OUR LIFE OF FAITH IS A RELATIONSHIP OF LOVE. We live in relationship with God, and it is an active relationship like a parent and a child, or among friends. We also live in relationship with our sisters and brothers in faith. Baptism calls us to foster and deepen our relationships of love with God and others. Think of a relationship that you can foster
this week that will enliven your faith. And visit OnMissionChurchAlive.org, sign up for e-mail updates and stay active.

JESUS AND THE COMMANDMENTS Our Lord Jesus preached baptism, repentance, and the forgiveness of sins. Folks sometimes misinterpret his preaching to mean that he doesn’t care about sin. On the contrary, Jesus’ interpretation of the commandments is astonishingly demanding and deeply interior (as well as exterior). Below are a few guidelines. For greater elaboration, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, §§2083—2557.
What to do about all this? Go to confession! —Fr. Dave
Commandment Jesus’ Interpretation
1. I am the Lord your God: You shall not have strange gods before me.
“Whose image is on the coin?” God made you in his image, so your life’s origin and purpose are in God. Thus some sins: Doubt, disbelief, heresy, apostasy, schism, despair, presumption, acedia (spiritual boredom), indifference, ingratitude, lukewarmness, superstition, idolatry, divination, magic, testing God, sacrilege, simony, agnosticism.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
“You reject God’s commandment to keep your own way.” Invoke God’s Name only for God’s purposes, and never simply to justify your own feelings or opinions, as in the abuse of God’s Name, oath-breaking, blasphemy, perjury, frivolous oaths.
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day.
“Love one another as I have loved you;” “Do this in memory of me.” Jesus’ disciples love one another and celebrate together the day of his resurrection; they do not miss Sunday Mass for frivolous reasons or do unnecessary work on Sunday.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
“Practice and observe whatever they tell you.” Jesus has his followers respect authority in family, church, or society and, when in authority, accept responsibility as a service to others. Sins: Children’s disobedience of parents, adults’ disrespect for their parents, neglect of family life, neglect of children or their education or evangelization, disrespect or disobedience of legitimate authority.
5. You shall not kill. “Anyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment.” Jesus counts as murder not only murder (direct and deliberate killing of innocent persons), but anger or harm of another—abortion, euthanasia, suicide, scandal, intemperance, kidnapping, terrorism, mutilation, sterilization, grave robbing or desecration, anger, hatred, unjust war, accumulation of weapons, involvement with irregular weapons.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
“Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery.” Jesus counts as sin any pursuit of arousal outside of marriage, including lust, masturbation, fornication, pornography, prostitution, rape, adultery, homosexual acts, false attempt at marriage, incest, concubinage (“living together”). Jesus was also strict about frivolous separation/divorce, polygamy, false dissolution of marriage. Contraception is also sin as an effort to separate the pleasure of sexual relations from the person of the spouse.
7. You shall not steal. “You cannot serve both God and Mammon.” For Jesus, people come before property. You reverse him if you engage in theft, abuse or misappropriation of others’ property, fraud, tax evasion, waste, disregard for contracts, failure to make just reparations for harm, intemperate gambling, facilitating intemperate gambling, slavery, animal abuse, promotion of unjust social systems, disregard for the poor.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“Let your yes be yes and your no be no; anything more is from the evil one.” Thus more sins: False witness, perjury, rash judgment, detraction, calumny, flattery, adulation of sin, complaisance, boasting, caricature, lying, deception, violation of the seal of the confessional, violation of professional confidence, violation of personal confidence, manipulation of mass media.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
“If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.” Not only lust, but also immodesty and the promotion of cultural licentiousness are ways of manipulating sexual desire.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.
“Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Thus greed, avarice, and envy are all sins.

