Getting Started
TAFEWA - An Adult LearningEnvironment
Your College ID Card
TAFEWA is a vocationally oriented adultlearning environment. It prepares students foremployment in their career of choice.TAFEWA must of necessity provide a matureage learning environment to responsiblyprepare students for the workforce. At thesame time, students range in age from midteens to retirees and so for some students theTAFEWA experience provides a transition froma school environment to an adultemployment-focussed environment. TheCollege therefore expects students to conductthemselves in the manner appropriate to theworkplace environment and with respect forthe rights of others to enjoy and benefit fromthe experience of learning at TAFE.
Computing Servicesavailable to Students
Lecturers and faculty administration staff helpstudents with their enrolments. Once youhave paid your fees to the cashier, you shouldthen ask the learning resource centre/library
library staff to issue you with a College IDcard. They will ask to see your enrolment
forms. Your photograph will be taken.
IMPORTANT: If you don't have a College IDcard you should request one from learningresource centre/library staff as soon aspossible. With your ID card you can borrowlibrary books and activate your account forphotocopying. It is also handy for those timeswhen you are asked to provide your studentnumber or when you are seeking a studentdiscount or concession.
The Information Services (IS) Departmentprovides all services related to computers,networking and the internet. Our goal is toprovide the best possible access tocomputers, learning material and the internetfor students and staff.
When you begin as a student here at theSouth West Regional College, you will beprovided the following:

This on-line service aims to assist students inwriting resumes and application letters,
interview techniques, selection criteria forgovernment jobs, job search procedures andinformation on apprenticeships andtraineeships. A service that helps you plan yourcareer path, and to build employability and jobseeking skills.
Vocational Interest Questionnaires (VIQ) areoffered throughout the year and are available toall students in assisting them to cope with theever-changing needs of the labour market.
Career computers are available at all campusesto navigate the world of work online. You canaccess specific career and employmentwebsites and job seeking self-help resourcesfrom these computers.

These are all accessible from College StudentPCs and through the College website atwww.swrc.wa.edu.au. Simply go to andchoose the Student Login.
In addition, if you have Internet access athome, access to College resources and
services is available. Ask your lecturer forfurther details.

You may bring your work and files from home(within the guidelines of the Student NetworkUser Agreement) and access to USB ports forthe use of USB memory keys is provided. It ishighly recommended to purchase a USBmemory key for the transfer of data, as floppydisks are no longer deemed reliable and will beeventually phased out.
There are also a few guidelines which governyour usage of College computers and theCollege network, which are covered in theStudent Network User Agreement. Thisagreement is attached at the end of thisbooklet for your reference. Please readthrough it so that you understand theconditions of use of the College network.
Students studying at Bunbury Campus maytake advantage of a 155 seat canteen formeals and snacks. The canteen is open duringteaching weeks between 7.45am and 7.45pmweekdays. A comprehensive range of mealsand snacks is available and customers can pre-order their meals. The cafeteria has tables in-side and outside. A range of snacks and drinksis also available from vending machines.There is an ATM (Automatic Teller Machine)located in the canteen.

The Bunbury Technical Bookshop sells newtextbooks, learning material and a wide rangeof stationery items. We also offer a PrintcellService which includes photocopying,scanning, binding and laminating.

The College Community Child Care Centre iscommitted to providing each child with an

College Community Child Care is a long-daycentre available for 0 to 6 year old children.The Centre is open Monday to Friday betweenthe hours of 7.30am to 5.30pm and isoperational 50 weeks of the year with 2 weeksclosure over Christmas.

Accommodation
Need a Place to Stay?If you need accommodation then PatersonHouse could be the place for you. PatersonHouse is a student residential facility (provided
by the College) offering accommodation withan independent life-style for a maximum of 40students. Within easy walking distance of theBunbury Campus, Paterson House comprises10 units, each of which has four singlebedrooms, a common kitchen area, and acommon bathroom and toilet area. Competency Based Training
Most of the Colleges training programs arecompetency based. This just means thetraining is focused on helping you to developand demonstrate the competencies requiredby industry for satisfactory performance in theworkplace.
Assessment can be done using differentmethods, e.g. oral tests, written assignments,projects, case studies, simulated exercises,practical tests or demonstrations.
Your lecturer will advise you of thecompetencies to be demonstrated and howthey will be assessed. Your lecturer willprovide you with a schedule of delivery andassessment.
Class Attendance
The College aim is to prepare you for theworkplace. Accordingly if you cannot attend
classes, we expect you to notify your lecturer.This is not only considered good manners, butalso promotes good relations and protectsyour interests. The telephone numbers of theFaculties as well as the regional campuses areprovided on page 2 of this publication tofacilitate this.

