Welcome to Newbury Hall A Message from the School

Welcome to Newbury Hall School. We are happy that you have chosen to study here and are looking

forward to getting to know you better. It is our job to support you and look after you and all the

students in the school. With your co-operation and the skill and dedication of all the staff and teachers,

we will see that you move towards your hopes and dreams.

You are young and you are at the beginning of an exciting journey. You will be surrounded by new

experiences and cultures, and every encounter is a chance to learn something new and to make your life

richer and more interesting.

Whether you want to get into a British University or whether you have other ambitions, we can help

you. Study is the most important reason you are here, but it is not the only reason. These are some of

the most important years in your life, the years that will decide what sort of young men and women you

will become. We are happy and honoured to have a part in that. Please remember that at the bottom of

every human achievement you will find two things - hard work and respect. Without these there can be

no success.

We will be here to welcome you to Newbury Hall, and will meet you in the first few days and explain to

you about the school and how it works. Throughout your stay we will be thinking about you and talking

to the other staff about you. Anytime that you need to talk please come and find us and we will try to

help.

With our very best wishes

Newbury Hall Staff

The School Curriculum & Timetables

The Curriculum

Students are offered an interesting, stimulating and challenging choice of subjects at JFC,

GCSE and A-level. The subject syllabuses are explained to students in the individual subject

inductions and teachers and tutors will monitor students’ progress to ensure a high level of

achievement.

Study Plan

Students discuss the appropriate course of study with their tutors and the Head of Education

before beginning their studies. Students are then given advice regarding their choices and

should take subjects which match their future educational route. There is a 2 week policy

regarding change of study plan. If a student is worried that their choices are not correct they

must make an appointment with their tutor to discuss their options within 2 weeks of the

course start date.

Academic Support and Guidance

Class sizes at Newbury Hall are very small, never more than 8 students are in one class so the

teacher can give every student a lot of attention. There are also several members of staff who

will be supporting you every step of the way and can help you with your studies. Every day you

will attend Tutorials and your House Tutor is available for advice and will monitor your study

targets and homework completion. You will also have regular individual meetings with your

tutors to advise you on your progress, discuss academic issues and ensure you are meeting the

requirements of your course.

Reports, Assessments and Examinations

Interim tests, weekly tests and mock examinations will be set by the teachers on a regular basis

and your progress will be monitored.

Full reports will be prepared every half term and sent to parents, agents, guardians and host

families.

Controlled Assessments (40% of some courses) will be completed during the Spring Term and

Public examinations take place in the Summer Term in the months of May and June.

English Lessons and Language Qualifications

Language lessons are an important part of a student’s timetable. These lessons are designed to

help you learn the language and style of English used in British academic studies. IELTS

preparation and IGCSE English tuition (or KET/PET) are also an important part of your

course and the qualifications you are awarded will determine your future study route. A-level

students will take two IELTS exams every year in December and June. An IELTS exam grade of

6.0 – 6.5 is needed for entry into British universities.

12

Homework

Your studies outside the classroom the classroom are an essential component of the course and

will determine your academic success. You will have regular homework set by every teacher and

you are expected to complete it on time and to a satisfactory standard. Additionally students

are expected to dedicate time to wider subject reading and their language development.

University Preparation and Careers Guidance

The UCAS and University application programme is undertaken by all A-level students and

our advisors help the students with every step of the application process. All students receive a

career advice through the tutorial programme and meetings with the Head of Education and

tutors.

House System

Newbury Hall has a House System.

Every student is assigned to one of four Houses; Einstein, Curie, Galileo and Confucius.

Each House represents a cross section of the student population with a mixture of

nationalities, ages, courses and individual talents. The system gives each student an identity

and place in the school, fosters friendships outside existing social groups and helps to develop

leadership skills and teamwork. Each House has a House Captain and Deputy House Captain.

Every term a House competition is held, with house points gained both by individual students

and by the House as a team.

A prize-giving ceremony is held at the end of the Winter, Spring and Summer terms, in which

prizes are awarded for the house with the highest number of points, and also to individual

students on a range of different skills and abilities.

The British Classroom

Classrooms in Britain can be very different from classrooms in other parts of the world.

Because of these differences, they can seem strange and they can be hard to get used to.

In British classrooms it is important to remember the following things:

The Role of Teachers

Instead of the teacher knowing everything and telling the students, the teacher will help the

student to find out for him or herself. They will ask you questions directly, and expect you to

answer them. They will often ask your opinion or feelings about the subject or an idea. They

may ask you to argue with an idea or belief. This shows them that you are thinking about and

testing the information. They will put you in pairs or groups to work and teachers will

sometimes ask you to talk out loud to the rest of the class.

