traffic jam is every road during rush hour. From the time sun arises, we run our everyday life by starting moving. From Starbucks to office, from house to school, we are constantly moving according to our schedule. The moving pattern in daily life can be very habitual. Using this characteristic, the pattern we move, we can learn a lot about a persons simply base on locations.

Time plays a key element. If the time setting is changed, then we all have to live according to it. In an urban scale, this project provides an indicator for improving the city when considering pedestrian flow. This project finds out those spot where people interact.

Aldo Rossi – The Architecture of the City: 'Collective Memory'‘…the city itself is the collective memory of the people; and as memory is always attached to material facts and places, the city is a “locus” of collective memory. This relationship between the locus and its inhabitants thus becomes the dominant image, both of architecture and landscape; and as in turn the material facts are assimilated into memory, so do new facts take shape in the city

Virtual space

Motivation

“Certain places or cities seem to be devoid of any form of collective memory while others portray a pristine image of the past and seem to be stuck at a different point in time altogether. Some places, like gardens for example, may be designed such that one is forced to recall certain memories by the strategic placement of a statue or a fountain – a ‘staging of ruin and fragment’. Gardens also have the ability to ‘carve out in the contemporary urban theatre, a hollow where all epochs of the city are virtually and simultaneously present, because no single one imposes itself in its built opacity.’”

https://vimeo.com/24718161Cooper Smith, a interaction designer, worked with a 1000 runs taken from the Nike+ data store and produced a series of amazing graphics focusing on New York. What he is working with is really the GPS tracks and the contained time and location data. He has been using the Google Refine for data cleaning and processing for the visualisations. The data nicely draws out the geography of New York, especially Manhattan and shows a runners map of NY of sort. It is an individuals map with a collective presentation of spatial activity. Different patterns are showing as Smith is experimenting with different visualisation and processing parameters. Image taken from cargoCollective / Smith explains the distance

In Transit ,uses the GPS data trails drawn by cabs as a starting point for looking at the city, and trying to find and make social sense of patterns that emerge visually from the data.

Jeremy Wood is an artist and mapmaker whose work is an expression of the poetry and politics of space. For over a decade he has been exploring GPS satellite technology as a tool for digital mark making on water, over land, and in the air. Step1 Applying technology as a media in art field is not a news. A couple years ago, people already start to use satellite to create route tracking as pen to draw. The most fascinating parts is to explore three dimension space in two dimension. Using this method as a way to record movement journal. we will learn more on personal information.

Method

Find out those spot where people interact. Overlapping different persons data to see their interaction spot.

Interaction definition will be: If the person believe to have a social connect to another, then it connects.

Hypothetically, I am expecting to see people more interactive in comfort zone. Park, restaurant might be easier for people to relaxed and have interaction.