Attendance is recorded in every class. If youare aged under 18 years and you are absentfrom a scheduled class your parent/guardianwill be notified within 3 working days of theabsence.
Non-attendance by a minor
Completing Assessments onTime
For each unit of competency that you enrol inyou will receive an Assessment Plan that
shows you the assessments you will need tocomplete, along with their due dates.Completion of assessment work on timeprovides evidence of the ability to work withintime constraints. The College has a policy thatif you fail to meet the due date for anassessment task and then also fail to completethe work within an agreed extension period,you will be deemed not competent on thebasis of timeliness. For more details, ask for acopy of either the policy or leaflet onCompleting Assessments on Time from your
lecturer.
What if I need academicsupport?
Educational support in literacy, language andnumeracy is available to students.

What if I withdraw?
Should you decide that you no longer want tocontinue with some or all of your qualificationyou will need to complete an EnrolmentVariation form. If you withdraw within 4 weeksof the start of your qualification, you will beentitled to a refund. Refunds are made by(EFT) Electronic Funds Transfer. Please referto the information sheet Important Conditionsof Enrolment for refund conditions.
Please note that if you do not advise us by
completing this form, you will be resulted withunsuccessful administrative results and willstill liable for any enrolments fees owing.All Enrolment Variation applications areassessed for refund eligibility and any refunddue will be processed according to the currentDepartment of Training and EmploymentFees and Charges Policy Guidelines.

Please note that if you are a student in receiptof Centrelink payments and cease studying it isyour responsibility to notify Centrelink.Centrelink carries out regular attendancechecks with the South West Regional Collegeand non-attendance or cessation of study couldhave implications for your Centrelink payments.

Failure to pay fees may result in: Refusal to admission to classes Results and awards being withheld Refusal to re-enrol until debt is paid in full Action being taken by the College to recover

.Enrolment fees apply to most qualifications inaccordance with the Department of Educationand Trainings Fees & Charges Policy.
Please note it is your legal responsibility to paythese fees. You have 3 payment options:

Interpretation of Academic
Results
CO - Competent - This means you haveachieved competence against all the requiredcompetency standards.
CP - Competent, Provisional on completion ofapprenticeship arrangements
E - Exemption - means you have alreadybeen assessed competent in this unit in aprevious qualification.
H - Hold - means you have not yet achievedcompetence against at least one of therequired competency standards but yourlecturer expects you to achieve competencewithin the enrolment period. This is an interimgrade and the lecturer will advise you on whatis required to achieve competence and thelength of the Hold redemption period.
R - Re-enrol - means you have not achievedcompetence or have not redeemed a Holdwithin the given redemption period. You will
need to re-enrol in the unit of competency andbe re-assessed to achieve competence.
Enquiries regarding your results should bedirected to your lecturer or faculty area.Requests for a Statement of Academic Recordshould be made during office hours to theAssessment Officer on an application form thatis available from Administration staff or bytelephoning 9780 7111.

Workplace Assessments
Recognition of Prior Learning
Workplace assessments are for people inemployment who want to gain formalcredentials for the skills they use in theworkplace. You will need to provide yourlecturer with evidence that you have theseskills and may be asked to demonstrate themin the workplace. (Normal service fees apply).

The College recognises qualifications ortraining outcomes from other registeredtraining organisations, schools, universitiesand professional organisations. If you havecompleted units of competency throughanother training provider you may be eligiblefor credit transfer or an exemption. You will
need to discuss this with your lecturer.

Exemptions and Transfers ofCredit
Recognition of Prior Learning (or RPL) is anassessment process aimed at confirming andrecognising the competencies a candidate hasobtained outside of a formal education andtraining environment. These competenciesmight have been gained through informal ornon-formal training, or they may have beengained through life or work experience.
RPL assessment enables individuals to foregotraining and move directly to having theircompetencies assessed, thus avoiding the
need for unnecessary training that brings withit additional costs, including time and effort.
Although it is not necessarily a quick or simpleprocess, RPL aims to provide candidates whodo not require formal learning with a flexibleand faster way to have their skills andknowledge assessed against competenciesstipulated in Training Packages andvocationally accredited courses. Mature age jobseekers or existing workers with

