BIRD forges ahead in its mission to support American and Israeli companies in hi-tech and life sciencesand remains committed to maintaining focused involvement in these areas. In 2003, we continuedour activities in promoting industry progress in new and emerging technological areas, as well as insupporting innovative efforts in more established areas.

Today, with emerging signs of recovery in several global high technology sectors, BIRD is ready torespond by offering its services to Israeli and US companies. We are attuned to the cautious optimismin the industry among those who witnessed the last “bursting of the bubble”.

Israel’s excellent science, cutting edge technologies and ambitious entrepreneurs have generated greatinterest in global markets. This is particularly the case in high potential technological areas such ascommunications, the Internet, security, corporate software systems, stem cells, and cardiovascularapplications. However, many Israeli start-ups do not have the know-how, maturity and drive to leveragetheir technological advantage and make the transition to becoming established, global companies.BIRD offers its services to those companies which are willing to try and are able to collaborate with alarger US partner.

BIRD’s approach is to use its experience and longstanding relations in the US hi-tech and life sciencesarenas to foster relationships for Israeli companies that will improve their positioning, increase theirvalue and create longer lasting opportunities.

At BIRD, we focus our attention on market sectors with high commercial potential and a significantnumber of innovative Israeli technology companies. This combination increases the chance of matchingany one of those companies with an American market leader.

We are currently planning to concentrate our efforts on the following areas:Homeland security, Nanotechnology, Communications (connecting everything), Medical devices,Enterprise software (the ultimate data base, the best customer service and the virtual company),Devices for the home, Stem cells and regeneration of defective organs, Personalized medicine,Semiconductors (capital equipment and microelectronics), Software security, and others.

Looking forward to a peaceful and prosperous year.

Dov Hershberg,

Executive Director

BIRD’s annual income is comprised of interest on the Endowment Fund and repayments from companies which have

participated in successful projects. This annual income is at a level that makes BIRD self sufficient and permits it to meet

all its financial obligations, including payments to approved projects, on time.

Since its inception, BIRD has received interest of approximately $174 million on the Endowment Fund and repayments

of approximately $74 million from successful projects. Over this period, grant payments to companies have reached

approximately $214 million.