Wondering about Confession? Concerned about Confession? Confused about Confession?
AFRAID of Confession?
Why not try: Why not try:
Come and learn about the significance, beauty, and transforming power of the sacrament of confession as we journey through Lent together. We'll meet on Thursdays in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Room, and enjoy FORMED's video/faith-sharing/reflection sessions to examine our need and deepen our desire for forgiveness, especially during this penitential season. No registration necessary...just show up!
Have a Prayerful Lent! Be sure to pick up your copy of the One Bread, One Body Lenten booklet in Holy Family Hall, one of the ways SEAS Parish is providing to help you have a prayerful Lenten season. Know that this book covers February and March. Know that in mid-March the April/May copy will be available for you to continue praying through Lent, as well as into the Easter Season.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A GROUP? If you are looking for an adult faith formation group to join for Lent or for longer, contact Tess, 412-276-1011 ext. 221, for details. If you have a group, either for Lent or for longer, and are able to accept new members, please let Tess know your group's information, via [email protected].
EIGHTH GRADE RETREAT TODAY Please keep our Eighth Grade Confirmation Candidates in your prayers as they attend an all-day retreat at Seton La Salle High School today. They will be joining over 700 other students from the South Hills area for prayer, reflection, Confession, Adoration, and Mass.
Lent and the New Evangelization
“The New Evangelization means that our approach to Lent must change. We must switch our focus from
personal growth to Church growth and “give up” not chocolate, but our fear of sharing the Good News of
God’s love in Jesus Christ.
For many, Lent means spiritual self-improvement through sacrifice….But Jesus’ 40 day fast in the wilderness
was not for his own sake. It was all to prepare for his ministry, a ministry that brought light to those in darkness
and healing for the afflicted.” ~ Marcellino D’Ambrosio
Let’s think about, not so much what we’re fasting from, as why we’re fasting, who we’re fasting for, what
good, what change, we hope to bring about as a result of our fasting. And let’s back up that fasting with
prayer. Rather than looking inward, let’s look outward.
How will God prepare you for your ministry during these 40 days? What is your ministry?
Pope Benedict told us: “It is not by isolation that man establishes his worth, but by placing himself in
relation with others and with God.” Like Jesus, we’re here for each other, not for our own sake. Who are
you here for? How can you be used by God to bring light and healing to them?

Join us for Gorzkie Z a l e ( P o l i s h Lamentations) at 3:00 p.m. every
Sunday in Lent. Each week it will be held at our church, with the exception of March 26, when we will join the Bishop at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Pittsburgh’s Polish Hill neighborhood.
CONFIRMATION OF CATHOLIC ADULTS Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are the three sacraments for initiation into the Catholic faith.
If you or someone you know has missed an opportunity for the Sacrament of Confirmation, please
consider attending our parish Confirmation preparation sessions.
According to Diocesan directives the preparation of adults for Confirmation takes place within the parish. We are
offering these preparation sessions on Sundays, March 19 and 26, April 2 and 9, after the 11:30 a.m. Mass (12:30
p.m.). These sessions will prepare adults for the parish Confirmation in May. Please call Dee Fitzsimmons for
more information at 412-276-1011 x 225.
LENTEN PRAYER As part of our SEAS Lenten Prayer Plan, know that you are invited to come to the Immaculate
Conception Chapel (our "Cry Room”/Day Chapel) after every Lenten Sunday Mass (this includes,
of course, the Saturday 4:00 Mass) to be prayed with by one of our special Prayer Ministers.
If you have a need on your heart, or a concern in your life, head for the Chapel after Mass and look for a Prayer
Minister, identified by a special Name Tag. They'll pray with you, for your intention, and keep your concerns
confidential. Let's have a prayerful Lent!
WE MEET AGAIN! The SEAS’ On Mission for the Church Alive
(“OMCA”) team recently met with a few
local parishes to discuss our parishioners’
feedback on the models for parish
reorganization we are reviewing.
This past week, SEAS’s OMCA team held
a focus group to discuss this. We have
scheduled two more OMCA focus group
meetings for March 7 and March 14 (both
Tuesdays) - from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the
Maximilian Kolbe Room on the 1st floor
of the Bayley Building. If you are
interested, please try to join us. We want to
hear your thoughts on the reorganization
models we have seen and other possible
models submitted for discussion.
You can review online, at
www.OnMissionChurchAlive.org.
These documents will be available at the
focus group meetings.

Christians throughout Pittsburgh are invited to take part in the National 40 Days for Life campaign. The mission of the campaign is to unite the Body of Christ in the spiritual battle to end abortion. It is held twice a year, in the fall and in the spring. This spring’s campaign began on Wednesday, March 1, and ends on Sunday, April 9. We invite all SEAS parishioners to pray and fast, particularly during this period. You are also invited to participate in prayer vigils to be held at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic at 933 Liberty Avenue downtown between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. every day during that period. You may go at any time on your own. But SEAS has committed to a specific four hour time period where our parish will be represented. That will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21. For anyone who wishes to join us, there is information and a sign up sheet in Holy Family Hall. You may sign up for one hour or up to all four hours. Also, there is a Vigil Commitment Statement of Peace that you need to sign (if you haven't already done so in past years) and place it in the receptacle next to the sign up sheet. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Vince Bellini at 412-760-0699.
COFFEE AND CATHOLICISM Thursday March 9, 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Carnegie Coffee Company. Come meet with fellow Catholics and discuss the faith openly with each other. This week's topic is Confession, with a discussion led by Jeremy Tenant. It is open to all--long time Catholics or "just interested" people of all ages--who want to learn or share more about being Catholic. Look up the group ("Coffee and Catholicism") on Facebook!