Important Information for Students
Most qualifications have entry requirements orpre-requisites the TAFEWA Handbookoutlines these, or you may wish to discussthese issues with ICAS or a lecturer.
If you require treatment, ask any member ofstaff to contact a first aid trained staff member.Do not enter the first aid room without telling astaff member.Access to Student Records
All students are able to access their recordsat any time during normal office hours. Youwill be required to positively identify yourselfwith your student ID card before anyinformation is released.
You will need to sign a written agreement ifyou wish another person to have access toyour records. If you have any enquiriesregarding access to your records, see thestaff at the front counter of your campus.
Disciplinary Procedures
All students are required to comply with theStudent Code of Conduct. Basically, the codedemands that students display appropriate
conduct befitting an adult training facility.
Should a breach arise requiring disciplinaryprocedures, the Portfolio Manager will informthe student of the process that will be followedand the students right to support during theprocess. The procedure provides for verbaland written warnings but an extreme case ofinappropriate conduct can result in immediatesuspension and formal expulsion.
First Aid
Hazards
Report all observed hazards to your lecturerwithout delay. If you can safely andimmediately resolve the hazard, please do so.Seek assistance whenever making changes.
Inform your lecturer so there is no furtheroccurrence.
Security
Students are urged not to leave personalbelongings unattended. Make sure lockers aresecured at all times.
Insurance
Students, parents and guardians should be
aware that South West Regional College ofTAFE Insurance does not cover students,whether participating in classes or otherwise,for personal accidents through misadventurenor loss or damage of personal belongings,except in certain circumstances. For insurancecover please contact your personal insurer.
Smoking
For the safety and health of others smoking is
not permitted within 5 metres of any doorwayor window. Smoking is not permitted in anyCollege building or upper level walkways. Ifyou smoke outside, please ensure that yourcigarette butts are extinguished and placed ina bin.

Important Information for Students
Speeding
EvacuationBunbury Campus Only
For the safety of all users of the College thespeed within the College grounds is limited asper signage. The speed humps used to controltraffic are 10 kph. Driving over them in excessof 10 kph speeds may result in damage to yourvehicle. Drivers should particularly exercisecaution near the entrance and bus stop areasas it is used by a large number of primaryschool aged students. Parking is restricted tothe designated student car park areas anddoes not include lawns and gardens. Persons
breaching driving and parking conditionsshould expect to be penalised as per theStudent Code of Conduct
In the event of an emergency, the siren willsound continuously which indicates the needfor all persons to evacuate the buildings.
There are two designated assembly areasknown as Evacuation Area North (front of
Campus) and Evacuation area South (rear ofCampus). Your lecturer or the Director ofOperations will provide advice as to which oneof these areas you are to report to.
The continuous sounding of the siren willindicate the need to evacuate.
Students in a class are to move with theirlecturer in an orderly manner.
All other persons not in a class at the timeof an evacuation are to move to the
designated assembly area.
Any person(s) concerned for the safety ofanother should notify any College staffmember wearing a yellow, red, green or whitehard hat.

A Result Appeal procedure exists for thosestudents wishing to appeal an academic resultand undertake a re-assessment. AcademicResult Appeal Application forms are availableat all campuses.A form needs to be lodged to instigate the re-sult appeal procedure. More details aboutthese procedures can be obtained from yourlecturer or Portfolio Manager.
TAFE staff and students are expected to:

The staff of South West Regional College ofTAFE take pride in the high standard of
training they provide and invite you to work inpartnership with them to achieve the bestlearning experience for all students.
Developing an effective learningenvironment by:
Attending all lectures, workshops andlaboratory sessions
Wearing and maintaining clothing andfootwear appropriate to the workplace.
Arriving on time for all appointments andclasses, and remaining in the class for theduration of the session. If you are unable toattend a class for any reason it is yourresponsibility to advise the College withinnormal business hours (8 am to 5 pm).
Using only equipment supplied or approvedby the College/lecturer. Mobile phonesshould be turned off during classes
Avoiding cheating and plagiarism (using anauthors work without acknowledging that
author, including scanned and electronicallycopied material). Your lecturer can advisehow to correctly reference work, so that nounapproved assistance in the preparation ofany work (including assignments, tests,reports and examinations) for which you areto be assessed is given or received. Ingroup work, by contributing equally inpreparation of work for assessment
Ensuring only people enrolled in classattend that class unless prior permissionhas been obtained from the Portfolio

Achieving a healthy and safe learningenvironment that maximises the learningopportunities for all students by:
Wearing appropriate protective clothing andequipment, and securing hair, jewellery andclothing to avoid accidents
Engaging in safe and co-operativebehaviour in classrooms, laboratories,
workshops and in other parts of the Collegepremises and while on excursions or work
placement organised by the College
Making an effort to keep the campus cleanand tidy for everyone. Your contribution bydisposing of your own rubbish will greatlyassist
Keeping food and drinks out of classrooms,laboratories and workshops
Abstaining from drugs, alcohol and othersubstances that may affect co-ordination,response rate and/or judgment to the extent
that the safety and effectiveness of thelearning environment is compromised.Note: If you are required to takeprescription medicine, you should adviseyour lecturer if you are in a situation were itmay impact on your performance,particularly activities involving operation ofequipment or activities involving risk.