The Role of Students

Above all, students are expected to ask questions. Intelligent and interested students ask

questions. Questions show that you are interested in learning about the subject, and want to

know more.

Learning by yourself

In Britain, the student is in control of his or her learning. You must decide what you need to

learn, and you must learn it by yourself. Your teacher will be there to help you, but if you do

not want to learn nobody can make you. It is up to you. If you want to succeed, you take

responsibility for your own success, and remember that nobody can do that for you.

Page 18: Student Welcome Pack - International Study Centre · 1 STUDENT WELCOME PACK CONTENTS: Pg 2 A Message from the School Pg 3 Key Staff Pg 4The School Location Pg 5 Your First Week at

18

Study Skills

1. Take responsibility

You are the only person who can learn! If you don’t understand anything, please ask …or find

the answer yourself!

2. Keep a Learning Diary

Write down important things you have learned, things you want to know and things you are

not sure of in a learning diary. Look at your Learning Diary every day to see how much you

have learned.

3. Practise

Use new language again as soon as you can, in the next lesson, and again the next day. Make

cards to learn words you don’t know. Look at the cards every day. Listen to English

conversations.

4. Organise your files Underline important things. Improve your notes. Use colour and

highlighter pens. Put your work in order. Connect similar things. Make your worksheets look

interesting and personal.

5. Revise

At the beginning of a lesson think ‘What did we do last time?’ Test your memory at the end of

the day, and again at the end of the week. Work regularly with another student. Test each

other. Make a revision plan. Store what you have learned.

6. Plan your Work and Social Time

Plan when to do your homework and reserve that time. Be strict with yourself and make sure

you have some time for yourself or with your friends.

7. Be Kind to Yourself

To work well you need to be calm and wide awake. Take a break after each hour of study. If

you are very ‘rushed’, take a moment to become calm (some calm music will help). If you are

tired, play some lively music.

8. Be Positive.

Don’t worry about mistakes - learn from them. Mistakes are steps to success.

Page 19: Student Welcome Pack - International Study Centre · 1 STUDENT WELCOME PACK CONTENTS: Pg 2 A Message from the School Pg 3 Key Staff Pg 4The School Location Pg 5 Your First Week at

19

Adjusting to British Life

Life in England will be very different from life in your own country Many students have

changes in feelings during their stay in their new country. There are three main stages of

change:

1. Honeymoon Period-You are excited by your new country

2. Culture Shock-You feel a little lonely and troubled by your new problems

3. Adjustment- You accept the changes and begin to enjoy your new life.

Please remember that these feelings are normal for everyone. However, there are things you can

do to help you adjust to the new culture.

1. Contact friends and family.

2. Talk to someone who is feeling the same.

3. Keep healthy and get enough sleep.

4. Have fun and relax.

5. Improve your English.

6. This will help you make new friends more easily.

20

Living in the Residence

The Residence offers a structured daily routine in keeping with the demands of school work

and ensures adequate free time to meet the need for relaxation. Students are cared for and

managed by the Head of Boarding and a team of dedicated House Parents who provides adult

support and advice, whenever needed, along with high levels of supervision. The Residence is

a safe and secure environment with freedom from bullying or any other form of unkindness.

Newbury Hall promotes a healthy lifestyle, with a healthy eating policy and a strict no-smoking

policy, no alcohol and no drug policy.

Weekly Residence Meetings ensure the students are involved in the running of the Residence

and provide an open forum to discuss issues and events, present ideas or to bring up any

concerns.

Students are given a comprehensive induction on arrival and a student handbook, a daily

schedule, a contract of rules, and whenever possible a buddy is assigned to a new student.

Exeats and Curfews

Any request for absence must be submitted in writing to the school management.

An exeat form is required to be completed by a student’s parent/guardian giving permission

for a day or overnight exeat. The school will only authorise the exeat if the Management Team

agrees to the terms and the student’s academic performance is meeting the required standards.

Students aged 14 and older have ‘town leave’ privileges on Friday and weekend days.

Organisation and monitoring of student curfews is the responsibility of the Head of Boarding

and all ‘town leave’ must be authorised before students depart the school site.

Students must behave sensibly and abide by the school rules during any day or evening exeat.

Curfews and exeats privileges will be changed or withdrawn if a student’s behaviour or