Using sporting equipment only in thoseareas within the College that have beenspecifically designated for sporting activities
Ensuring that everyone is treated equallyand without bullying or harassment (ie anyverbal, visual and/or physical behaviourwhich causes offence or distress to others)by:
Refraining from any activities that may beconstrued as bullying or harassment
Reporting any incidents of bullying orharassment observed in the Collegewhether caused by staff or students
Showing respect and consideration for otherstudents, staff and College visitors.
What is bullying or harassment?
A form of abuse that is repetitive, often hiddenand involves mis-use of power against an
individual or a group. It can be direct orindirect and difficult to identify. Anyone canengage in bullying or harassment and thereasons can vary for each situation.
What does it look like?
Social/relational eg ostracising, rumours,social exclusion, rejection
Physical e.g kick, punch, physical/sexualassault
Mental/psychological e.g stalking, threats,text messaging, gestures
Verbal e.g name calling, swearing,put-downs, racism, sexism, nasty notes.
Should you feel that you have been unfairlytreated or are concerned about your safetyplease raise the matter with a member of theCollege staff who will be able to direct you tothe appropriate College Support Officer.

Notes:
i) College policy is not limited to the statements inthis document. The College has more detailedpolicy statements on these and a range of otherissues in its policy manual. From time to timesuch policies and directions may be appliedwhen appropriate to a particular circumstance.Clarification of policy on any issue can beobtained by direct request to any CollegeManager.
ii) Class attendance rolls are maintained and maybe used for assessment purposes as well as fordetermining entitlement for financial support.
iii) All College staff are bound by our Staff Code ofConduct, Quality Policy and Customer ServiceCharter. Copies of these may be obtained fromany staff member upon request. If you have anycomments to make about the College or its staff,either positive or otherwise, you may do sousing a Customer Feedback form. These areavailable from all staff members and aredisplayed in administration centres and otherpublic locations at all campuses.
iv) Students who do not display appropriateconduct may be excluded by staff fromparticipating in class and may, in extreme
cases, be subject to other penalties andrestrictions as determined by the ManagingDirector including being denied access to theCollege. Offences likely to lead to suspensionand being reported to the relevant authoritiesare:
Property damage
Physical assault
Theft
Misuse of campus equipment or funds
The carrying of any form of weaponry (i.e.items which are specifically designed tocause harm to others or damage property)on College property
Serious verbal assaults or threats of violence
The unlawful possession, use or distributionof drugs on College campuses
Consumption of alcohol on any Collegecampus or at any College activity unlessspecifically authorised by College staff

Maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem ofothers
Maintain constructive relationships

7. You may not use SWRC services to create,host or transmit material, or engage inactivities that could cause offence to others.
8. All information accessible via the network should be assumed to be privateproperty.
9. You must not use SWRC services forany activities which contravene the laws ofAustralia or its states and territories, or ofthe destination country in the case of databeing transmitted abroad.
Monitoring of computer usage, including email
and Internet use, is carried out regularly. TheSWRC reserves the right to retrieve any item/file on the computer system at any time,including email, and information accessed viathe Internet.
Consequences for misuse/abuse ofcomputing resources:
Warning Loss of privilege to use computing
resources
Referral to administration for discipline Referral to authorities for legal
processing
Depending on severity, the disciplinaryprocess may include combinations ofconsequences.
Student Network User
Agreement
When you first log onto the College network,you will see a copy of the Student NetworkUser Agreement. You must accept it to bepermitted access to the network. Thismessage will subsequently disappear onceyou have accepted it.
These terms of the agreement are asfollows:
The South West Regional College of TAFE(SWRC) provides computing resources toassist students complete their studies.
The use of computing resources is aprivilege. Students are to use the resourcesin a responsible manner and respect theintegrity of computer systems, networks anddata, and the rules and regulationsgoverning their use as detailed below.
1. All use of computer resources must bedirectly related to your course/qualification of study.
2. You must not reveal your password toothers nor use another persons account.
3. Installation of any software or hard-ware, or changing theconfiguration of any equipment unlessexplicitly directed by a SWRC lecturer isprohibited.
4. You may not act in any way that may dis-rupt the use of the network or com-puting resources.
5. Seeking to gain unauthorised access toSWRC computer systems is prohib-ited.
6. It is prohibited to use SWRC services formalicious purpose.
7. The use of SWRC services forcommercial activity is prohibited.

A mix of letters and numbers Eg.mdJi5yo(my dog Jim is five years old) -Not easy for others to guess
A mix of lower case & upper case letters Include numbers and special characters
IMPORTANT:The passwords for College PCs, my filesandmy informationare synchronised. That meansif you change yourpassword for one of
these, it will change in all 3.
Your password for my emailand my coursesare separate to the other systems and eachother.
